Work Text:

Nancy absolutely adores her girlfriend. Not a day goes by where she doesn’t unconditionally love Marjan and even though she knew going into their relationship that Marjan was a daredevil, she just wished it didn’t happen so damn often.

They were all gathered in the kitchen sharing their weekend plans and of course TK was talking about how he was so excited him and Carlos had both days off.

Nancy and Marjan were also really excited and planned a small trip to the mountains after knowing how much they both loved snow, so they rented a little cabin for two days.

Nancy was even more excited to surprise Marjan with an event she found where you could meet trained wolves after also finding out wolves were Marjans favorite animals since she finds them adorable.

As Judd was telling the group about how he was just going to stay in with Grace and their baby girl Faith, the bell went off requesting both fire and EMS for a car crash.

When they got to the scene they realized how chaotic it was. There was a silver car wedged in between two buildings after getting hit by a drunk driver. The left backside of the car had been hit which then led the car to spin and slide into the two buildings.

The team got to work and were able to retrieve the driver safely out by using the jaws of life since the left frontside was crushed from the building. The driver was conscious and sobbing when they realized there was a small child in the right backseat of the car.

She looked around 5-6 years old and was unconscious most likely from all the spinning and maybe hitting her head.

While Tommy and TK worked on the driver who wasn’t too injured except for some cuts from the broken glass and a few bruises, Nancy watched as Marjan was squeezing into the drivers seat to retrieve the child who she later learned was named Emma.

Marjans gear was preventing her from fitting inside and there was no way to go on the other side of the car considering it was against a wall. Without a second thought Marjan threw off her gear which led her to squeeze into the space. Nancys heart tightened like never before.

Marjan was now in the drivers seat trying to report any immediate injures she noticed which were mostly a few cuts and probably a minor concussion.

Emma began to stir awake, still strapped into her car seat.

“Hi,” Marjan said softly while figuring out how she was going to get her out of the car seat and into the drivers seat so they both could get out.

“Hi, I’m Emma.” she said, clearly scared and confused.

“Hey Emma, I’m Marj-AHH,” she screamed as the dashboard she was resting her left forearm on sparked from some exposed wires forming a harsh burn.

They all heard Marjan. Nancys heart stopped. ‘She’s hurt. Oh my god. I need to get in there’ She thought, but she was completely frozen.

“Marwanni, do you copy?” She heard Captain Strand say into his radio.

‘Please be okay. Please be okay.’

“I’m alright Cap.” Marjan groaned into her radio.

Nancy let out a breath she didn’t even realize she was holding. TK was right next to her running his hand up and down her back for support. Everyone always loved when he did that in times of need since it was so comforting.

Marjan was able to not think about her arm for the moment and get Emma out of the car. She managed to also get a bit cut up on her hands from the glass as well as a shard cutting her right shoulder through her shirt but not getting too deep.

Tommy and TK quickly took Emma from Marjan leaving Nancy to assess her girlfriend.

“Babe, are you okay?” Nancy asked nearly on the verge of a panic attack.

“I’m fine Nance, I swear.” Marjan felt bad for how worried she made her and Nancy was quickly stopping the slight bleeding from Marjans shoulder.

Emma, Emma’s mother, and Marjan were all stable enough to be transported. Emma and her mom would have to spend the night at the hospital but Marjan just needed to get patched up.

Another ambulance had already arrived to transport Emma and her mom leaving Marjan to be in their ambulance. Tommy sat in the passenger seat while TK drove so Nancy could be in the back working on her.

Nancy was working on the burn which just from looking at could tell must have felt really painful.

She was crouching in front of where Marjan sat while biting her lip to concentrate on tending Marjans wounds, trying her best not to let her emotions get in the way of her skills. Marjan always loved how adorable Nancy looked while focusing.

However, Marjan quickly noticed that look in Nancys eyes.

Nancy had developed a look after Tim died.

It was almost like Carlos’ cow eyes except it was only pure concern and almost fear.

She had it when she found out about Grace and Judds accident, when TK passed out at the station on his first day back from his concussion, when Marjan had shown up crying and shaking at Nancys house after finding McKenna, learning about the fire at TK and Carlos’ place, and right now.

Once Marjan realized, she tilted Nancys head up from her chin and cupped her face.

