By the Love in My Heart

Summary:

Kyoka screamed in a guttural, eerie tone. It was loud and clear and reached Denki’s ears as if a call for help.

Suddenly, Denki was up out of his seat and Momo was on the other side of the room, limp against the wall. In the moment, Denki didn’t see Momo, all he saw was the enemy who hurt his love. And he would do anything to keep her safe. He was seeing red, his heartbeat drowning out the screams of the class, all except for Kyoka.

Or: It's been a weekend since Kyoka was bitten and it's time to go home. Kyoka and Denki are excited to see their friends again, but when their trauma reawakens, will they find a new normal?

Notes:

AAAAAH, I actually managed another one! My promise is not in vain! Anyway, here is the continuation of the series... I hope you like it!

Please be warned that Kyoka and Denki do a magic ritual that includes blood drinking, if that grosses you out, please skip around it.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The shining afternoon light filtered through the Medical room the Monday after the attack. The walls looked orange despite its beige color from the glow. Denki smiled softly, Kyoka was awake and doing well. Denki had spent the day with her, forgoing school because he couldn’t bear to leave Kyoka.

Kyoka was still very tired, she did lose a lot of blood after all. But, thankfully, she was feeling much better after a long weekend of medical help. Part of it, she thought, was that her boyfriend was with her the whole time. He didn’t leave her side unless she asked him to and it was a comfort for her, she felt protected, despite what had transpired.

Another thing that might have helped was that she was moved to the UA medical ward the day after she was bitten. The doctors at the hospital thought her well enough and recommended treatment from Recovery Girl.

So there Kyoka sat on her medical bed with Denki sitting on a chair to her left. She looked at the woman, nervously flicking her head between the nurse and Denki beside her.

Recovery Girl sighed. “You're looking fine, dear.” she said. “You'll be able to go back to your class dorms tonight…” she continued, smiling at the injured child. Kyoka sighed in response.  “but no fighting! At least, not until your wound has healed.” she added. Kyoka nodded her head yes.

Denki wanted to kiss Kyoka when he heard Recovery Girl’s words. After Kyoka was bitten, he tried to stay distant in fear that she would react badly to his vampirism, but to his surprise, she became very affectionate. Later he learned that she had already known about him and the incident was just bad luck. It was quite a shock, but he was relieved to know she had accepted him.

Suddenly, his thoughts were snapped up when Kyoka responded to Recovery Girl, “That’s okay. Just let me leave .” He smiled at his girlfriend. She had complained a great deal at her bedridden status and he had heard all of it. He giggled softly at the look she gave him.

“Oh don’t you start! You complained right along with me!” she said, playfully hitting his shoulder.

--

The night was fully upon them when the two made it to Heights Alliance. The pair stared at the tall doors and sighed. Kyoka felt like crying a little when she saw the building lit up with yellow light.

There she stood in nothing but a hospital gown she had been wearing since Saturday night. It now being Monday, and her wearing only a hospital gown made Kyoka feel utterly bare. She didn’t have another set of clothes on her and the ones she was wearing the night of the attack were completely ruined with blood. The awareness of this was not helped by the cold breeze that seeped through the thin fabric clenching against Kyoka’s skin. She held her shoulders and shivered.

Taking a deep breath, she held her boyfriend's arm. She could do this with him, she reminded herself. Always with him.

When the two entered, they were shocked to find the entirety of the class gathered in the commons. It was late, and many slept much earlier than the current time. They hadn’t expected so many to be there. And when the class realized the pair, the commons erupted with voices. The pair were back! They were safe! Many of the classmates rose up out of their chairs and ran towards the two.

“Are you okay? I was so worried, Kyoka!” Mina said with a pained expression.

Kyoka felt a bit terrible, she didn’t mean to keep any secrets but there wasn’t any way for her to truly explain what happened.

“I…” her voice rasped, it still did that. Occasionally cutting in and out without warning. “I was attacked…” she inhaled, “by a biting villain. He attacked me by paralyzing me and tried to kill me.”

