Rantaro laughs. “You think so?” He watches as Maki methodically sections off a corner of her waffle, dipping it twice in maple syrup and hunching forward to get it into her mouth. Her eyes almost seem to sparkle a little as she does. Rantaro looks away so he won’t smile too widely. “I’d gotten the opposite impression, actually.”
As kind as Korekiyo is, Rantaro can tell that even they have been taken aback by his observation, an eyebrow raising. After a pause, they say, “I am given to understand that she underwent a sort of… character arc, during her time in the simulation, but she has never had anything kind to say to me.”
Privately, Rantaro thinks that might be more to do with Korekiyo and what they did in the game than Maki herself, but on the other hand, Rantaro does really like Korekiyo. It might be worth letting Maki know that they’re not as bad as she might think.
…Maybe Rantaro should take this one step at a time.
