Chapter Text
My name is Kim Taehyung, eighteen years old, and I am currently living with my brother’s best friend. I have to admit, living in a luxurious place like this has its perks. I have a room to myself, I now live closer to my university, and I can pretty much do whatever I want as long as I’m not disrupting my current landlord. The cons? Well, there’s the fact that my landlord is a weirdo that seems like he’s never had human interaction in his entire life.
That and the fact that he enforces the ‘We have to eat meals together’ rule because my brother said that I wouldn’t eat properly if I didn't have anyone to supervise me. Even though I’m eighteen I still get treated as a child. I have lived here for a total of two months and you’d think I’d get comfortable at this point but that’s beyond the truth. But it’s not all bad. No, there’s good things about my landlord too. But in order to see them, I had to dig deep and deep I did dig.
I made a decision to get to know my landlord even if it cost me. It was hard but I don't ever regret my decision. Why? Because I wouldn’t have truly met the person he really is and that is something I would’ve regretted my entire life.
: HOW IT BEGAN :
Taehyung stretched his back, yawning loudly before opening his eyes. He looked around, immediately locking his eyes on his clock. ‘Seven thirty, time to get up’ He thought before he did just that. With a grunt, Taehyung stood up and walked into the bathroom, brushing his teeth quickly before he put his clothes on, semi styling his hair with his fingers before he left the room, book bag under his right arm. He walked down the stairs, into the luxurious living room. There was a fireplace in the far wall, a television hung on top of it. The windows reached from the ceiling to the ground, giving a beautiful view of the city before him.
Taehyung placed his book bag on the couch, leaving it there for later before he went into the kitchen, pulling out supplies to cook breakfast. With a glance at the clock, Taehyung could see that it was almost eight. ‘Fifteen minutes left’ Taehyung said worriedly. He decided to make a quick breakfast, ending up making eggs and toast. He spread a bit of butter and jam on the bread, placing it on both plates that contained the scrambled eggs. He then lifted them, taking them to the dining room table.
He was glad that he was done with breakfast before the handle of the clock hit eight. Taehyung had a minute left, giving him enough time to grab two cups of orange juice. As soon as he placed the cups on the table, he heard a door open, knowing full well who that was. Taehyung sat down, waiting for his infamous landlord to sit down adjacent to him. Taehyung stared at him, amazed to see how his landlord was always put together even when he had barely woken up. He was wearing a button up shirt and tie, slacks tightly fitted on his lower body.
“Morning.” His landlord said, a yawn escaping his mouth. “Good morning.” Taehyung replied, eyes glancing up at him every few times. When his landlord sat down, he immediately reached for his fork. He grabbed a bit of egg, humming as soon as he took a bite out of them. Taehyung knew he didn't cook very well but for some reason, this man never said anything nor did he ever complain. His landlord’s name is Jeon Jungkook. He’s eight years older than Taehyung and according to his research, he was a prodigy child.
He inherited his father’s company at a young age when his father unfortunately died because of a heart attack. Taehyung didn't need to be told that Jungkook worked hard to move the company forward. At least, that’s what he suspects by the dark bags under his landlord’s eyes. In the total of two months that Taehyung has been here, he of course had to notice how handsome his landlord was but he made sure not to focus on that too much. Why? Because this was not only his landlord but his brother’s best friend. He was also very weird.
“Jam.” Taehyung hummed in question, immediately brought back to reality when he heard Jungkook speak. “Jam, you put jam on the toast.” Taehyung looked down at Jungkook’s toast, watching him take a bite. He chewed for a while, letting out a soft hum when he swallowed. “I like it.” “Ah” Taehyung replied with furrowed eyebrows. He watched Jungkook continue eating, not saying another word. That’s what Taehyung was talking about, his landlord was weird.
He would make the simplest of comments sound strange. He would also comment on things that Taehyung honestly thought that they didn't need to be spoken aloud. “Thank you for the meal.” Jungkook said after eating. He stood up, taking his plate towards the automatic dishwasher. Taehyung soon finished his meal and did the same, turning it on before he made his way towards his book bag. “I’ll take you to school.” “Oh. . . that’s not necessary. It’s a short walk there so-” Taehyung closed his mouth when Jungkook turned to look at him. He had a blank face but it wasn’t intimidating, far from that. He actually looked. . . confused?
“Uhm, I mean, okay. Thank you.” Taehyung replied instead, bowing slightly. His landlord never offered him rides so it was a little strange though at this point, Taehyung should pretty much expect anything from him. He saw Jungkook walk up to his room, he guessed to get his blazer and briefcase. Taehyung sighed softly, not knowing if it was a good thing or not that he couldn’t say no to his landlord. All he needed was a look from him and Taehyung immediately agreed to what he wanted. Though, Taehyung couldn’t really say no to everything. This man is giving him a place to live for free. Well. . . not entirely for free since Taehyung does cook and clean.
