Work Text:
Sam and Bucky were arguing again, I could hear them as soon as the elevator doors opened. You would think them enemies with how often they bickered and fought. But, this is just their love language, I suppose.
“We’ve been doing this for an hour Sam, just drop it. Dwarves are better than hobbits.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know you say that, but-.”
“No, whatever you’re going to say, just no.”
“Really, you’re not gonna let me talk now?” I could see Bucky raise his eyebrow from across the room and had to slap a hand over my mouth to stop from laughing.
“Fine, what were you going to say then? Please, enlighten me.”
Sam mumbled something I couldn’t hear but the way Bucky’s face lit up I knew it must have been good.
“Whatcha doing boys?” I slipped my arm around Bucky’s waist and leaned up to give him a kiss on the cheek. Sam immediately pointed at me and cried out,
“She’ll back me up! Y/N loves The Hobbit!”
“Why are you arguing about hobbits and dwarves?” Both their mouths shut with an audible click.
“Because sweetheart, Birdbrain there called Bucky a hobbit after he watched him shoveling his second breakfast into his face.” Tony couldn’t resist could he? Why were all the men in my life such children?
“I am absolutely staying out of this.” I tried to leave, but they just followed me griping about it, Tony’s cackles a literal soundtrack to my distress.
“I read The Hobbit man, Bilbo Baggins is a great character, but you cannot tell me hobbits are better than dwarves. Dwarves are fighters, they actually go into battle and stand up for themselves. Hobbits are just hedonistic farmers.”
“What about the sequel, huh, Lord of the Rings? I think Frodo and *SAM* make a pretty good argument for superiority of hobbits.”
Sam grabbed my arm and I turned in the common room doorway to see Bucky standing behind us his mouth opening and closing over and over again.
“Bucky? Hunni?” As I moved closer I saw his eyes follow me, but I didn’t understand what was going on his head. He wrapped his metal hand around my upper arm and swallowed thickly before looking up at Sam again.
“There’s a sequel?” His voice came out in a whisper, full of wonder and dare I say, hope?
“Yeah, man, the Lord of the Rings, it’s a trilogy.” Sam looked from Bucky to me, clearly not understanding how he’d just blown Bucky’s mind. Bucky loves science fiction and fantasy, he would have DEVOURED the sequel trilogy if he liked The Hobbit.
Wait...Lord of the Rings didn't come out until like fifteen years...OH!
“Sam, they didn’t publish Fellowship of the Rings until the 50s!”
“Really? Dang. My bad Buck.”
“No, Sam, do you know what this means?” I was so excited now. We needed to get the team together, tonight just officially became movie night. Sam looked at the huge grin on my face and the twinkle in my eyes. Then it clicked.
“If he hasn’t READ them…”
“He hasn’t SEEN them!” I started jumping up and down. “TONY!!!”
“What haven’t I seen, what’s going on? Anytime you get this excited Doll, it usually means trouble.”
“What’s got our girl so excited?” Asked Tony as he sauntered into the room, not looking up from is Starkpad.
“Movie night, call EVERYONE. Bucky didn’t know about Lord of the Rings.” The last bit was said in a conspiratory whisper.
“Oh. Hells yes. Gimli, queue it up. FRIDAY? Tell everyone to get their asses down here.”
“Did you just call her Gimli?” Sam snickered at me but I was not offended in the slightest.
“She’s stubborn, sarcastic, cranky when you don’t feed her, and really fast over short distances. How is she not Gimli?”
“Aw, I knew you loved me Tony! That’s the second greatest compliment I’ve ever received!”
Sam sighed, taking a good long look at me before turning and heading over to the sofa.
“Who’s Gimli?” My poor boyfriend was so confused.
“Gimli is a dwarf from Lord of the Rings…”
Bucky grinned down at me then smirked at Sam.
“So I’m right dwarves ARE better than hobbits.”
