Second Opinion

Summary:

The boys roll in after Reader's long day at work. What originally seems like an honest need for lore info turns out to be an effort for Dean to be a matchmaker.

Work Text:

It had been one hell of a long day. Pulling my hair out of the the bun it had been in all day I kick the heels off that had been slowly torturing my feet and start my nightly tidying of the front lobby. I begin with straightening and restocking flyers for the different types of burial options that we offer then I move on to cleaning up leftover treats I had made for my clients. As I swept crumbs off the table I stare longly at a broken piece of sugar cookie in a tin when I hear the front door open.

Without looking up I say in my best director voice, “ I’m so sorry but we are closed for the night if you would call in the morning I would be more tha—,” Before I could finish my spiel I was interrupted by an all to familiar voice.

“Hey there Killer.” Dean Winchester said grinning at me from the door way.

Looking up quickly a smile starts to spread across my face before I remember what a visit from the Winchester brothers often means. Catching my smile and replacing it with a wary look I cross my arms and raise my eyebrows,” What’s trying to kill the poor innocents of the world now?”

Just then Sam stepped around is brother who was still standing in the doorway. Sighing with an exasperated look at Dean, he spoke quickly “ Don’t worry Y/N its nothing that bad. Just a small job. I told Dean we should have called before dropping in on you.”

Seeing Sam was a mix of pleasure and pain. I hadn’t seen him or Dean in more than three months when I had called them on what I thought might be a job. Sam and I shared a very intense moment that we were supposed to discuss after the job was over; However, that discussion never came. The job ended up being a bust (just some kids pranking the new funeral director) and before we could talk about our incident Sam and Dean had gotten a call from Bobby Singer. He had found the “Colt”.

With that one word I knew I wasn’t going to get my talk anytime soon. I just wish he had at least called.

“Oh you should have called? I wasn’t sure you knew how to do the Sam.” I said rather bitterly.

Dean snickered from behind the now sheepish Sam.

As Sam opens his mouth to reply I cut him off “ Look it is really good to see you guys but it has been a super long day so if you could tell me what you came for that would be great.”

“ You better be carful Sammy. Killer here isn’t pulling any punches tonight.” Dean said with way to much amusement in his voice. When I cut my eyes at him with a warning look he sobered slightly and continued“ We’re researching a case a couple towns over and we thought we would stop in and get your opinion.”

“My opinion? I’m barely even a hunter and I’ve mostly dealt with spirits.”, I said incredulously.

“We trust your opinion” Dean shrugged with a matter of fact tone

Sam still quite from my rebukes nods his head.

“ alright lay it on me” I sighed feeling my long day deep in my bones. “ But first lets at least have a seat I am dog tired and my feet are killing me”

With that I lead them to the back where my office was located.  I sat in my desk chair offering the two chairs that my clients would sit in to the boys. Sam accepted stretching his long legs out in front of him. Dean stayed standing gripping the back of the chair.

Now comfortably seated I looked expectantly at Dean until he started laying the case details out.

“ Is that it?” I asked. Was he being serious or pulling my leg. I looked over at Sam to see if he was in on the joke. Sam looked rather confused himself, but as he made eye contact with his brother he must have seen something that transformed his confusion into frustration.

“ Dean are you kidding me? Please tell me you did not spend gas money on coming out here for this?” I accused as Dean did his best to give me an innocent and questioning look. It did not suit him.

“ So your case is that there is something dropping bodies and taking their hearts?” You stated bluntly.

“Yes that is exactly what I’m saying.” he affirmed.

“ I swear to god if you do not get out of my office in the next thirty second I am going to beat your ass. You know damn good and well that’s a Werewolf and yesterday was the full moon.” I growled out in Dean’s direction. Chuckling to himself Dean hurriedly leaves the room. “ This isn’t funny Dean!” I shouted at his retreating form.

‘It is to me! Think of it as a new hunter pop quiz! Plus it was the only way I could think to get Sammy here to talk to you.” He yelled over his shoulder as he walked out of the room.

Sighing with amusement I shift my attention to the remaining Winchester brother who had stayed quite threw the exchange between his brother and I. Sighing and leaning back in my chair I ask, “ Please tell me that case wasn’t stumping you Mr. Wizard?”

Scratching the back of his neck and looking at the floor he mumbled, “ Dean said the bodies were missing their heart, lungs, and liver. I thought he had legitimate questions for you.” once he was finished speaking Sam continued sitting in my office fiddling with his fingers.

“Can we talk about why you never called?” I asked gently seeming to sense that he was close to fleeing.

We sat in silence for another minute. Me waiting for his reply and him formulating a response.

So quietly I almost couldn’t hear him he began to speak,” Before I went back on the road with my brother I had a fiancé. Her name was Jess.” pausing for a moment to take a deep breath he continued, “She died. Because of me and what I do she died. I never want that to happen to someone else I care about”

We sat together in that sad silence letting that information sink in.

“ Did you kill her?” I blurted out before I could think it through.

Startled he looks up and makes eye contact with me for the first time since arriving out of the blue.

“ What?! No! Of course not.” he choked out.

“Well then you are not responsible for her death. We can’t control forces and actions that aren’t our own.”

He nodded. Mulling over my words.

“ Did she know what you and your family does?” I questioned gently

“ No I never told her. I wanted my time at college not to be touched by the war zone that was my childhood.”

“ I know you are afraid that the same thing could happen to another person you care about but you can’t be so afraid of people getting hurt that you keep yourself from being happy.” I kindly soothed. “ I cant promise you that bad things wont happen but I can promise that I can do my best to avoid them.”

Now smiling at the gentle giant that is Sam Winchester I add, “ Plus you forget an important fact about me.”

“ What is that?” he asked curiosity burning in his eyes.

“ I’m a Texas girl we’re always strapped. We take ‘Don’t mess with Texas’ very seriously around these parts” I said with my best Texas drawl. Smiling I lean forward in my chair and pull my holstered gun out from the back of my dress slacks.

Throwing his head back Sam let out a laugh that was like music to my ears.

“ I should worn Dean for the next time he decided to antagonize you” he chuckled out.

“ I think we should keep it our little secret. Don’t need anymore reasons for him to call me Killer.” I wink giving him a devilish smile to drive the point home.

Smilling softly at me Sam nods.

“Sammy! This is the part where you ask the girl on a date!” Dean yells from down the hallway.

Sam’s cheeks flame red and he runs his hand through his hair at his big brothers antics.

“Well Sammy? I think he’s right. Its the least you could do.” I shrug leaning back and putting my feet on my desk smirking with delight at his embarrassment.

Groaning at his brother Sam looks at me again smiling softly with his still pink cheeks and asked loud enough for Dean to hear,” Are you free next Full Moon to give me unnecessary advise?”

Grinning in satisfaction I reply, “ You know what I just might be. ”