It was no later than two minutes when Jungkook came back, looking smarter than ever now that he had his blazer on. “Let’s go.” Taehyung nodded, grabbing his book bag before he followed Jungkook down to the garage of his luxury apartment. They entered his car, a sleek black Lamborghini. This isn’t the first time Taehyung is in this car but he’s still very uncomfortable in it. He feels. . . out of place. Taehyung never grew up with things like this. He was always the kind of guy that would settle with public transportation to get to places. He’s the kind of guy that can eat instant ramen noodles for dinner every other day. . . okay, every day but that’s besides the point.
Taehyung nervously sat on the passenger seat, hands on his lap as he looked out of the window. They were close to the school, only one more street to go. A few more minutes of tortured silence to finally get to school. Taehyung sighed with relief when Jungkook parked the car, watching Taehyung exit. He turned to him, bowing at Jungkook as a form of thanks. “Taehyung.” Jungkook said, stopping Taehyung from leaving. “Yes?” “I leave earlier from work today, would you like me to pick you up?”
‘Oh no, please god no.’ “Uhm. . . sure. If you’re not busy.” Taehyung replied. Jungkook gave him a nod, letting Taehyung know that he’ll be here to pick him up. After another bow, Jungkook drove away. Once he was out of sight, Taehyung felt the breath in his lungs come back to him. “I see you still have issues with your landlord.” Taehyung turned around, eyes widening when he saw his best friend standing next to him. “Bogum! I didn't hear you come.” Bogum chuckled, shaking his head softly. “It’s alright, I’m more interested in your affair.
What’s up with him? No progress?” Taehyung pouted, making Bogum laugh harder. “It’s not funny, I genuinely tried talking to him to become his friend but he’s so. . . reserved. I don't know what to do. It feels awkward to be around him. I want to get this dumb barrier out of the way but how?” Bogum hummed as he placed an arm around Taehyung’s shoulder, slightly nudging him to start walking or he’ll be late for class again.
“How about, you learn more about him and talk from what you find.” “I already did, I searched up his wiki and everything. But when it came down to it, I was too nervous to speak. I don't know, I kind of feel intimidated? It's not that I'm afraid of him, it’s just-” “How he behaves?” Taehyung nodded, sighing loudly. Bogum chuckled before he ruffled Taehyung's hair. “Maybe you should snoop around? Find something that he likes in his room and then talk about it.” “What?! I can’t do that! He’s my landlord, I can’t just enter his room without permission.” Taehyung looked forward, noticing that they were entering class. Luckily the teacher wasn’t there yet.
“Okay, how about you ask your brother? He should know something, right?” Taehyung hummed, lips pushed out into a pout. “I guess I could do that. I hope I’m not disturbing him though.” “He’s overseas isn’t he?” Bogum asked, earning a nod from Taehyung. “In Rome for work, don't know when he’ll be back though.” Taehyung was about to open his mouth but immediately shut it when he saw the teacher enter. Almost like a switch was hit, everyone in the class sat straighter, all ready to learn. “Good morning class, let’s begin from where we left off yesterday.”
It was three in the afternoon when class was finally over. Bogum was sitting with him, waiting for his landlord to appear. Bogum was telling jokes, making Taehyung laugh, and throwing his head back at a particular one. At that exact moment, a black Lamborghini pulled over. Taehyung looked over, moving to stand and walk over but he definitely didn't expect Jungkook to come out of the car. He walked over to the passenger seat, opening the door for him. Taehyung felt embarrassed, especially when he saw Bogum wiggle his eyebrows at him. Taehyung quickly swatted his arm hard, making Bogum wince. He let out a yelp of surprise.
Taehyung then walked over, entering the car before Jungkook closed the door. It was no less than five seconds when Jungkook entered the car, starting it up to head home. Once again, it was quiet but Taehyung was determined to break the silence. Too bad his landlord beat him to it. “How was your classes?” Taehyung stood in shock, his landlord started the conversation? That was something new. Taehyung recovered from his shock and tried to answer nonchalantly. “It was good, a little tiring.” “Tiring?”
‘Is this really happening? Am I really having a normal conversation with the infamous non sociable Jeon Jungkook? “Y-Yeah, uhm, it’s cause of exams and what not. It’s okay though, I have my friend to study with.” Jungkook hummed, taking in the information before he replied. “If you’d like, you can bring your friend over to study. Assuming you’ll do just that.” Taehyung widened his eyes. Not only was that convenient, it was also very helpful since Bogum didn't quite live close by.
