Work Text:
Xander didn’t expect to meet his significant other in the school library, of all places.
Of course, Xander didn’t seem like the type of person to spend their morning at the library. Xander could be described as “loud” and “reckless”, and those words and “libraries” did not fit together.
David, on the other hand, would most definitely love being in a library. There, he wouldn’t be distracted by people trying to converse with him.
“Xander!” called a familiar voice. Xander turned around in his chair to spot David heading towards him, bag slung over one shoulder, a cup of coffee in his hand.
“David!!” Xander chirped, barely restraining himself from shouting at the top of his lungs. “Wow, I didn’t expect you to be here! Come, sit down!” Xander hastily began clearing papers off of the table he was at.
“And I didn’t expect to see you at the library!” David chuckled, dropping his bag on the floor and settling himself in a nearby chair. “You? At the library? The world isn’t ending, is it?”
“Hey, don’t be so dramatic! Sometimes even I need peace and quiet, you know!” Xander leaned across the table, kissing David’s cheek and making him blush.
“Hey now, we’re in a public area.” David laughed, jokingly trying to push Xander’s face away.
“Screw the public, I’ll do whatever I want!” Xander huffed, making David laugh again.
“Oh, I nearly forgot,” David reached into his bag, pulling out his schedule. “I wanted to see if we had time today so we could go somewhere.”
“We’re going somewhere? Like a date?” Xander inquired.
“Well, kind of-”
“You’re taking me on a date? And I thought I was the bolder one!” Xander’s face was practically glowing.
“Eh- enough of that!” David stuttered, his face turning red. “A-anyways, give me your schedule so I can compare them and figure out a good time!”
As David scans both schedules, his mind starts to wander. Where should we go? The park? A restaurant? A museum? ...Should we just use our free time to cuddle in the dorms? Out of the corner of his eye, he catches a glance of his cup of coffee.
“A coffee shop! That’s perfect!” he declares, using a pen to write down an address. Xander peeked over his shoulder.
“Coffee shop? What are you writing down?”
“Meet me in front of this shop for our… date. Does 4:30 sound good?”
“You’re drinking coffee right now, and we’re going to a coffee shop for a date. Any more coffee and you’re going to end up like Charles!” Xander joked.
David tried to cover his laugh with a cough, but failed. “To be fair, I have been staying up late to study for a test,” he admitted.
“A test?” Xander repeated, suddenly alert. “Are you losing sleep over this? Are you stressed? I swear, I’ll beat up whichever teacher that assigned that test...”
“Please don’t beat up a teacher,” David sighed. “I’m not particularly stressed... I guess I’m just worried that I won’t do good.”
“Nooo, David, don’t be worried! You’ll do great, ‘cause you’re very smart and pretty!” Xander blurted out. “Not that being pretty has anything to do with a test. Wait, no- not that the fact that you’re pretty isn’t relevant either!!”
“Wha..? X-Xander, now you’re making me blush...” David groaned, hiding his face in his hands.
“Hehe, I’m glad I was able to cheer you up. I’m going to class now, you should too! Oh, and you look cute when you’re blushing.”
“Xander!-” David yelped as his boyfriend got up, placed a kiss on his cheek, grabbed his stuff and left.
This should be it, right? Xander pulled his phone out of his pocket to check the time. It was 4:27. David should be here already. He’s not the type of person to be late to… well, anything. Xander glanced at the outside of the shop again, double-checking that it was the right place. I hope I’m not remembering something wrong, oh god that’d be really embarrassing-
“Xander!” For the second time that day, Xander heard someone yelling his name. He glanced around and spotted a familiar hand waving at him from across the street in a crowd of people. Xander let out a sigh of relief, putting his phone back in his pocket.
“Xander! Sorry, am I late?” David bounded up to Xander a few seconds later, checking his watch. “4:29, I just barely made it! Did I keep you waiting?”
“Of course not~” Xander swept his boyfriend into a hug, kissing his cheek. He neglected to mention how he had gotten here early and had been waiting for about 20 minutes.
“Thank goodness I wasn’t late,” David said. “I think I should tell you, the reason I was late is because I stopped to get you this.” Quietly, he brought his hand out from behind his back and handed a small bouquet of red roses to Xander.
“Eh… David, this is..?” Xander felt his face heating up.
“Um, I saw these at the flower shop, and they kinda reminded me of you. I, uh, I mean they match your hair, that’s all.” David admitted. Well, he was sort of hiding the truth; for a good reason! If he told Xander, it would probably ruin the mood.
“W-well, should we go inside now?” David asked.
“Oh, yes… inside the shop… let’s go.” The two boys headed into the coffee shop, both of them blushing awkwardly.
The truth was, David was only walking by the flower shop when a familiar voice stopped him.
“Heyyyy, Starboy! Fancy meeting you here! I could recognize that ahoge from miles away!”
“Hello, Whit.” David said patiently as Whit strode outside the shop to talk to him. “What are you doing here?”
“Oh, me? I’m just buying a gift for Ch- a friend. Speaking of gifts...” Whit leaned closer, lowering his voice to a whisper. “I heard you were going on a date with Xander.”
Whit then proceeded to laugh his head off as David turned a startling shade of red.
“Haha… Okay, okay. I shouldn’t have laughed that hard, since I’m the expert~”
“Expert? Since when were you an expert on anything?” David retorted.
Whit stared at him. “I’m an expert at matchmaking, of course! Hey, tell you what. I’ll give you free advice for your date, 100% off!”
Advice? From Whit Young? That can’t be good. “...Okay, sure.” David sighed.
“I think you should bring Xander a gift. Hmm… I think flowers would suffice?”
Flowers? A gift? David thought.
Actually, that’s not that bad of an idea...
Xander and David settled down at a table with their drinks. The café was very lively, as this time of day is when most people can catch a breath and relax. The two lovebirds, of course, pay no heed to the background noise.
“So Xander, did you happen to do any… activist work lately?” David asked, sipping his drink.
“Oh, yeah! Of course! The media isn’t too happy about it, though. They’re calling me a ‘rebel’ and all that stuff...” Xander grumbled.
“A rebel, huh? Maybe you really should consider changing your hairstyle...”
They break off into lighthearted conversation, joking around with each other. As they continue talking, they feel comfortable with each other, they feel that this; this leisurely time spent with each other was more than enough for either of them. And Xander wishes that perhaps this peaceful time could last forever, or just a little longer.
Something flashes through Xander’s mind, something he forgot to mention.
“Oh yeah, David, have you ever heard about ‘Danganronpa’?”
