Work Text:
“Just to clarify; this is just standard testing for any heart related issues to your fainting.” Historia tried to reassure the raven-haired patient, “I still think it was probably hypoglycemia or stress. Possibly the two combined.”
“I know.” Mikasa said before hopping on the treadmill, “it’s just that… I kind of wish it wasn’t that. You know, ‘girl’ athlete doing a ‘guy’ sport then fainting in the first hour of training.” She mimicked quotation marks with her hands, “It’s not exactly a great day for feminists.”
“Running track isn’t a guy sport, as far as I remember. Besides, we get male athletes tested for the same all the time.”
“That’s good to hear.” Mikasa nodded curtly as she steadily started increasing her pace accordingly.
Historia smiled politely before excusing herself to tend to her other patients. She came back twenty minutes later to check on the athlete.
“How’re you doing?”
Mikasa was drenched in her sweat, making the grey tank top hugging her frame tightly grow darker in color. Her skin glistened under the artificial light, and Historia couldn’t help it when her gaze followed the way Mikasa’s slender fingers swiped her bangs away from her eyes.
She recoiled back in shock at her own straying thoughts. She instantly dropped her gaze back to the chart she was now clutching tightly.
It was so unprofessional of her, looking at her own patient that way. If any of her colleagues knew of this, they would never let her live it down.
“I’m fine.” Mikasa said out of the blue, breathless still.
“Mm?”
“You asked how I was doing and… I’m fine.” Her attempt at a shrug fell flat but she played it coolly, “Can this thing go any faster?”
“Don’t get all alpha male on me.” Historia smirked, “the stress test is supposed to be hard.”
“I’m a track runner so, I’ve definitely trained with a more punishing pace.” Mikasa said stubbornly, a ghost of a smile playing on her lips. Historia shook her head in amused disbelief. She was definitely charmed.
“Alright, alright.” She tucked a straying lock behind her ear as she went over her test results. Negative. Her hunch was right. If her stress test is normal, they’ll be discharging her today.
Mikasa won’t be her patient in a couple of hours. Historia tried not to think about what that meant for them.
She startled out of her short-lived congratulatory moment when the sound of the heart monitor started beeping gradually. She swiftly moved to Mikasa’s side, scanning over her vitals. Her blood pressure was within normal limits and her EKG was without any abnormalities. But her heartbeat had jumped in the last thirty seconds.
“Mikasa, I’m afraid we’re going to keep you in for a while longer.”
“OK.”
When she looked up, Mikasa seemed flustered, looking anywhere but at her. Historia didn't dwell much on it, concerned still for the woman’s health. She hated when her instincts failed her but figuring out what was wrong was her top priority right now.