“Yeah, that sounds great actually! Thank you.” “It’s the least I can do since you’re alone most of the time after school.” Taehyung actually felt touched at Jungkook’s words. Not once in the entire two months he’s been living with him did Jungkook ever show any sign that he cares about him. Taehyung smiled softly, lowering his head slightly so that he wouldn't embarrass himself. “Thank you so much Mr. Jeon, I really appreciate it.”
“Jungkook” “Huh?” Taehyung replied quickly “Call me Jungkook, I am only seven years older than you. Unless you prefer to call me hyung.” “Oh. . .okay, J-Jungkook. . . sir?.” Taehyung stuttered. He wasn’t used to calling his landlord by his first name and he’s always referred to him as Mr. Jeon. Taehyung had to add the sir, it felt wrong if he didn't. He wondered what brought Jungkook to tell him to call him by name. He didn't have much to think about it since he felt Jungkook park the car, getting out soon after. Taehyung got out and followed Jungkook to the elevator, slowly rocking on his boot heels when the elevator seemed to take it’s sweet time.
The ‘ding’ sound was a relief for Taehyung. He let Jungkook get out of the elevator first before he followed suit. “I’ll cook dinner and let you know when it’s done.” Jungkook nodded, instantly going up stairs. Taehyung watched him leave before he walked over to his room, placing his book bag on his bed before changing out of his clothes. Since he wasn’t going anywhere anymore, he decided to put his pajamas on.
After he was refreshed and cozy, he walked back downstairs, starting up with dinner. The first thing he did was put the rice maker, hoping it’ll be done as soon as he finishes cooking the rest. Taking a packet of tofu out of the fridge, he placed it on the cutting board, reaching in for vegetables as well. He cut them first before slicing the tofu into small sizes. Taehyung has slowly learned how to cook with tofu since it seemed like Jungkook liked it best instead of pork.
Beef was still okay but Jungkook seemed to almost lick his plate completely whenever Taehyung cooked with tofu so that’s what he decided to cook. Marinated tofu with vegetables as a side dish and some rice. Simple yet still satisfying. It didn't take long for the vegetables to cook. He left them on low fire whilst he took care of the tofu, feeling relieved that the rice cooker finished cooking the minute he was done with the tofu.
He placed each individual item on serving plates before bringing them to the dining room table. He then unplugged the rice cooker and carefully brought it onto the table so that they could serve themselves more rice if they so pleased. Taehyung grabbed a large canteen of water to the table, grabbing two glass cups on the way. The table was pretty much set and all that was left was to fetch Jungkook from his study. “Alright, it’s showtime.”
Taehyung walked towards Jungkook’s study, knocking softly. He opened it after he heard his voice, head immediately looking down when he saw Jungkook on his desk chair, his laptop in front of him. “Dinner’s ready.” Jungkook nodded, typing a bit more before he closed his laptop. Taehyung took that as his cue to get going. He walked down, sitting down on his designated chair. He watched Jungkook sit adjacent to him, immediately grabbing his chopsticks.
“Thank you for the food.” He said before he dug in. Taehyung took a moment to watch Jungkook’s features, hoping that his food didn't taste bad. But when he saw Jungkook raise his eyebrows, reaching for more tofu, he knew it tasted good. He smiled softly to himself, reaching in to take some food for himself. No words were exchanged but somehow, Taehyung felt okay about it.
He still thought his landlord was weird but at least he knows that he does have feelings since he did practically tell Taehyung that he was concerned for his studies and that counts, right? Taehyung would like to think so.
The day had finally come, Taehyung and his best friend Bogum were going to have a study session in the house and although he had permission, he still felt like it wasn’t his place to have people over. Bogum whistled loudly, eyes immediately looking all over the living room when he stepped in. Truth be told, the apartment was pretty impressive so he totally understood Bogum’s reaction. The living room was spacious, kitchen just as impressive. The dining room was slightly smaller but still very nice.
“Wow, this is impressive. Man, how much I wish I had a sugar daddy.” “He is not my sugar daddy! He’s my landlord. Besides, we barely talk and the only time I actually see him is breakfast and dinner. After that, I hardly see him.” Taehyung replied as he led Bogum up to his room. Jungkook wasn’t home but Taehyung still felt a bit insecure about having Bogum, his shameless friend, into a home he didn't own or pay for that matter. He was still working on that, getting a part time job that is.
“Alright, let’s get to work.” Bogum luckily agreed and soon, the two started to study. It was after thirty minutes of working that Bogum let out a loud groan. “I’m tired!! I swear, after college, I don't want to see another math equation ever again.” Taehyung chuckled, closing his text book after he placed a marker in, making sure he didn't lose his place. “Don't worry, once we graduate, we’re not going to see any more equations again. Just simple math, you okay with that toots?” “I’d take simple addition than this nonsense.” Bogum replied, laying down on the carpeted ground with a yawn.