If the group wasn’t already shocked, they certainly were now.

“What?!” screamed Mina, Sero, and Kirishima all together. The class as a whole had degrees of visible shock and sadness on their faces . However, what no one saw was the silent horror that donned the faces of Ochako, Ojiro, Iida, and Shinsou.

Kyoka sighed, she had a feeling that the class would react that way. She hated that her friends felt bad because of her incident. She was still in pain, but she wasn’t that hurt, not nearly enough for everyone to be so scared.

Kyoka coughed and asked, “Can I sit down please?”

Immediately the group surrounding her dispersed and let her through with a few “sorry”s.

When she sat down on the couch, she sunk into it and allowed herself to relax. The warm feeling of the room washed over her and she sighed. Denki, never being too far behind, sat next to her, laying his head on her shoulder.

“And you weren’t attacked?” Iida asked Denki suddenly. Denki startled at the sudden question, thinking quickly over what he should say and how to leave vampires out of it.

“Uh- I- I was in the bathroom!” he blurted out. He put his hands over his face and groaned.

All Iida said in response was “oh.”

Kyoka giggled full heartedly, her boyfriend was never good at being put on the spot.

“He was taking his time when… he jumped me.” she finished for him.

Momo, in her usual elegant way, softly touched Kyoka’s shoulder in a soothing manner. However, she did not expect the response she got.

Kyoka screamed in a guttural, eerie tone. It was loud and clear and reached Denki’s ears as if a call for help.

Suddenly, Denki was up out of his seat and Momo was on the other side of the room, limp against the wall. In the moment, Denki didn’t see Momo, all he saw was the enemy who hurt his love . And he would do anything to keep her safe.  He was seeing red, his heartbeat drowning out the screams of the class, all except for Kyoka.

He was walking towards an unconscious Momo when he was grabbed by Iida. “ What are you doing?” Iida screamed as he gripped Denki’s arms. Denki felt himself get spun around to face Iida. He resisted and in his anger didn’t realize he bared his teeth until Iida looked at him with a shocked expression. He snapped back immediately. He felt sick. What is he going to do? His anxious thoughts were broken when he realized Kyoka was still sobbing. He quickly recoiled back from Iida and ran to Kyoka.

He shook her slightly, “It's okay Kyoka, it's okay! I’m here, he isn’t here.” he whispered to her. He took her head and tightly held it. “It’ll be okay.”

Soon, Kyoka calmed down but she never stopped trembling.

Eventually, Aizawa appeared in the commons. He looked around at what had happened and at an unconscious Momo and Kyoka and Denki holding onto each other for dear life.

“Ah, why didn’t Recovery Girl tell me Kyoka was coming…” he sighed. Shaking his head, he quickly pulled the couple away from the class.

“Why is Yaoyorozu unconscious, Denki?” he asked, already knowing who was to blame. Denki blanched and diverted his eyes.

“I- I… she was screaming and I thought he was here and Yaomomo was there and I wasn’t thinking. She’s mine and I needed to protect her and I… I’m so sorry.” Denki stuttered.

Aizawa sighed, but kept a straight face. Turning to Kyoka, he asked, “And you? Why did you scream?”

Kyoka was still shaking but attempted a deep breath. “I… she touched me in the same place he did and I was back there and I couldn’t move- I couldn’t breathe , everything was cold and I was gonna die again. I- I didn’t mean to scare Denki- I didn’t mean to… I didn't mean-”

Aizawa took her in his arms and slightly squeezed. Thankfully, Kyoka returned the embrace. “I was there again, I was back and I couldn’t do anything all over again …” she choked out in a sob.

Aizawa looked up at Denki, “I know you don’t think so, but it wasn’t your fault, Denki. Not the incident or what you did to Yaoyarozu. It’ll be okay, I promise.” he said softly at the broken vampire.

“But I wasn’t fast enough, Sensei! I could have- I could have helped, I could have hurt him before he hurt Kyoka!” Denki yelled back at him.

