Minnie has always liked to label herself as a very easy-going person. She fits in with a lot of people, doesn’t mind anything that much and is chill in a lot of ways. But there are a few things that never fail to annoy the hell out of her. Just a few though. A few very peculiar and very specific ones. First, Minnie hates waiting. Second, she hates getting her feet wet (unless she was in the shower). Third, she hates when the wifi throws a tantrum and decides to become a literal snail.
“Has the internet always been this bad in the bathroom?” The cat video she had clicked on a few minutes ago was still loading and at this point, Minnie was already convinced she wasn’t going to be watching anything on YouTube. Minnie ripped her irritated glare away from her phone screen and stared in horror at the water being sprayed onto the floor.
“Can you at least shower responsibly?” The distraught women screeched out in panic and lifted her naked feet up from the now wet floor and hugged them against her chest. She tried to balance her whole weight on the closed toilet lid that she was perched on and when she felt herself sway, she reached for the nearby sink and gripped onto it for stability.
The water was still coming out from beneath the shower curtains.
“Miyeon!” Minnie hissed, feeling her blood beginning to boil. The water that was running a few seconds ago suddenly got cut off and the Thai finally got a reply from the woman showering on the other side of the shower curtain.
“Hm? What’s wrong?”
“Can you not spray water everywhere?” Minnie grumbled out and eyed the floor that was now completely soaked. The shower curtains were supposed to block water from getting all over the whole bathroom floor. It had one job and it wasn’t doing it right at all at the moment.
“I was?” Miyeon’s innocent voice questioned back and Minnie rolled her eyes so hard they actually started hurting. The curtain moved and Miyeon’s head peered out to look at what Minnie was whining about.
“Oh, whoops. Did you get wet?” Miyeon arched a curious eyebrow at the foreigner who was now trying to reach for the bathroom mat located across the room with the tip of her toe.
“No. But if you didn’t stop, I would’ve.” Minnie dryly replied and started using her foot to drag the fabric across the floor before her to soak up all the water. She didn’t know how she landed herself in this situation. It was such a ridiculous, comical situation which could’ve been avoided entirely if Minnie had just said no to Miyeon.
“The next time you ask me to watch a horror movie with you again, please kindly slap me in the face. I am never watching a scary movie with you again if it means I have to sit on a toilet lid and wait for you to finish showering like this.” Minnie whined in annoyance and jutted her lips out a bit into a pout.
The pair had just finished watching a psychological thriller film, a film chosen by Miyeon because she said she wanted to “get used” to watching scary films. Thinking back, it seemed like the Korean didn’t even watch a single second of the movie. Her face was hidden behind her pillow the entire time and every three seconds, she would be yanking on Minnie’s shirt and whispering words like:
Minnie, what just happened?
Minnie, what’s that noise?
Minnie, tell me what she’s doing!
I’m scared Minnie!
Minnie has never had her named called out by another person so much over the span of two hours and half before, ever in her entire life.
To sum it up, the experience was more like Minnie watching the movie alone and narrating the whole film for the Korean. The only good thing that she will secretly admit was that Miyeon was really, really close to her. So close that her hot skin was pressed directly against Minnie’s, her sweet perfume still sticking to the Thai even after the movie ended. Her fingers were always wrapped around Minnie’s upper arm, squeezing ever so tightly whenever there was a jump scare. It hurt, yes, and Minnie did say some words to show her annoyance but she never made a move to pry those gripping fingers away. Why get rid of something that made her feel strangely giddy and light headed?
Being alone with Miyeon made Minnie feel strange. Her insides twist and turn making her feel just, so eccentrically happy. Was that the feeling people refer to when they say they get butterflies? Minnie wasn’t so sure but the feeling was addictive and maybe that’s why despite hating the idea so much, she still chose to sit in a bathroom and stare at the wall just so she can be alone with Miyeon.
But Minnie will never let Miyeon know she was low-key happy to be where she was right now. She can’t afford to let Miyeon know. Therefore, she needs to complain some more to make Miyeon think she was truly pissed at this whole situation.
“Can you shower faster? Do you always like, take a million years to shower?”
“Can you not be so dramatic? It’s only been 10 minutes!” Miyeon shot back and disappeared behind the shower curtain. The sweet scent of Miyeon’s body soap filled the room and Minnie raised an eyebrow in disbelief.
“It’s been 10 minutes and you’ve just started soaping yourself?”
“I’ll be quick. Can you stop whining like a baby? I did promise I’ll buy you lunch for three days.”
“I’m not whining. You call this whining?” Minnie pouted a little, feeling a bit offended that Miyeon had just called her a whiny baby.