“Let’s take a break. Do you want a snack or something to drink?” Bogum sighed, nodding his head as he agreed to some water and whatever snacks Taehyung decided to bring up. Taehyung did just that. He was walking back with a couple of chip bags and two water bottles back to his room when he found Bogum on his laptop. “Why’re you invading my privacy?” Taehyung asked, an eyebrow raised, though there were no venom in his words. Bogum smirked, giving Taehyung a snark look. “It’s not like your life is any more interesting than mine.”
Taehyung placed his hand on his chest, acting out a hurt expression. “Ouch, I don't think we can be friends anymore after that.” “Ha ha, drama queen.” Bogum replied, rolling his eyes slightly. “It’s not your life I’m interested in, it’s your lovely landlord’s.” Taehyung’s eyebrows shot up. “What?” He walked next to Bogum, sitting next to him on the bed. “There’s loads of info in here. His family history and achievements. Says here that he also had a few scandals.” Taehyung let out a sigh, crossing his arms in front of him.
“You’re in a blog, Bog. For all we know, that can all be fake news. I didn't bother reading that garbage cause that’s all this is, garbage news.” “Oh? So it doesn’t interest you?” “Nope” Taehyung responded, emphasizing the P. “So I guess you’re not interested in this dating scandal he had. Oh and look, the date’s recent.” Taehyung widened his eyes, immediately looking back at the laptop screen. “Dating scandal? With who?” Bogum laughed but read the article for Taehyung to hear it. “Says that there were rumors of him and some actress he worked with were dating. There’s even some pictures here of them meeting at a restaurant.”
Bogum pulled the pictures up, and sure enough, Taehyung saw Jungkook and some woman sitting on a table in a fancy restaurant. “Actress? Hmm, and what if they’re just friends?” Bogum hummed, pushing on another picture next to that one. “I’m not so sure if they’re friends.” The next picture was of the same woman standing next to Jungkook in what looked like a ceremony. Her hand was on top of his shoulder. They were standing offly close but Jungkook wasn’t looking at her or anyone for that matter. It just seems a bit convincing because the actress is staring at him with what looked like a loving look in her eyes.
“I don't know, I’m not convinced.” Taehyung said, moving away from the laptop. His back was now leaning on the headboard, eyes still watching Bogum look through the blog. “Well, if they’re not dating they definitely fucked.” “Bogum!” Taehyung yelled, amazed by his brashness. “I mean come on, this lady looks like she’s ready to get on her knees and-” “Shh!!” Taehyung yelled when he heard the sound of a door opening and closing. “He’s home.” He said with wide eyes. Bogum’s eyes widened before he had a playful look, a smirk appearing on his face.
“Bogum. . . what’re you-?” Taehyung didn't have a chance to ask before Bogum shot up and ran to the door. “Bogum!” Taehyung whisper yelled, also standing to chase him but his legs got tangled with the sheets which made him tumble to the ground. He yelped slightly but ignored it to continue following Bogum. He stopped when he saw Jungkook, in the process of taking off his suit tie. He was staring at Bogum and Taehyung with confusion. “Hi, it’s a pleasure to officially meet you. I’m Park Bogum, Taehyung’s best-est friend.” Taehyung tsked as he lightly pushed him.
“Likewise, I'm Jeon Jungkook.” Jungkook offered a short bow which Bogum immediately returned it. “I hope there are no problems with me studying with Taehyung.” “Of course not, I allowed him to do so. He is living here for a while, he can bring whoever he wants.” Bogum smiled the fakest wide smile Taehyung has ever seen on him. “You’re such a gentleman, thank you Mr. Jeon.” Jungkook nodded before he made his way towards his study. Taehyung and Bogum stayed in their position, both staring as he left. They only moved when Jungkook closed the door behind him.
“What the hell was that?!” Taehyung whisper yelled. “I just wanted to properly meet him. Is that so bad?” “Uh yes, that’s obviously bad!” Bogum chuckled, shaking his head as he walked back towards Taehyung’s room. “Hey, I’m just trying to help you figure out why he’s so weird. Oh! Why don't you go look through his stuff in his study. I mean, when he’s not here that is.” “I already said that I wasn’t going to do that.” Taehyung replied, watching as Bogum began to pack his things.
One look at the clock told Taehyung that it was almost five thirty. “You won’t be able to get close to him at this point then. You’ll be stuck in an endless loop of awkwardness until you find a new place to stay.” Taehyung glared at Bogum as he stood up, placing his backpack on his shoulder. He walked towards Taehyung, patting his shoulder twice. The pats were so unexpectedly hard that it made Taehyung wince. “Good luck with Mr. Landlord.” Bogum walked out of the room, Taehyung following behind him. “See ya later best friend.” He said sarcastically “Yeah, okay.” Taehyung responded, watching as Bogum dramatically blew a kiss at him.