“Quiet!” Aizawa hushed him. “Some of your classmates could hear you!” he said. He raised an arm off of Kyoka’s back and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Denki, let me tell you something.” Aizawa said calmly. “You can’t blame yourself for things out of your control. It will kill you. It isn’t your fault because you weren’t there, it's the damn bastard who did this’s fault. Now, I’m going to excuse you both from hero training for a week. Instead, you will meet with Hound Dog and will find a therapist suitable for you.”

Denki’s eyes widened.  “But vampires-”

Aizawa shook his head. “Hound Dog knows about supernatural things, he is the grandson of a werewolf after all.”  Denki pouted.

Then, Kyoka raised her head. “Denki, i- it’s not your fault. Please, you saved me, don’t blame yourself!” she said.

“But Kyoka!”

“I… think therapy may be a good idea. We deserve it, Denki.” she said.

Denki sighed, “Alright.”

--

The next week passed slowly for the two. Hound Dog was kind but sharing emotions was draining regardless. They also began to share a room, staying together as much as possible. They began to fall into a routine. They’d wake up together, avoid their classmates, go to class, go to therapy, then go back to their room and cuddle and sleep. However this changed on Friday when both of them went to a new person, a licenced therapist by the name of Chie Honda.

Both were a bit apprehensive, but when Honda-sensei asked them to be truthful with their experience with the Supernatural, they relaxed a bit more.

At the end of the session, both Denki and Kyoka were exhausted, but relieved. They were scheduled for every other week for the foreseeable future.

Later, Aizawa brought them back to the school. When they made it back to the dorms, they tried to go to their rooms quietly but were stopped by Momo.

“I don’t know if you feel guilty, but I forgive you.” she said quietly to them. “I know you must be hurting.”

Kyoka, with tears in her eyes, hugged her friend tightly. “I’m so sorry.” she whispered.

“It was never your fault.”

--

Later that night, as the two of them were sitting on the floor and playing a game, Kyoka’s mind drifted. She thought about being held in place and being attacked. It still scared her, but she could now function with the memory. She also thought of Denki and how he was gentle when he healed her. Then she thought about Denki biting her and how it would be nice to feel that closeness again. It was a pleasant feeling, unlike the initial bite from her attacker. She threw her controller down and slapped her cheeks in embarrassment.

“What’s wrong, Kyoka?” Denki said, startled by her quick movement.

Kyoka didn’t know what to say. “I- I may have thought about you drinking my blood !” she blurted out without thinking. She turned a deeper pink and turned away.

“What?!” Denki shouted, blushing profusely as well.

“I thought… maybe it would help me forget the attack…” she said slowly. Denki stared at her with his mouth slightly agape. “Not like you have to, you know if you don’t want to!” she added.

“I never thought you’d ever want to!” he replied. Suddenly, his eyes went wide and he slapped his mouth. “I- I didn’t mean to say that!”

Both of them looked at each other for a moment.

“So we both want to?” Kyoka asked.

“I… think so?” Denki answered.

“Then we should, right?” she confirmed. Quickly, she added, “Wait, it’s not like a taboo is it?”

Denki startled, “What? No! It’s just really intimate and usually sexual.”

“I don’t want sex, though.” she added.

“Neither do I.” he agreed.

Denki sighed, “If we do this, I need to do it right… and that’s gonna take some explaining. Is that okay?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Okay,” he started, “so vampires started to stop treating humans as food about 500 years ago and when we did that, many vampires fell in love with humans. Unfortunately, many vampires still needed human blood as animal blood wasn’t as available, so many of their partners helped supply them with it. Because of this, we developed a spell-”

“Spell?” Kyoka interrupted.

