“-And so I said, ‘you belong in a museum’,” Ezreal exclaimed, rather loudly, as he continued on his so-called “riveting tale of adventure”. Kayn was just nodding along at this point, trying to ignore the eyes of on-lookers on the busy Piltover street that were drawn in the sheer force of energy that his boyfriend was.
“Guess what happens next?” Ezreal asked, and Kayn wanted to reply with “Who cares?” , the puppy-eyed look that his boyfriend was giving him overwhelmed that desire.
“Oh, did he shoot a laser through the bandit’s chest, piercing through the guy behind him as well?” Rhaast, a surprisingly interested audience in Ezreal’s stories, asked inside of Kayn’s mind.
“Did you blink away?”
“I blinked away with the treasure, making my heroic retreat to fight another day!” Ezreal mocked the cheers of a crowd cheering with a breathy voice, while Kayn accompanied with a slow clap.
“Not bad, although if it were me, I wouldn’t have been caught in the first place,” Kayn teased as Ezreal gave an exaggerated pout.
“It’s not my fault that I fell for the pitfall trap.”
“It is entirely your fault that you fell for the pitfall trap.”
“Anyway,” Ezreal said, abruptly changing the topic, “Are you excited for the super awesome adventure that I have planned for us this evening?”
“Last time you called our date a ‘super awesome adventure’, we ended up fighting our way through a factory of evil machines and used the funds for a night at an expensive hotel and restaurant,” Kayn gave a pause (entirely for dramatic effect), “So yes, I am quite excited.”
“I did not appreciate being treated as a large umbrella for you to sneak me into the hotel; just to watch you two eat and-” Rhaast helpfully added as Kayn tuned him out quickly. No need to be thinking those thoughts currently.
“It’s rare that you get to leave Ionia, so I have to make sure each one counts when you come over to my home turf,” Ezreal grinned. The two of them didn’t get to meet as often as they would like, but Kayn noted that Ezreal always seemed to be hearing about some ‘rare artifact’ or ‘ancient treasure’ that he had to investigate in Ionia (which most of the time resulted in being nothing but a rumor, supposedly).
“Yes, well, I look forward to seeing where you take us this time around,” Kayn was hard-pressed to keep a grin from creeping up on his face as he thought of the other tidbit of information. Something for the right moment later.
Ezreal grabbed hold of Kayn’s hand, and then a second later, decided to just latch himself onto Kayn’s entire right arm. The two of them walked together like that through the evening streets of Piltover. Ezreal recounted more of his ‘epic adventures’, which Kayn gave audience to while Rhaast commentated in his mind.
“The first landmark on our super awesome adventure is here…” Ezreal began narrating in an ominous voice, “Rumors have said that this place has existed for years, but it may even be older than that. The location is never the same as the last, but it’s always the same-- for just a small price, you can experience one of the dangerous artifacts of ancient power that they remove from a heated, metal cage.”
“Kid, this is a corn dog stand,” the owner cut-in with a deadpan voice.
“Otherwise known as a corn dog stand!” Ezreal cheerfully continued, as if he hadn’t heard the owner speak.
“Does this have any relation to the ‘hot dog’ you had me try on our first date?” Kayn asked curiously, remembering how troublesome it was to wield Rhaast against some street punks while also enjoying his hot dog.
“Close, but not quite,” Ezreal shook his finger as if saying ‘watch me’ as he walked up to the owner, “May I please have two corn dogs, my good venor?”
“Comin’ right up,” the owner took Ezreal’s money and exchanged it with two golden brown objects on a stick. Ezreal returned and handed one to Kayn who took it and turned it over curiously. It definitely smelled good.
“Ouch, that’s hot,” Ezreal practically yelped as he bit into it again, clearly not caring for the pain that he was in. “Be careful Kayn, you might want to wait for it to cool off-”
“Worry not, I am no weakling-” Kayn said, taking a bite. The first thought to enter his mind was how delicious it was. The second thought to enter his mind was that it was, in fact, very hot.
“Dumbass,” Rhaast supplied helpfully as Kayn joined his boyfriend in burning his tongue. Regardless, the two of them bore through the pain and devoured their corn dogs eagerly.
“Come again,” the owner called while not successfully hiding a laugh, the two of them walking away with burnt tongues and corn dogs in their stomachs.
“That was delicious,” Kayn said as he took Ezreal’s hand, interlocking their fingers as his boyfriend took the lead for their next destination.
“Wasn’t it? As the smartest person I know says, ‘you don’t know Piltover till you’ve had a corn dog’!”
“Do they actually say that?”
“Well, seeing as I’m the smartest person that I know, yes they do.” Ezreal nodded with seriousness. Kayn couldn’t help but let out a small laugh at his boyfriend’s antics.
“Of course, now that we have some food in our perfectly toned stomachs,” Ezreal giving a pat to both his and Kayn’s stomachs with his free hand, “We can move to the next part of my super awesome adventure.”