Taehyung kicked the air, kicking his kiss away. Bogum pulled his tongue out before he pushed the button for the elevator. “Don’t miss me!” “I won’t, trust me.” Taehyung replied, laughing when Bogum waved as the doors to the elevator closed. Taehyung closed the door, making his way towards his room to clean up. His sheets were on the ground still from him tangling himself on them. He picked them up, closing his laptop and placing it on the desk on the other side of his room. He then decided it was best to get started on dinner. He opened the fridge door, eyes looking around as he hummed.
“I gotta go to the store soon.” “Are we running out?” Taehyung yelped, instantly turning around. His eyes were wide when they locked onto Jungkook’s. “Sorry if I scared you.” Taehyung shook his head, smiling awkwardly. He didn't realize that in his startled state, he grabbed a carrot, aiming it towards Jungkook in a defensive way. “Oh, It’s okay. I just didn't hear you come down.” Taehyung placed the carrot back inside, hands feeling sweaty when he didn't hear Jungkook move. ‘He’s still looking at me.’ Taehyung thought after a while.
He proved himself right when he turned back, finding Jungkook looking at the refrigerator. “If there’s nothing, we can order in. I can order someone to get groceries tomorrow morning.” Taehyung was surprised to hear that. Come to think of it, Taehyung has always found the fridge full and never really questioned it. ‘Has. . . has he been sending people to buy groceries this whole time?’ Taehyung felt stupid because he never really questioned it. He always thought that Jungkook would be the one to go buy them.
He was brought back to reality when Jungkook called out to him, telling him to sit on the couch. Taehyung sat on the couch adjacent to him, eyes staring at Jungkook as he looked through his phone. “What would you like to eat?” He asked, eyes moving to look up at Taehyung when he didn't answer. “Uhm, I can eat anything. You know, as long as it’s edible.” Taehyung felt the tips of his lips raise when Jungkook let out a soft airy laugh. It wasn’t much nor did he really smile but that was the first time Taehyung had ever seen Jungkook even remotely laugh or at least showed any signs of laughing.
“Is Thai food okay then?” Taehyung nodded, letting Jungkook choose the food for tonight's meal. Taehyung hates to say it but as they waited for the food to arrive, he was watching Jungkook move around the house. It was weird to pay close attention to someone as they did their own thing. First, Jungkook was reading the newspaper before he set it aside and went to turn on the fireplace. He then walked towards the kitchen, grabbing a cup of ice water before he walked back to the living room, taking a sip of water before placing the cup on the coffee table over a marble coaster.
Taehyung was pretending to be on his phone as he watched Jungkook look at his, making a pouty face that Taehyung thinks Jungkook wasn’t aware he was doing. After a while, Jungkook stood up when his phone rang. Taehyung thought it was the delivery but when Jungkook’s expression turned serious, he knew that it was probably from his job. Taehyung hummed as he heard Jungkook walk back upstairs to his study. He slouched on the couch, only now realizing how creepy it was for him to watch Jungkook’s every move. “Maybe I’m the weird one.” He said, sighing softly as he leaned his head back.
He closed his eyes for a few seconds, trying to get his thoughts in check. He wanted to get to know his landlord simply because he hated the constant awkwardness around them. He didn't know if it was because he was seven years younger than Jungkook that he was acting this way or because he’s never actually had much interaction. ‘But he’s my brother’s friend.’ Taehyung thought in his head. ‘I have to make an effort in getting to know him.’ His older brother was another social butterfly, like himself. If they were able to become best friends, maybe he can too.
But how? How was he going to get Jungkook to open up to him? ‘I should ask my brother.’ He thought as he closed his eyes, leaving them closed for a bit before opening them again. He nodded his head, deciding that he’ll do just that. He’s going to try to bring Jungkook out of his shell. If his brother was able to do it, so can he. If Jungkook wasn’t going to talk about himself, there was only one thing Taehyung could actually do. “I’m going to regret this.” Taehyung said to himself when he remembered what Bogum told him.
‘Look into his study when he’s not home’ Taehyung let out a sigh, bottom lip in between his teeth. Yeah, that’s one way to find out about him but he didn't know if it was the right way to do it. Taehyung looked towards the door when he heard a short buzz, telling him that someone was ringing the door downstairs. He stood up and walked towards the monitor “Hello?” He asked as he pushed a button. “Delivery for Mr. Jeon!” The person on the other side said. “Ah, come up.” Taehyung pushed another button, allowing the man to enter the elevator and come up to their door. It was no later than a minute that there was a knock at the door.