“Yeah,” Denki said, rubbing the back of his head. “You know it’s not just vampires out there. Werewolves and witches and others exist too, but we all have magic, some more than others… Anyway, the spell was to bond the vampire to the human and transfer some energy to the human so that they would survive the harsh conditions. This spell was done by the vampire by drinking the blood and saying a chant in an elder language and would leave a mark upon the human to claim them as the vampire's ward. Essentially, that’s what we’d be doing, with all the things that come with it…” he said.

Kyoka took a deep breath. “So what would it do to me?” she asked.

“Well, you’d get stronger and see in the dark a little better, maybe your senses would heighten as well. And… you’d have a bite mark on your wrist.” Denki answered. “Is… is that still okay?”

Kyoka shook her head, “Of course! None of that is a bad thing!” she said.

Denki’s eyes widened, “I forgot about something! It- it will make us connected mentally too… like telepathically…” he added.

Kyoka smiled. “That’s awesome!” she said.

Denki's smile returned. “Okay then! We’ll do it!” he said.

“So, Kyoka, lay down on the bed on your back. I’m going to take your left wrist, okay?” he said, leading her to her bed. He was bouncing excitedly, but tried to act as gentlemanly as possible.

She layed down and took a deep breath. “I’m going to admit, this is a bit scary.” Kyoka said with a nervous laugh.

“To be honest, me too, but you still wanna do it, right?” Denki said.

“Yeah.”

“Me too.”

Then, Denki held her arm and kissed her wrist slightly. It sent tingles down Kyoka’s spine and relaxed her.

“Okay, here we go… I, Denki Kaminari, of the Kaminari clan vow to you, Kyoka Jirou, that I will hold you to the highest status and protect you with all of my might. As I take from you, you shall take from me my energy, my strength, my status, and my love. All these I give to you freely by my own will and by my own love. I do indeed vow this to you.” he said in a chant-like manner. Kyoka was startled at first but relaxed after she focused on the words.

“That's some pretty words there, magic man.” Kyoka said with a laugh.

“Kyoka,” he whispered with a breathy laugh, “I’m serious. That is the vernacular rite I was taught to say before I do it.”

“Okay, it’s okay. I’m ready.” she said. Her heart beated quickly and her stomach did flops as the prospect came closer and closer to reality.

Denki inhaled and then exhaled. “Okay, here we go. I love you.” he said.

He lifted Kyoka’s arm to his mouth and kissed it again. Then, in a quick motion, Kyoka watched Denki’s teeth extend into fangs and his eyes turn a ruby red. Kyoka found them beautiful, but she didn’t have time to meditate on them because as soon as she saw his eyes, he struck down into her wrist.

Kyoka gasped by instinct, but was surprised to feel no pain. It felt cool, but not cold, like ice water being dropped over her wrist. After a moment, Kyoka felt Denki relax and make a small noise, like she tasted delicious.

Then, in a flash, the cool feeling changed. It started with her wrist, a warm feeling, like the pleasant burn of alcohol from a first drink. It was intoxicating as it slowly creeped up and down her body. Once it spread completely, the feeling changed again. It felt like a hug from Denki. She felt the love he held for her and she hoped he felt the same way. It was a peaceful feeling, so peaceful that Kyoka didn’t notice the small sigh that escaped her lips. The feeling stuck to her for but a moment more and then she felt his touch release.

Suddenly, Kyoka felt cold, like a blanket was ripped from her on a windy night. She whimpered slightly, missing the pleasant feeling.

Denki giggled as he stared at her, his eyes still red and his mouth still a bit bloody. “It's okay, just let me say the words in the elder language. I’ve heard that the time in between isn’t very comfortable for the human.” he comforted.

“Then do it already!” Kyoka whined.

“Alright! Hold on!” Denki said. Then he began to speak in a language that Kyoka could barely process, let alone understand.

As he said the words, Kyoka felt the warmth of the connection return with full force. Then, she felt a presence fill her head, like a fog of thought in her forehead. It told her that Denki was happy and that he was full. It made her happy.

“... Ashket mensu natum. Alom.” Denki finished and the last of the connection was made.

