Zoey took a deep breath, put on the biggest smile in her repertoire, and pushed open the door while yelling out an energetic greeting to Bobby. She felt a barrier wrap itself around her to protect her peace from everything that threatened it. She was happy, her smile was bright, and she was already laughing at Bobby’s overly enthusiastic response.
Everything was perfect.

Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.