“If that’s not whining, I don’t know what is.” Upon hearing the response, Minnie petulantly crossed her arms across her chest and glared daggers at the shower curtain hoping it’ll set on fire if she tried hard enough. She wasn’t used to losing in a verbal argument with Miyeon. The Thai furrowed her eyebrows for a bit in search for a good response that would make Miyeon feel sorry for calling her a whiny baby.
“If you don’t finish in 5 minutes, I’m leaving. And you’re going to be all alone in this bathroom. Or maybe not. But I’m sure that second person won’t be me, might be that woman from the movie we just watched.” Minnie sneered dirtily, feeling extremely proud for coming up with this comeback.
There was a few seconds of silence before the Thai received a reply.
“You won’t do that.” Despite the confident phrasing, Miyeon’s tone was filled to the brim with uncertainty.
“Oh you bet I will.” Minnie’s lips curved up devilishly as she brought her nails up to her face to pick at them. Minnie bit down on her lip to stop herself from laughing when she heard how Miyeon was quickening her soaping process.
“I don’t know why you’re so mean to me. Even Shuhua would sit with me without complaining this much.” Although Minnie couldn’t see the Korean’s face, she could tell from her tone alone that there was a huge pout on her face. Opening her mouth to retaliate, Minnie found nothing coming out. She actually had no idea how to reply to Miyeon’s statement.
It wasn’t like Miyeon was wrong. Even Minnie knew she was being a bit too mean. Starting to feel apologetic, Minnie awkwardly rubbed her palm against her nape and bitterly eyed the bathroom mat.
“Fine. I’ll give you 10 minutes.” She reluctantly offered.
“15 minutes.”
“I—What? No!” Minnie’s mouth dropped open at Miyeon’s proposal. Miyeon was in no place to be bargaining with her in the first place because clearly, Minnie has the upper hand here for she wasn’t the one being a scaredy cat right now.
“10 minutes or I’m leaving.” The Thai declared resolutely making sure her tone leaves no room for further argument.
“Fine. After all those times I cooked for you, bought Pad Thai and milk tea for you, you do this. Fine. If you think it’s a humane thing to—”
“Are you trying to guilt trip me?” Minnie cut the Korean’s rambling off and chewed at the inside of her cheek. Has Miyeon always been this good at manipulating people?
“No. Not at all. But if you feel guilty from hearing all that, then you know what that means.” The water started running again and Minnie was left speechless after hearing Miyeon’s words. For once, the older woman has the last word in an argument between the two of them. The foreigner scratched her head and stared quizzically at the shower curtain. Miyeon wasn’t usually this good with words.
“Since when did you start getting this witty with your words?” Minnie asked curiously, the urge to spite Miyeon no longer there. She was starting to get more amused at the fact that Miyeon was effortlessly roasting her. This might be the most inappropriate thing to say at the most inappropriate time but Miyeon biting back was actually kind of hot.
“I’ll take that as a compliment. Thank you.” A small smile began to make its way onto Minnie’s face. That was supposed to be a compliment. Not giving a reply, Minnie just chuckled a little and found herself sitting patiently on the toilet lid as she scrolled through her phone gallery. She’ll let Miyeon win this argument.
The remaining 10 minutes were nothing but silence saved for the running shower and Miyeon’s occasional humming. Minnie didn’t mind much, she didn’t mind waiting anymore and had settled well in looking through her past photos stored on her phone. To be a bit more specific, she was looking through photos of the both of them when they were still trainees. She swiped past a picture of Miyeon sleeping with her mouth open and snickered.
“—for me?” Minnie looked up from her phone to see Miyeon poking her head out from behind the curtain. The shower had stopped running and the Korean was looking at her with an expectant expression.
“Did you say something?” Minnie tilted her head to the side questioningly.
“Can you give me the towel?” The older woman nudged her chin forward at the shelf and Minnie nodded in realization. She pushed herself up and took a white towel out. She mindlessly threw the fabric to the Korean and sat back down to resume scrolling through her phone.
“That was fast.” Minnie idly commented, not expecting Miyeon to actually finish under 10 minutes. Still engrossed in her phone, Minnie stood up when she heard Miyeon pulling aside the shower curtains and stepping out of the showering area. If Miyeon had finished showering, then her job here was done.
“So I can leave now right?” Minnie said and made way for the door. Just as she neared the door, her breath got knocked out of her when a hand clutched the back of her shirt and forcefully yanked her back.