Taehyung opened it, grabbing the bags from the man. “It’s paid already.” The man said when he saw Taehyung reach in his pocket. “Oh but what about the tip?” The man chuckled as he shook his head. “I can’t take anymore, it’ll seem like I robbed someone on my way here. It’s okay sir, have a nice day, Mr. Jeon.” Taehyung raised his eyebrows, opening his mouth to correct the man but before he was able to, he had already walked into the elevator, bowing at him from there. Taehyung shrugged his shoulders, closing the door behind him before he brought the food to the dining room.
He laid it out nicely and as soon as he was done, Jungkook came back down. He looked irritated, eyebrows furrowed, a frown on his face. Taehyung wouldn’t usually talk to him when he was like this. He didn't know if it was wise to talk to Jungkook when he was mad or even remotely annoyed, simply because he didn't know how he would react but his mind brought him back to his task. He wanted him to open up, might as well lend him his ear to listen. “Is. . . everything okay?” Taehyung asked carefully. He watched Jungkook glance at him before he looked back down to his food, grabbing a napkin to begin eating.
‘Should I have not asked anything?’ Taehyung pouted softly but immediately neutralized his expression when Jungkook spoke. “There was something wrong with finances but it’s fine.” “By your expression, it doesn’t seem alright.” Taehyung should've really kept his mouth shut after that. It sounded like Taehyung was reproaching him when it was not his intention. Luckily, it didn't seem like Jungkook took it that way. “. . .I’m sorry” Taehyung’s eyes widened. “Oh, no! You shouldn’t apologize! I’m the one who should apologize. It wasn’t my place to ask or anything. You don't even have to tell me if you don't want to.”
Taehyung had to look away when he saw Jungkook’s intense stare. That’s something Taehyung couldn’t do, he couldn’t look at Jungkook when he was looking at him. He felt. . . vulnerable. Jungkook’s stare was just too potent. “It’s okay, I’m alright with you asking. And I was apologizing because I shouldn’t bring work matters here.” Taehyung was surprised by his answer. When he saw Jungkook begin to eat, he began eating too, thinking it was best to just enjoy the silence. It was hard enough talking to Jungkook and sometimes, silence is good. It might even help Jungkook relax from thinking about work.
It was two days after that Taehyung found himself alone in the apartment. It was three o’clock in the afternoon and he was bored out of his mind. He didn't have any classes that day and he also didn't have anything to do in the apartment. Everything was clean and it was too early for him to make dinner since Jungkook usually got home from around five to six. Taehyung was lazing about, looking around his social media as a form of entertainment when he suddenly got an email. He frowned, not recognizing who it was from. He clicked and waited for it to load, only to curse at his idiot friend, Bogum, when he saw that it was a newsletter from the blog he was reading from last time.
“He must’ve subscribed me when I wasn’t looking.” He said, trying to click away. But before he was able to close the tab, the name ‘Jeon Jungkook’ was written in all caps, at the center of the page. “Another scandal” He said, reading the bottom portion. It said something about his company and another having issues about fraud. “Is this what Jungkook was talking about?” Taehyung asked as he thought about the time Jungkook said there was a problem about finance in his company. Not actually interested in stuff like that, Taehyung went ahead and closed his laptop. With another sigh, he stood up and walked out to the hallway.
He had nothing to do, nothing interesting to read or see. His eyes automatically went to both Jungkook’s study and room. ‘Snoop through his stuff’ Bogum’s words kept repeating in his head. He bit his bottom lip as he walked to the study’s door. If there was a place he was going to snoop, it’ll be in the study. There was no way he was going into Jungkook’s room. Not only was that weird, it was a violation of privacy. Not that snooping into the study wasn't, but you get the point. Jungkook also didn't say not to go in the study, nor did he say that he wasn’t allowed to go anywhere.
With that mindset, he opened the study door, head peeking in before he entered. He was, to say the very least, nervous. He’s come in here a couple times but only to call him to dinner. He’s never properly looked around so his eyes immediately scanned the room. They first landed on the desk where papers and folders were neatly stacked on top of a closed laptop. On the other side of the room was a window and a large bookcase, two to be exact. His eyes scanned each and every one of them, eyebrows furrowed when he noticed that they were all under the same author.
And what surprised him even more was that it was the same author that inspired Taehyung into literature. It’s because of this author that he was so interested in psychology. This author has written so many books, all from different subjects from fiction to nonfiction. Taehyung was fascinated by this author’s creativity. He was amazed that Jungkook had each and every book. This collection was extraordinary, it was Taehyung's dream come true. “Guess I’m not the only fan.” Of course this author had more fans out there since his books sold out almost instantly but Taehyung had never really met one.