Kyoka quickly sat up and kissed him. “That was awesome! It feels like you are hugging me, even when you aren’t!” she said.

“I feel it too!” Denki agreed. “This might sound weird, but you tasted really good…” he added a bit sheepishly.

Kyoka suddenly felt embarrassed, as if a piece of her was revealed. “I- I’m glad!”

Suddenly, Denki tackled her into laying back down on the bed. “I really really love you!” he said into her ear.

Suddenly, Kyoka felt dizzy at the amount of love that she felt. “Whoa, Denki! That's… a lot of emotion, and I’m not sure I can get used to that.” she told him. Denki just giggled at her.

She startled herself by an unprepared yawn. “I think I’m gonna sleep now. Goodnight, Denki.” she whispered.

“Okay, goodnight.” Denki whispered.

--

In the morning, the world seemed different to Kyoka. The world was brighter, sounds were louder, and she felt an overwhelming amount of love coming from Denki.

She laughed, “Okay, you dumbass, I get it. I love you too.”

Denki giggled in return. For a moment he stared off, thinking about something. “Hey, you wanna go get breakfast downstairs and then go for a run? We don’t have class today after all.” he asked.

“Yes!” she shouted. She jumped, shocking herself by her loudness.

“Ouch, Kyoka, vampire senses, remember?” Denki said.

“I… get what you mean now.” she said. “Ow.”

--

When the two made it to the commons, Kirishima, Sato, and Midoriya were there eating a variety of breakfasts.

Denki, before Kyoka got the chance to refuse, asked what she wanted for breakfast.

“I just want some fruit. Thanks, Denki!” she said as she sat down on a couch in the commons next to Kirishima.

Soon Denki came back with an apple and a bowl of cereal. “There, is this okay?” Denki asked.

Kyoka smiled and nodded. She took the apple and bit into it. It reminded her of the night before and her happiness slipped through the link.

“You know I love you too, dumbass. ” Denki teased.

“Oh, quit it, I didn’t mean for that to happen.” she said.

They both fell into a laughing fit. It felt good to laugh with each other, they felt whole.

Unfortunately, they were brought out of it by the stares of the others around them.

Kyoka blushed, “Sorry, I forgot we were talking in front of people.” she said.

Kirishima cocked his head. “You weren’t talking though… you just looked at each other and burst into laughter.” he said, confused.

The pair’s eyes widened. “Oh yeah, I meant to say looking… looking in front of people.” Kyoka amended and laughed awkwardly.

They both stood up and ran from the room, leaving their food behind.

--

They retreated to the yard in front of Heights Alliance.

“What's going on, Denki?” Kyoka said, checking that words left her lips.

“I think we accidentally used telepathy.” he said, still a bit stunned.

“I mean, cool, but also, we can’t do that in public!” she said.

“Yeah, no.” Denki agreed. They both stared at each other in slight amazement of the feat they just accomplished.

“Can we still go on that run though? I did just drink human blood and I’m about to bounce off some walls.” he asked.

“Yeah, I wanna see how fast I can go now too.” she said.

When the two returned it was almost mid day. They both managed to run for a long time with their newfound energy. During the time, they talked via telepathy so as to not waste breath. It was odd at first, but both found themselves getting used to it.

Both were panting when they reentered the dorm, completely exhausted but smiling brightly.

The common room was now filled with the pair's classmates. The two looked at each other before sitting down next to each other on the couch. Denki wrapped his arm around Kyoka.

Mina, who was sitting across from them, whistled. “Wow, Kyoka. I never knew you actually enjoyed affection.” she teased.

Kyoka blushed and stuck out her tongue. “At least I have a boyfriend.” she teased back.

Mina pouted in faux shock. “How dare you!” she said. They both laughed.

“Well it's good that you both are doing better. You were both pretty scary when that mess happened on monday.” Mina said, her tone sobering from its usual levity.

“We’ve been through a lot, but we’ll be okay.” Denki said.

“Yeah, we’ll be fine.” Kyoka agreed.
