Work Text:

Day 2 ~ Coffee Shop • UniversityFine Arts

If someone told Oikawa that he would open a coffee shop with his best friend when he was in high school, he would say it was nothing short of a dream come true. Now, four years out of college and successfully co-owning Happy Bean Coffee Shop , he could say that his dream had become a reality.

He sighed, wiping off the front counter as Suga went around wiping the tables. It was a quiet little shop, tucked away in the middle of a shopping district. They stayed busy enough, though it was hard not to when "two boys as pretty as yourselves run it", as many customers said.

They were just about to close when the bell rang. "I'm sorry, we're closed," Oikawa said, not looking up from the counter.

"Not even for me? I practically helped make this place."

Oikawa smiled. He knew that voice. He sighed, slinging the rag over his shoulder, putting his other hand on his hip. "I suppose. Kō-chan would have a fit if I-"

"Daichi!"

The silverette in question came running towards the front door, monkeying onto their customer.

Daichi kissed the mole under his eye. "Hey, babe."

"Did you just get off work?"

Daichi nodded, setting him down. "I wanted to surprise you and walk you home."

"That's so sweet of you!" He looked behind him. "Who's your friend?"

"This is Iwaizumi Hajime, the new trainer Ukai just hired. Remember me telling you about him?"

"I do." He stuck out his hand. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Sugawara Kōshi, Daichi's boyfriend. But you can just call me Suga."

"It's a pleasure." He shook his hand. "I've heard a lot about you from Daichi." He looked over the silverette's head. "That your coworker?"

Suga turned to see Oikawa furiously wiping down the counter. It was easy to see how red his face was. "Co-owner actually. I don't know why he's being so antisocial." He walked over to the counter, leaning over to whisper to the brunette. "What's the matter?"

"...You didn't tell me that Daichi had hot coworkers!"

Suga glanced over his shoulder. It took all his willpower not to laugh. "So you're being all mopey because you think he's cute-"

"No, not cute, Sugawara. Hot. I mean, are you looking at him?!"

"Not at the moment but I was early." He took the rag from him, walking behind the counter and into the backroom. Oikawa followed him.

"You don't see it 'cause you only have eyes for Daichi."

"What can I say? I know my man when I see him."

"You're completely missing the point, Kō-chan!" He took off his apron with a whine.

"No, you're just being ridiculous." He grabbed to carryout boxes. "If you think he's cute, just go and talk to him."

"You haven't had to go through this since you're still dating your high school sweetheart, but it's not that easy." He watched Suga take the last three Happy Bean cupcakes.

"Take what you want. The rest goes in front of the shop free of charge like always." He put two of them in one box and one in the other.

"How did you ask Daichi out?"

"Daichi actually asked me out but he didn't seem like this much of a mess. I mean, we knew each other for a year and a half before we started dating. Look," he sighed, gathering up all the extra pastries and putting them in boxes. "I've known you since college and you've been weird about dating ever since I've met you. You're handsome enough to get any guy you want wrapped around your finger. Why not just give it a try?"

"How?"

"...You're a barista. You have plenty of chances."

"You're implying that he'll come back."

Suga turned over his shoulder, balancing the dozen boxes in his arms. He winked. "I have my ways." He walked back out to the front before Oikawa had a chance to question him. "Daichi, can you be a dear and put these out front? The small boxes up top are ours."

Daichi grabbed all the dozen boxes while Suga grabbed the smaller ones. Iwaizumi watched the interaction. "What's going on?"

"We put out all our extras for people to come and take. They're mainly for the homeless but we don't mind who takes them," Oikawa answered with a shy smile.

Iwaizumi copied the gesture. "Wow…that's really kind of you both."

"And our kindness doesn't stop there," Suga said, handing Iwaizumi the smallest box. "It's our Happy Bean Specialty Cupcake, sure to make you smile!"

"Oh, you don't have to-"

"I insist. You'll have to come back and tell us how it was."

Oikawa looked at Suga in shock. How is he so good at this?

"Alright, everything's set up. Ready to go?" Daichi held the front door open and the three of them walked out.