“What’s wrong?” Marjan said. She already knew what was wrong but she didn’t know what else to say.

Nancy paused for a few minutes leaning into Marjans touch.

“You really scared me.” She paused again before looking back down, this time at the floor.

“You can’t keep putting yourself in dangerous situations without thinking Marj. You have someone to come home to now and I can’t- I can’t lose someone again. I can’t lose you.” She looked up with tears in her eyes.

Marjan started tearing up too. She did have someone now. Someone who she absolutely loved. She could only imagine how scared Nancy was when they heard her scream.

“Babe… I am so so sorry.” Marjan said wiping the tears from Nancys cheek. She felt awful.

Nancy opened her mouth to speak but realized they had pulled into the hospital.

Nancy insisted that she would go in with Marjan after getting the okay from Tommy since they only had an hour left on their shift.

“Alright, but we’re continuing this talk at home.” Marjan said while hopping out of the ambulance and giving Nancy a small smile and a quick kiss that Nancy returned.

All went well and Nancy couldn’t take her eyes off Marjan, worried that she was more hurt then she appeared to be even though she was constantly getting reassured she would be okay.

They walked into their apartment and carefully put their stuff away before quickly changing into something more comfortable which for Nancy were sweatpants and Marjans old Miami FD shirt, and for Marjan were shorts and Nancys EMS hoodie.

They settled on the couch facing each other, being careful to avoid Marjans burn from having any pressure put on it.

“Can I go first?” Nancy asked. She began once Marjan nodded in response.

“After Tim passed, you know how hurt I was.” She carefully started, “I’m sure you’ve noticed anytime anyone is put in danger I get really, really scared.” She took a breath before continuing.

Marjan carefully grabbed her hand to show her she was there and could tell her anything.

“Tim was my best friend. I felt like I could tell him anything. He was the first person I came out, he helped me realize how much I was crushing on you, and I miss him every day.” She held Marjans hand with both her hands and took them up to her chest.

“Seeing you take off your gear and hearing you scream reminded me of how I felt when I realized I lost him.” Nancy said now crying.

“I understand that dangers come with your job, and I’m so proud of you for saving that little girl, but all I’m asking is that you at least try to be a little more careful.” She said softly, not trying to offend Marjan.

“Babe,” Marjan started, cupping Nancys cheek. “I completely understand and I really am sorry for making you so scared. I promise you I’ll try my best to be more careful.” She gave a kiss to Nancys forehead before continuing.

“Me wanting to be the best at what I do is only part of why I jump into dangerous situations.” Marjan took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment. “When I first started as a firefighter in Miami I was at a station that was completely by the book only. No exceptions.” She opened her eyes again to see Nancy looking at her, giving Marj her full attention.

“We got this call one day of a crash on the side of the road. It seemed like just one car until I noticed there was some yellow paint on the bumper. I told my captain at the time who just said it was nothing and to focus on the car that was there. So I did.” Tears started forming now in Marjans eyes.

“Once we were finished, one of the other firefighters and I followed where we saw some different flowers in the forest, we were next to which led up to a lake where we saw a yellow flower truck underwater. We retrieved a man and a little boy no older than 10 and we were too late.” Marjan said wiping her tears, “I’m sorry, I’ve never told anyone that story before.”

Nancy could tell Marjan was haunted with guilt. “From then on, I promised myself I would always trust my gut. By any means necessary.”

Nancy was quiet for a few moments carefully holding Marjan in her arms.

“I’m so sorry that happened babe.” She said stroking Marjans back. “Thank you for trusting me enough to tell me that.”

Marjan nuzzled her head into Nancys neck. “Back then I didn’t really have to worry about getting hurt. I was hiding part of my identity, I didn’t really know if I was happy, and I just felt so guilty. I still visit that little boy, Sam and his father Jefferys grave every time I’m in Miami.”

She rested her head on Nancys shoulder. “Now I have you and I couldn’t be happier. You accepted me for who I was and you helped me through so much and now, we have our home together. I wanna make sure I always come back to it. I love you so much.”

Nancy never felt so loved before. She shed a tear remembering TKs advice when trying to convince her to ask Marjan out, “You always talk about how you want to be happy with someone. You clearly like Marj. It’s not gonna happen unless you take the leap.”

It was the best decision she’s ever made.
