There are so many things Percy could have said or done in this situation. Instead he spews every variation of fuck that he can.
"Fuck-fuckity-fuck-fuck-fuuuuuck-fuck."
The little boxes stare at him, nestled comfortably around his boyfriend's socks. It's not a drawer he usually digs in, but he was very short on socks after not doing laundry for an entire week. Sometimes adhd can be a real bitch. Now he's stealing Jason's fluffiest pair and simultaneously trying not to collapse to the ground in heaving sobs.
He's afraid to open the two velvet boxes. Afraid to ruin the surprise. But it's unmistakable what they are.
He wonders if Annabeth knows what their boyfriend has planned. After a second of racing through memories over the last few weeks he decides she probably doesn't. Secrets make her jittery. She starts hiding lots of things from them when she has a secret just so she doesn't end up spilling it. Usually they can coax it out of her with some well placed kisses, braiding her hair, and chocolate if things get desperate.
But she's been her usual level of buzzing over the weeks. Nothing remotely out of the ordinary. Even Jason hasn't seemed out of the ordinary. Not quiet or overly anxious the way he can be when he's keeping something in.
He stares at the black cubes, holding a promise he's known he'd keep since he said his first 'I love you' to sky-shocked gazes.
His eyes glass over as he wrings the socks in his hand. A feeling beyond happiness unfolds within him. It makes him feel like sunset, like the first wave he catches when he surfs, like the shower after sword-fight training, like coming home to see his golden-haired hearts curled up on the couch enraptured in another true crime documentary. He feels loved.
Jason is about to propose. They're all about to be engaged.
"Percy," Annabeth's voice wonders from the passage, coming closer.
With a smile electric enough to power a city he eases the drawer closed and goes to hug the beats of his heart.