"This is where we part ways," Suga said, turning to face Oikawa, who was grabbing his car keys, and Iwaizumi, who was getting ready to walk home. They all exchanged quick goodbyes before they parted. Daichi looked at Suga, who had this knowing look in his eye. “That’s the look that means you’re plotting something.”

Suga just chuckled, wrapping his arm around Daichi’s. “It’s nothing. Just thinking about how I’m going to play matchmaker."

Business was booming considering that the shop hadn’t been open for too long. The thought made Oikawa smile as he stood behind the register. Suga came out from the back with a fresh tray of muffins and bread, placing them under the heater. The chiming bell cut through the quiet chatter of the shop.

“Hi there! Welcome to Happy Bean Coffee Shop,” the two owners said in unison, looking up.

Suga smiled. “You’re just full of surprises, aren’t you?” He tried to refrain from PDA, especially at work, so he resorted to sass instead.

Daichi laughed. “I just thought I’d bring the gang by for some coffee. Get your business up.”

“But it seems you two don’t have a problem with that,” Iwaizumi said, looking at Oikawa with a smile.

Suga looked towards the door then proceeded, seeing that no one was coming. “Some introduction for you, Oikawa. You already know Daichi and Iwaizumi, but the other two are Kuroo,” he pointed to the one with black hair. “And Bokuto,” he said, pointing to the one who looked strangely like an owl. “They’re all trainers at Ukai’s fitness center. Guys, this is my co-owner, Oikawa. We’ve known each other since college.”

“Daichi said you were running a cute little shop but I wasn’t expecting this,” Kuroo said, looking over the menu. “Nice going, Suga.”

“What can I say? I’m fabulous, I know.” He rang up Daichi’s order without even asking him. “Are you guys going to have time to sit down and drink something or do you all have to leave?”

“We have to run. Just wanted to stop by and show them around,” Daichi said, looking at Suga with a smile, handing him some money.

“That’s very nice of you.”

“Some of us actually have to order to get something, love birds,” Bokuto said, laughing as the duo turned red.

“Right.” Suga turned to Oikawa. “Can you take the orders while I go set everything up?”

“Yeah, sure.” He turned to the remaining three. “What can I get for you all?”

“I’ll just take an iced coffee,” Kuroo said, still looking down at the menu.

“Milk and sugar syrup?”

“No sugar syrup.”

“I’ll have the same thing,” Bokuto said, looking over Kuroo’s shoulder. “But I want both.”

“Alright…and for you?” He looked, trying to stop the blush from forming. Damn you, Mr. Refreshing. How could you do this to me?

“I’ll just take a latte,” Iwaizumi said, still looking at Oikawa. The brunette had to avert his gaze.

“Will all these be separate?” The group nodded. “Alright, ¥275 for the iced coffee and ¥220 for your latte, Iwaizumi.” They each placed the exact amount in the tray. “Alright, I’ll have those right out for you!”

Oikawa went to the back to find Sugawara writing on a cup with a marker. “You two need to get out of the honeymoon phase. It makes me nauseous.”

“We’re not even married.”

“Even so.” Oikawa started to brew the coffee for the three orders. “I can’t believe you left me out there to fend for myself.”

“You’ve been doing this for four years now. What are you talking about?”

“Him! You left me alone with him !”

“And yet, you survived.” He poured Daichi’s latte into a to-go cup, grabbing three more cups. “What’s what?”

“Owl Head and Bed Head both ordered an iced coffee with milk and sugar syrup and only milk respectively. Iwaizumi ordered a latte.”

Suga wrote the information down. “Want me to add anything special to Iwaizumi’s cup?”

“Please don’t.” He grabbed the two clear cups, pouring both the coffee and ice into them before going to grab the milk and syrup. Suga started on Iwaizumi’s latte. “I think you’re trying to make this way easier than it should be.”

“I think you’re making it much harder than it needs to be.” He grabbed Bokuto and Kuroo’s prepared drinks before nodding at Iwaizumi’s. “Let’s go.” They made their way back to the front. “Alright! Two iced coffees for Bokuto and Kuroo. One with milk and syrup and the other with milk!”