He grabbed a book, opening it on a random page. He smiled, reminiscing when he first discovered the author. ‘JJ’ was the name of the author. He remained anonymous, which Taehyung was a little sad about. He wanted to put a face to the person he aspired to be. Taehyung sat on the ground, not realizing that he began reading. It was only after he finished the hefty book that he noticed the pain on his back from slouching for such a long time. He stretched, groaning when he cracked his back.
He stood up, putting the book back in its place. “I wonder how he was able to get all of these.” “They were given to me.” Taehyung shrieked, back moving towards the bookcase when he heard another voice. “Mr. J-Jeon!” He yelled, surprised to see him there. He quickly glanced towards the clock on the wall and saw that it was already six. ‘I spent three hours reading!?’ Taehyung looked back towards Jungkook when he saw him place his briefcase on top of the desk. “Sorry. . I-I didn't mean to come in here without permission” Jungkook frowned, eyebrows furrowing.
“You don't need my permission to come here. And please, call me Jungkook.” Jungkook glanced at the bookcase, eyes moving back to Taehyung “If you want, you can come and read.” Taehyung nodded his head, thanking him. He waited when he noticed that Jungkook was a bit hesitant at saying something. “Do you. . . like those books?” Taehyung looked back at the stack of books, nodding his head when he looked back at Jungkook. “Yeah, this author. . . he helped me a lot when I was younger. He’s also the one that made me like literature. Because of his books, I always wanted to write my own book. It’s stupid, I know.”
Taehyung looked down with embarrassment, he’s never really opened up about his love for this author. He was also kind of shy to admit it but when he was younger, still in high school, he had a minor crush on this anonymous author. “It’s not stupid. I think it’s amazing when people find others that inspire them.” Taehyung looked back up, eyes staring at Jungkook’s with a surprised look. Jungkook sat down in his chair, looking a bit. . . hesitant? “Do you. . . like this author too?” Jungkook stood quiet for a bit, eyes looking down at his desk.
It was after a moment that he looked back up. “. . . yeah. I think he’s. . . good.” Taehyung shouldn’t feel a twinge of annoyance when Jungkook said that his most favorite author was just ‘good’. He frowned, eyebrows furrowing. “He’s not just good, he’s great. Amazing even.” Taehyung didn't mean to sound rude but he was very defensive about the author. He couldn’t help getting a little mad whenever someone would downgrade his work. When Taehyung noticed Jungkook's wide eyes, he immediately acted to apologize. “I-. . . I’m so sorry! I didn't. . .” Taehyung bowed deeply, instantly leaving the room.
He didn't see Jungkook’s shocked expression. He didn't move, not even after Taehyung left, closing the door behind him. After a while Jungkook stood up and walked over to the bookcase, reaching for the book Taehyung held. He opened it to the front cover, reading the author’s name ‘JJ’, Taehyung’s favorite books. . . his favorite author. . . it was amazing to hear and see someone so passionate about such things. Jungkook looked at all the other books the author wrote, each and every one of them were written from the author’s deepest thoughts and feelings. Everything he wrote came from within him. The things he wrote were things he couldn’t say out loud. Jungkook would know, he knows more than anyone.
Like always, dinner was quiet. Though this time, Taehyung felt extra uneasy. He was feeling guilty for yelling at his landlord before storming off without an explanation. He thought Jungkook would be angry at him. On the contrary, he was acting like nothing had happened. Taehyung didn't know why but he felt a bit disappointed. Don't ask him why, he just did. The two ate, only saying a few words when they finished. “Thank you, it was delicious, like always.” Taehyung plainly nodded, grabbing both plates before he went into the kitchen, placing them into the dishwasher.
Once he turned it on, he walked back into the living room, confused to see Jungkook still there. He would normally head to his study or his room whenever he was done with a meal so seeing him here was strange. “Taehyung, I want to apologize. I didn't mean to bad mouth your favorite author, it wasn’t my intention and it was insensitive of me. Please forgive me.” Taehyung became shy when Jungkook bowed lowly, lowering his head. “I. . . no, I’m the one who took it too far. Not everyone is going to enjoy the same things. I guess. . . since I have a sentimental attachment to those books, I kind of got angry hearing someone just say that they’re just good.
Don't apologize, we were both in the wrong.” Jungkook raised his body, sitting down on the couch after he heard Taehyung speak. “Taehyung. . . what’s your favorite thing about those books?” Taehyung had to be honest, he wasn’t expecting that question to come out of his landlord’s mouth. ‘Does. . . does he want to know about me and my taste?’ Taehyung thought before he mimicked Jungkook and sat down on the couch adjacent to him.
“Uhm, well. . . I really enjoy his view of the world around him. He speaks like he’s been through so much but nothing at all at the same time. It’s hard to explain but I guess I kind of understand him. In his books, he shows people how he sees things and he isn’t afraid to call things like they are. There are even some parts where I think he’s funny even though people disagree with me. He’s smart and wise but also sensitive and caring. He sees the good in the little things.” Taehyung was playing with his fingers as he spoke, not wanting to show his feelings towards the author too much.
