Summary
Mike and Will both have decent lives carved out for themselves. Will is thriving in New York except for one thing; none of his attempts at a relationship ever last longer than a few weeks. Will knows the constant phone calls and weekend visits from his best friend aren't helping, and decides to call Mike and tell him the truth; that he needs space from him so he can finally move on.
Mike, who had no idea Will still harbored any feelings for him, gets on a train immediately and shows up in the city at Will's doorstep, ready to finally confess what he'd been holding back for years.

Mike's known all along, but didn't think Will felt the same after he said it'd only been a crush. They argue about it, then they fuck about it, then spend 5 more chapters building a relationship about it

Mike’s jaw tightened, a flash of pure, territorial fire hitting his eyes. "A pussy? Is that what you think?" He gripped Will’s hair, pulling his head back to expose his throat. "I’m going to make you forget you ever had to use that fucking toy, Will. You’re going to scream my name until the neighbors call the cops."
"Then do it, Mike," Will challenged, his voice a filthy, desperate rasp. "Fucking do it. Stop talking and show me how much I belong to you."

Mike abandons his nonchalant act for a raw, possessive devotion, admitting he heard Will’s private moments and intends to claim him completely. “Does it need to be like ceramics last semester? Do I need to drop you off and pick you up at the door again like a fucking preschooler?” Will shakes his head as best as he can, a whimper escaping from his lips. Mike grips his jaw tighter. “Speak.”
“N-no, Mike.” Yes, actually, Will wants to say. He liked it when Mike did that last semester, walking him to and from class like Will’s big, scary guard dog. Sometimes, if Will was lucky, Mike would wait in the hallway during his class, clutching some mass market paperback, spine cracked and curled in on itself. Even big, scary guard dogs have owners, Will would think as Mike stayed put for him.
In which someone asks for Will’s number and it makes Mike murderously angry.

Summary
For a long while, which Will felt too embarrassed to admit, part of the reason he left this secret unsaid was so he could cling on to the smallest scrap of possibility. A little imaginary corner of his mind and heart where he could pretend Mike might maybe, just maybe, one day feel something more.
It was foolish, he knew this. But it had been his.
And now? Now it was gone.
They’ve survived the near end of the world. Now Will just has to survive telling Mike the truth. It seems a lot easier than it is.