“And a latte for Iwa-chan!”

“‘Iwa-chan’?” Kuroo asked, holding back his laugh as he took his drink. “That’s a new one.”

Iwaizumi scowled, but he couldn’t hide the fact that his cheeks were turning red. “I never agreed on that stupid name. This is my first time hearing it.”

“C’mon, man! A cute name from a cute barista. What’s not to love about that?”

“I’ll tell Kenma that you called someone else cute.”

“Please don’t. He’ll give me the silent treatment again.”

“Anyway,” Daichi interrupted, looking at Suga and Oikawa. “We’re having an open gym later today. You guys should come!”

Oikawa just looked at Suga. The silverette shrugged. “Don’t look at me. I have a membership there.”

“I didn’t even know you still worked out.”

“Not everyone can look like you just by jogging every morning.” Suga rolled his eyes, smiling at his boyfriend. “We’ll be there.” The four of them waved before leaving the shop. It was a couple more seconds before Suga spoke again. “You think Iwaizumi’s hot now…just wait till you see him all sweaty in his workout gear.”

It took Oikawa even longer to process that information. He turned beet red. “Kō-chan!”

“I’ve never been in here before. It’s pretty impressive.”

“I know! Ukai outdid himself.”

“You’ve already been here once this week. Back for more, Sugawara?”

Suga turned. “Hey, Ukai! Just bring a friend to the open gym. Since I already have a membership here, I just decided to drop by again.”

“You guys made it!”

Daichi, Kuroo, Bokuto, and Iwaizumi all came up behind Ukai.

Oikawa thought he would die on the spot. Suga wasn’t kidding when he mentioned Iwaizumi in his workout clothes.

“Yeah,” he said, hoping his voice wasn’t too shaky. “Can’t pass up on an opportunity to work out.”

“Anything in particular the two of you hoping to work on?” Kuroo asked, gesturing around the gym. “If you want it, Ukai’s probably got it.”

“I’ll stick to my usual if you’re not too busy, Daichi,” Suga said, causing the other three plus Ukai to roll their eyes.

“You’ve got spunk, Sugawara,” Ukai said, shaking his head. “You’re the only person I know who can continuously handle Sawamura’s Workout from Hell and then purposefully come back for more.”

“What can I say? I have a favorite trainer.”

“It’s not even about it being Daichi,” Iwaizumi said. “You’re a lot stronger and a lot more fit than you let on. You can outdo some of the regulars here easily.”

“Well, enough wasting time,” Suga shrugged, idly tossing his water bottle. “And no reason to go easy on Tōru either. He’s plenty fit.” The two of them walked off.

Kuroo did a once over of the brunette. “Suga said that you jog every day so there’s no need for endurance and just looking at your arms, I’d say you’re pretty solid there. Hajime, wanna help him with legs?”

“Sure.”

It was official. Oikawa Tōru would die today.

“You can put your stuff in one of the lockers and then we’ll get started.”

“Yeah, okay.”

The workout had started out smoothly enough. In all honesty, Oikawa could’ve stood to go through Daichi’s “Training from Hell”, but he wouldn’t want to interrupt Suga’s quality time with his boyfriend. It wasn’t until about halfway through his workout that his knee had decided to give. It buckled, sending him to the floor. Only, he never hit the ground.

Instead, he landed in Iwaizumi’s arms.

The trainer quickly sat him down on a nearby workout bench. “Are you okay?”

Oikawa’s brain was completely static. “What? Yeah, I’m fine!”

“What happened?”

“It’s just my knee. I’ve been playing volleyball since middle school. During my first year of high school, I was going in to serve and I landed wrong. Didn’t blow out my knee but came pretty close.”

Iwaizumi hummed, grabbing the brunette’s leg. Oikawa’s mind went blank at the touch. The trainer straightened and bent his knee a few times.

“I didn’t know you played. But seeing your athleticism, it makes a lot of sense. Do you still play?”

Oikawa shook his head, even though Iwaizumi couldn’t see it. “I teach little kids how to play. I’ll play every now and again recreationally, but it’s not something I do on a regular basis.”

