Work Text:
As the music started, they held each other close. The feeling of warmth, and the familiar aroma from Adoras perfume made catra feel a much needed wave of peace and relief. She took Adoras hand and they started moving in perfect synchrony like water swirling through the banks of a meandering river.
Catra couldn’t believe it, her love was with her again. She never stopped thinking about her, or this moment. As they danced together her mismatched eyes gazed at Adora but she never looked back, always off to the side or seemingly straight through Catra, unblinking.
They continued to dance around the room, Catra noticing the flowers arranged on a table at the front. Wondering who put them there. The colours reminded her of when they were young, when they used to sit together in the fields behind Catras parents house. How Adora always used to bring her a single Lilly every week. Her favourite flower. She remembered the last time Adora had given her flowers, the happy expression on her face starting to fade.
Memories started flooding into Catras mind, countless good, a handful of bad, and ones from so so many years ago. How they first met, their first holiday abroad together and how Adora got in trouble, their first house, and their first fight.
Catras face now showing an almost blank expression to match the one Adora had shown throughout the whole dance so far. Their first fight reminded her of all the times she was stubborn for no reason, caused trouble and made things difficult for no reason. All the things she regretted saying, and a list too long of the things she wished she had.
As they continued to dance, Adora still avoiding Catras gaze, tears started to slowly roll down Catras cheeks. Despite everything she knew she loved Adora with all her heart. She always had, from the very first moment they met, and would for the rest of her life.
The music drew to an end, and the stark reality dawned. She had been dancing alone the whole time, with Adoras final words resonating within her head.
Don't cry, hold your head up high, and keep moving forward.