“Miyeon what the hell?” Minnie screeched and gripped the sink for balance. The floor was wet and the force nearly made her feet slip. She faced the older woman, a scolding remark already at the tip of her tongue. But when she saw how Miyeon’s eyes were as wide as golf balls, her face white as paper, the Thai followed her line of sight to the door.
“Fuck, that’s a big one.” Minnie whispered out and took a step back to create as much distance as possible between her and the entrance door. On the door was the biggest cockroach she has ever laid eyes on. Her skin began to crawl and she gulped slowly.
“Do something.” Miyeon shakily ordered. The woman was hiding behind Minnie’s tall frame, her hands still clinging on the back of Minnie’s shirt for dear life.
“Do what?” Minnie hissed back, her worried eyes never once leaving the cockroach. Miyeon wanted her to do what? What can she do? Minnie was terrified of cockroaches. But she was with Miyeon and she didn’t want to appear like a scaredy cat that would be extremely embarrassing and uncool.
“Hit it, kill it or something I don’t know!” Miyeon said and when the bug moved, the both of them screamed at the top of their lungs. Miyeon was retreating in panic back to the shower area, pulling Minnie along with her while the Thai was trying to stumble backwards without tripping over Miyeon’s feet. The cockroach barely moved an inch and Minnie was already losing her voice.
“Can you not scream like that?!” Minnie twirled around to swat Miyeon’s hands away from her shirt. She was more surprised at Miyeon screaming in her ear than the bug moving itself.
“I can’t help it!” The moment Minnie pushed her hands away, Miyeon immediately brought them to Minnie’s shoulders and held the Thai in front of her like a human shield.
“How are we going to get out?” Minnie eyed the gigantic insect in disgust and shifted her eyes to the bottles of soap lined along the wall. Maybe she could throw them at the insect? But her aiming has never been good.
“I don’t know, you think of something!”
“Okay fine fine wait.” Minnie reached for one of the soap bottles and held it at face level. She locked her eyes on the cockroach and when she was about to throw it, the thing moved again and Miyeon was once again screaming her head off, her nails digging harshly into Minnie’s shoulder.
“Stop screaming! My eardrums are going to burst!” Minnie hissed and rubbed her ears to stop them from ringing. She turned her face back to glare at the older girl.
“You’re standing behind me. Why are you so scared?” Minnie mockingly asked, trying her best to hide the fear present in her voice. Miyeon gave her an apologetic watery smile and Minnie turned around to face her enemy again.
Wiping the sweat off of her eyebrow, she narrowed her eyes and concentrated on aiming. Everything was going just fine, a bit to the right and she will—
“A bit to the left.” She heard the woman behind her comment, the voice shattering her concentration into little pieces.
“Be quiet.”
“Sorry.”
Minnie rolled her eyes and concentrated for the second time. After a few seconds of aiming, she held her breath and pulled the soap bottle back before hurling it across the room. The bottle moved across the bathroom and hit a part of the door that was not even close to where the bug was. As the bottle clattered to the ground, time seemed to slow down as Minnie witnessed the cockroach push itself off the door and spread its wings, taking off into the air.
She felt blood drain from her face and Miyeon was screaming once again behind her. The only difference this time was that Minnie was screaming along with her.
“It flies! It flies fuck! Fuck!” Minnie was sane enough to pull the shower curtains shut, hoping that the barrier was enough to stop the insect from flying into the shower area. But Miyeon though, she was losing it. The woman was stomping her feet against the floor, flailing her arms around thinking that was enough to protect herself from the flying cockroach.
“Miyeon! Miyeon can you calm down—” The words Minnie had got stuck in her throat as something happened. Maybe something even worse than the cockroach. Minnie stared in horror as Miyeon’s towel gave up and fell down, pooling around the Korean’s feet.
The room fell completely silent as the two women just stared at each other in catatonic shock for three full seconds. Minnie didn’t want to do it. She didn’t want to bring her eyes down from Miyeon’s face but her eyes acted before her brain could think and before she knew it, her eyes flicked down to see Miyeon’s everything.
Minnie started choking. Her face began to burn intensely and she started feeling light-headed.
Miyeon’s…Miyeon’s chest…
Minnie was going to faint. She was going to die today.
“Miyeon—” Before she even got the first word out, Miyeon had already snatched her towel off of the floor and sprint out of the bathroom, the cockroach becoming the least of anybody’s worries
Now alone in the bathroom, Minnie stumbled backwards and melted against the bathroom wall. The image of Miyeon’s naked body was still playing inside her head. She blinked her eyes hard to erase the image but the more she tried, the clearer it became.
Bringing her palm up to touch her forehead, Minnie hissed at how hot her skin was.
Minnie was kind of fucked.