“Which is…?” Kayn raised an eyebrow, still feeling the warmth of Ezreal’s touch against his skin.
“Oh, you’ll see.” Ezreal winked mischievously.
~~~
“Is this what you meant by ‘you’ll see’?” Kayn asked, as he leaned on Rhaast over the moaning forms of individuals scattered across the ground.
“In my defense, I expected them to put up more of a challenge,” Ezreal raised his hands in mock surrender, the cheers of the small crowd roaring around the two of them in the fighting pit.
“I am a master of shadow magic, wielder of a darkin-”
“HA HA HA, BRING ON THE NEXT WAVE OF VICTIMS,”
“Mooks like these will not pose a challenge.”
“Well I considered stealing $69 from one of the banks so we could fight the sheriffs, but that would result in too much legal stuff,” Ezreal sighed in defeat, disappointed.
“...Don’t feel bad Ezreal,” Kayn could feel guilt stirring in his gut, “I still had an enjoyable time. We made quite a bit of money off of this too, didn’t we?”
“You really had a good time?” Ezreal peeked at Kayn from the corner of his eye.
“The best time I have is when I’m with you,” Kayn nodded, patting Ezreal on the back reassuringly, “Being able to show off my prowess in battle to you is just an added benefit.”
“You do look good when fighting,” Ezreal returned to his cheerful self, smiling happily as they walked out of the arena.
“So do you, when you aren’t blinking around,” Kayn noted, only seeing Ezreal in fights a few seconds before he blinks somewhere else again.
“I don’t like to be pinned down,” Ezreal said, before pausing to think, “Well-.”
“You two had a good showing in there, Ez,” the youthful voice of the woman who ran this fighting pit interrupted Ezreal. She held a small stack of cash that she handed over to him.
“All in a day’s work, Chainsaw.” Ezreal smiled as he flipped the bills, “...There isn’t that much here.”
“Well, turns out folks think that the guy with the giant scythe,” Chainsaw points to Kayn, “Will win the fight. Now stop complaining and go buy your boyfriend something nice.”
“That was the plan,” Ezreal and Chainsaw exchanged a high-five before he turned to Kayn once again. “Ready for part three of our super awesome adventure.”
“Does it involve purchasing something?”
“How’d you know?” Ezreal frowned.
“You just admitted it in your talk.” Kayn nodded to Chainsaw, who had begun walking away at this point.
“Well, shoot,” Ezreal scrunched up his face in displeasure about having part of his surprise revealed. However, he quickly just shrugged it off, “You don’t know what it is yet though, so I’m still in the clear to knock your socks off.”
“I’m not wearing socks.” Kayn supplied helpfully.
“Your underwear off, then, and don’t you dare say you’re not wearing any.”
~~~
“And here we are at the third destination,” Ezreal waved his hands wide, spinning around as if presenting the small, luminescent building behind him.
“What’s this place, then?” Kayn asked, looking at the brown knots that appeared to be displayed inside of a heated box.
“This place sells a lot of different stuff, but they do the best soft pretzels,” Ezreal nodded as he walked up to the counter, dragging Kayn with him. “They’ve also got different kinds of lemonade. Do you have any preference?”
“...I’ll leave it to your judgment?” Kayn looked at the containers behind the counter and couldn’t tell the differences in flavor just from the colors.
“We’ll take one regular, one cinnamon sugar, and one large strawberry lemonade, please,” Ezreal paid with the money that he got from Chainsaw’s fighting pit. Kayn soon found himself holding a warm pretzel that felt good against the chilly air as the moon started to rise.
“I recommend tearing off pieces and eating it while we walk,” Ezreal suggested as he ignored what he just said and took a large bite of his own, his other hand holding the drink. Kayn followed his boyfriend’s advice and tore off a bit, taking a bite as warmth flowed into his mouth.
“It’s delicious,” Kayn smiled as he put the rest of the bit in his mouth so he could wrap an arm around Ezreal’s shoulders as they walked.
“How would you rate this super awesome adventure thus far?” Ezreal quizzed as he leaned his head on Kayn’s shoulder, taking a drink of the strawberry lemonade.
“Perfect, per usual when I’m with you,” Kayn sighed happily, “Although I don’t think this is all you had planned this evening?”
“That depends on how many days you plan on staying,” Ezreal spoke casually, but Kayn felt a bit hurt in his chest that Ezreal made such preparations with Kayn’s impending goodbye in mind. However…
“Actually, I had planned to take an extended vacation away from Ionia,” Kayn couldn’t help but let a smile spread across his face, “I was thinking that a certain adventurer would be the perfect person to spend my time with-”
Kayn was cut off with a kiss from Ezreal, a sweet sensation spreading across his own as he returned it to his boyfriend.
“Was that the strawberry lemonade on your lips?”
“Do you want some?” Ezreal gave a full tooth grin, offering the drink to Kayn. “There’s a lot of different flavors too.”
“I think I would like another taste, yes,” Kayn smiled as he wrapped his arms around Ezreal, kissing his boyfriend once again.