“Well, your injury’s not bad at all. I think you just overworked.” He paused, dropping his gaze to the floor. “If you want, we can take the rest of the time you’re here to work out your knee. I’m no physical therapist, but I’m sure it would do something.”

Oikawa smiled. Not only was he hot, but he was considerate. “Yeah…I’d like that.”

“This is the day. Today, I’m gonna do it.”

“Is the pep talk really necessary?”

“Kō-chan, you don’t understand! What if I make a fool of myself?! What if he says no?!”

“What if you stop thinking of ‘what ifs’ before you sike yourself out and don’t do it?” Suga placed his hands on his best friend’s shoulders. “I saw you guys at the open gym last week. If that wasn't a blooming romance, I don’t know what is.”

“But-” The bell chimed from the front of the shop.

“No buts! Get out there!” Oikawa and Suga went out to greet them all again. This time, Oikawa went to the back and Suga took everyone’s order. “Same thing as last time?”

The group nodded. “By the way,” Iwaizumi started, looking at the display case of pastries. “That cupcake you gave me a couple weeks ago was great.”

“I told you it would make you smile! I’ll pass the compliment to Oikawa. He was the one who came up with the recipe you know.”

“Did he?”

“Came up with meaning taste testing and telling me things to add and take out but yeah.”

“Now I want a cupcake,” Bokuto pouted. Suga laughed. It seemed like even his hair was pouting.

“It’s eight in the morning, Bo. I don’t think now’s the best time for a cupcake.”

“I may or may not make a few extras if you all stop by later today,” Suga said as they all placed their change in the tray. “I’ll have those all right out for you.” He walked to the back to find Oikawa capping a marker. “Did you do it?”

Oikawa let out a dramatic breath. “I did it.”

“Did you put your number on the cup?”

“I did.”

Suga smiled, brewing enough coffee for four cups. “I’m proud of you.”

“Thanks for pressuring me into doing this.”

“What kind of friend would I be if I didn’t make you do things against your will every now and again?” He moved to write on his cup for Daichi.

“Do you really think it’s gonna work?”

“I think it will,” Suga said, not looking up from his cup. “When I play matchmaker, it usually always works.”

“How many times have you played matchmaker?”

“More times than you’d think.”

The coffee maker dinged and Suga grabbed the syrup and milk while Oikawa started on the lattes. Between their combined efforts, it didn’t take long before they were carrying out four cups of coffee. “Two lattes for a Mr. Sawamura and a Mr. Iwaizumi,” Suga said, passing them both their cups.

“And two iced coffees for Rooster Head and Owl Head.”

“You are killing it with the nicknames, aren’t you?” Kuroo asked, sipping his coffee. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“Yeah, thanks!” Bokuto said and the two of them were already out the door.

Daichi shook his head. “I’ll see you later tonight, Kōshi. Bye, Oikawa.”

“Bye, Dai! Bye, Iwaizumi!” Suga watched the two of them walk out the door before he turned to Oikawa. His friend was a little more than shell shocked. “Um, Tōru?”

“...I did it. I gave the hot athletic trainer my number.” He turned to Suga with a smile bright enough to rival his. “I really did it!”

“You did! I’m proud of you!” The two of them hugged. “Now, we just wait for the text!”

“Hey, Daichi? Did Suga hand me your cup by accident?”

“No, why?”

“There’s writing on it.”

Daichi looked at his own cup. “No, this one’s from Suga. Did you read it?”

Iwaizumi looked down to do just that.

I like you a latte, Iwa-chan! Let’s go on a date <3

T ōru ;)

The message was then followed by a phone number. Iwaizumi blushed.

Daichi laughed, leaning over to look at the message. “Seems like someone got the guts to ask you out before you did.”

Iwaizumi chuckled. “That smooth bastard…”

“Well, what are you waiting for? Knowing Oikawa, he’s probably freaking out. Text him!”

“Alright, alright.” Iwaizumi pulled out his phone with a smile.

Tōru

Hey, Oikawa. It’s Iwaizumi

About that date…I think I’ll take you up on that offer