Jungkook didn't say a word, he was. . . shocked. When Taehyung looked back up at him, he became shy once more. “Uh, sorry. Whilst everyone is obsessed with idols and what not, I’m here obsessing over an author. Pretty lame, I know.” Taehyung scratched the back of his head, trying to hide his embarrassment. “Thank you” Taehyung’s embarrassed smile fell, eyes widening when he saw a serious expression on Jungkook’s face. ‘Huh? He thanked me. . . why?’ Jungkook looked away, eyes going towards his hands. “I’m going to bed now.” Taehyung was still very confused even as he watched Jungkook walk up the stairs, into his room.
“What just happened?” Taehyung furrowed his eyebrows, trying to play everything that just happened. ‘This is something Bogum would love to hear about.’ and with that thought in mind, Taehyung walked to his room, brushing his teeth before he fell asleep.
“He thanked you?” Taehyung nodded his head as he took a sip from his juice. It was lunchtime and the two decided to spend it in a cafe near the university. Taehyung went for a simple sandwich whilst Bogum ordered cold fettuccine pasta. “And that’s it? He didn't explain why he thanked you?” Taehyung gulped down the bite he took of his sandwich, cleaning his mouth with a napkin before he replied. “Maybe he was thanking me for telling him how I felt about JJ?” “Right” Bogum replied sarcastically. Though Bogum was right, it was really weird for Jungkook to thank him for talking about his favorite author.
“Maybe he said thanks cause you’re like him?” Taehyung tsked, shaking his head softly. “He said that JJ was okay, why would he thank me for telling him how I feel?” “Well duh, he can be just like you. Besides, what person who says that they think an author is ‘okay’ when they have the entire collection of said author? Have you thought about that?” Taehyung widened his eyes, realization hitting him. That’s right, Jungkook had every single copy of every book JJ had published. If he didn't like JJ or thought he was just good then why did he have every copy? Taehyung frowned, trying to think of an explanation but found none.
“It’s fishy to me, I don't know about you.” Bogum took another bite from his pasta before he put the lid back on, demeaning it finished. He lifted his tray, threw his trash away and waited for Taehyung to do the same. They were walking back to the campus when Bogum chuckled, making Taehyung frown. “Hey, at least you have something to talk about with him now.” Taehyung rolled his eyes, elbowing his friend in the stomach. “I don't think I’ll be able to pour out any more of my feelings about JJ to him.” Bogum chuckled at that, theatrically placing a hand on his chest, the other on his forehead.
“He’ll know how madly in love you are with the mysterious author. Your dream man even though you’ve never seen the man or even heard him.” He groaned when Taehyung pushed him, making him lose balance. He quickly grabbed onto a pole to steady himself from falling onto the ground. “Shut up, just because I admire him, doesn’t mean that I love the guy.” “Uh huh, sure.” Bogum’s reply came with another laugh, one that caught other’s attention but he didn't care. He was the kind to not care. He was shameless and he didn't give a damn if people thought he was annoying.
Taehyung loved that about him. He was the same. Well. . . not completely. Taehyung wasn’t shameless, he didn't care what people thought but he was definitely not shameless. He would get embarrassed and get shy easily. But thanks to Bogum, he’s able to feel a bit like himself out in public. The two were childhood friends, since middle school. They both came from the same hometown and the two moved here to attend the same college. And as much as Taehyung wanted to room with him, he didn't have the expenses to. Luckily, Taehyung’s brother had a friend near the area that agreed to take care of him for a couple of months until he got a job and was able to support himself. Which was Jungkook, his current landlord.
Which reminds him, “Bogum, do you know anywhere where they’re hiring?” “Hiring? You planning on moving or something?” Taehyung nodded, humming softly. “As much as I like it where I am, I can’t stay there forever. I have to get a job and save up to get my own place. And maybe save up to repay Mr. Jeon for everything he’s done for me.” “There’s other ways to repay him.” Bogum said, wiggling his eyebrows. “Bogum!” Taehyung yelled before he reached in his book bag to hit Bogum with his binder. “What? I was talking about food or like a cake or something!” Taehyung narrowed his eyes at him, giving him a look.
“But you didn't mean that though, I know you.” Bogum chuckled a bit before he nodded, shrugging his shoulders. “Yeah you’re right, I totally was talking about giving him a blow job” Taehyung gasped, instantly running after Bogum when he took off running, laughing as he made his way inside the campus building. Taehyung was also laughing but the blush on his cheeks was enough to show that he wasn’t the type to say or think of those things at all. Taehyung loved his best friend immensely but sometimes, he was a bit too much.
