Work Text:
It was a cold dreary day. It’s been cloudy for weeks, and as much as he’d (begrudgingly) admit they needed the rain, he’d like to have a nice sunny day again. It was absolutely miserable to investigate in the rain.
Of all the days to have an outdoor crime scene. Hugh could guarantee with his luck that the next case he got when it was nice and sunny out was going to be an indoor case in the basement of some dusty old building.
He felt stupid having his bag be in a clear garbage bag, but it was a lot better than setting all his documents out to dry when he got home because the rain soaked through.
Glaring up at the clouds was an even worse mistake, because now his glasses were covered in rain. As if this crime scene wasn’t bad enough.
“Hey! Mister O’Conner!” Presumably Sebastian called over to him. From where was a mystery, seeing as Hugh was blinder than he normally was.
“I can’t see you. My glasses are wet,” he said, trying to squint through the drops to see if he could find him.
So far it wasn’t very effective.
“I can dry those off for you,” a suddenly very close sounding Sebastian offered.
“Yeah, I’d appreciate it…” Rain wasn’t really something he had been prepared for, and all his forethought went into keeping his bag dry and unfortunately he was soaked all the way through.
His glasses were promptly taken off his soggy head.
Without his glasses, he could only vaguely make out his gray raincoat as it seemed to melt into the pavement. His brown hair was the only part that even slightly stuck out right now.
“There,” Sebastian said, placing Hugh’s glasses back onto his face and straightening them out a little. “That should be better.”
“Still a little wet, but I doubt that matters. I don’t think the rain’s letting up anytime soon,” Hugh grumbled.
He had such a disadvantage going into this case, he was lucky he was going up against Sebastian. The Chief Prosecutor may have cut a lot of assholes, but there weren’t as many that were so willing to budge as much as Hugh might like.
“I think I have an extra umbrella in my car if you want.”
Hugh looked up at him, and actually got a clear look. The jacket he previously thought was grey was just white and covered in black music notation. It clearly had a hood, but Sebastian must not’ve noticed, as his hair was drenched and clinging to his head. Even his little trademark curl wasn’t there. Hugh hadn’t checked himself, but his hair was probably no better. Between the two of them, they were probably completely unrecognizable.
“ You look like you need it more than I do.” Hugh stopped short of wiping a bit of hair from Sebastian’s face. He nearly forgot how he felt about touching.
“I’ll have you know that this is a choice ,” He stated with a grin, before gesturing for him to follow.
“Your master plan for this scene is to get absolutely drenched? What, are you planning on telling me you’re dripping with good looks?”
“No, but we both are. That’s why we’re dating,” Sebastian reflected expertly.
That was why they were together.
“The reason is simple : I’m taking this chance to enjoy the rain. I don’t get to enjoy it very often anymore because I’ve been so swamped with work. I’m taking full advantage of being able to enjoy it like this!” he held out his arms as if to make a point, nearly hitting Hugh in the chest.
“So what’s so great about rain that’s better than a shower?” if Sebastian was going to argue that rain was nice to be in, he was going to have to work for it. So far Hugh and his soaked clothes and glasses were unconvinced.
“Well for one, there’s the smell of rain. Just take a deep breath in,” he said, taking a deep breath in as he opened his trunk.
Hugh did the same, and it smelled like it normally did, but humid. “I don’t smell anything special.”
“You’re being a party pooper, Mr. O’Conner,” he pouted, lightly tapping him with the closed umbrella. “Well if the smell doesn’t sell you, then can you at least appreciate what it sounds like? It’s different than a shower. It’s just so much more…” he waved his hands ambiguously as he talked, trying to find the right word. “Free?”
Hugh opened the umbrella, so he could at least be out of the rain. “Alright, I guess I can listen.”
Again, nothing about it seemed special.
Unless Sebastian had some sort of special hearing, Hugh didn’t think he was missing anything. It was rain falling, and there were people that listened to rain to calm down, but Hugh still didn’t get that. It’s arrhythmic pitter patter wasn’t exactly something Hugh called relaxing.
If it was more even, maybe he could get it, but again that was just a shower. Something Hugh could get at home and not get his glasses soaking wet.
His sassy comment on how rain was worse than a shower disappeared as he looked at Sebastian.
And Hugh couldn’t say it, lest he get snapped out of it, but Sebastian just looked more relaxed and at peace than Hugh had ever seen him.
He was never told he was dating a frog. Not that Hugh particularly cared. He was cute regardless.
“I think your argument is missing a decisive piece of evidence.”
Sebastian’s eyes opened, blinking up at him. “Huh?”
“I think one of the first times we ever talked after getting our badge was in the rain. You were talking about how we weren’t rivals, and we were partners. I still think that’s the coolest thing you’ve ever said.”
The confusion on Sebastian’s face quickly turned into a bashful smile as he looked away. He drew his baton to conduct as if to distract from the cute face he was making.
“I-Is that so? I’m certain I’ve said many other cool things since then. I’ll have you know I'm first-class when it comes to cool.”
Hugh couldn’t help but chuckle at him. “Yeah, but that’s still the coolest. It really keeps things in perspective and helps me be a good defense attorney.”
It seemed his poor boyfriend reached his limit. His face was completely red as he retreated back to the crime scene.
“W-We both have jobs to do. Busy busy busy!” he stammered out as he power walked away.
He would apologize later. Neither of them were going to get a lot done today.
While he was there, maybe he could thank him.
Because now he had a reason to like the rain.
