Chapter Text

“I didn’t like him. And all those texts were family-friendly.”

Kurt didn’t know which statement to tear apart first. ‘I didn’t like him.’ When Blaine had said that, Kurt was forced to fight back the laugh that was threatening to escape. Sure, maybe Blaine and Sebastian weren’t besties, but Blaine definitely liked the Warbler. Or at least, he liked what Sebastian did. He liked the compliments and the dancing and the drinking and the feeling of being grown up. He and Kurt were teenagers when they were together, but when Blaine was with Sebastian, he felt like a college student- careless and free. So, as much of a jerk as Sebastian was, there was no way in hell that Blaine didn’t like him. Kurt also found Blaine’s use of past tense humorous since he knew for a fact Blaine was texting him in Glee just a few days before.

Then, there was Blaine’s absurd claim that the texts were ‘family-friendly.’ Kurt may have only met Sebastian on a handful of occasions, but he knew that the meerkat probably didn’t even know the definition of ‘family-friendly.’ Kurt may struggle when it came to taking a hint or seeing something that was right in front of him, but Sebastian had outright said that he wanted Blaine. And not to mention the obvious flirting- Kurt saw the way that Blaine ducked his head and blushed, there was no way Blaine didn’t detect the flirtatious comments. So why was it okay for Blaine to keep Sebastian around, who was obviously somewhat harmful to their relationship, but Kurt couldn’t talk to someone who coughed up a few cheesy pick-up lines every now and then?

Kurt loved Blaine with his entire heart, but he hated the double standards that came with the relationship. And he couldn’t stand when Blaine was unreasonable, refusing to hear other people out, insisting he was right. Kurt was done with it- he wanted to see how far he could go, how much Blaine would take before snapping.

Kurt had always given into Blaine, and in turn, he had silenced his own voice.

He was done.

“Right,” he said, narrowing his eyes.

Blaine tilted his head to the side, almost amused. “Really? You’re going to be sarcastic right now. You’re cheating on me.”

“If this,” Kurt tried to grab his phone but Blaine continued to hold it out of his reach, “is cheating, then I don’t even know what to call whatever is going on between you and Sebastian.”

“It’s called being friends,” Blaine said.

Kurt shook his head. “No, don’t act oblivious. He openly flirts with you, insults me, and told me that he wants you.”

“But I don’t like him like that.”

“And I don’t like Chandler like that.”

“No, but,” Blaine aggressively tapped on the phone screen, “this is cheating! Look at these… they’re so sexual!”

Kurt couldn’t hold back his scoff. ‘Are you an astronaut? Because your smile is out of this world,’ was sexual?! “Right, and everything between you and Sebastian was ‘family-friendly.’”

Blaine nodded his head smugly.

“Prove it.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Show me your texts with Sebastian. It’s only fair since you read all of mine.”

Blaine’s facial expression told Kurt all he needed to know. He was onto something, and he needed to keep pushing.

“Come on, Blaine. Show me. Hey, who knows, maybe by reading them I can learn what ‘family friendly’ texts really look like and admit I was wrong.”

“Don’t change the subject. This is about you and-and Chandler,” Blaine spat.

“And we can get back to that once you show you’re not cheating.”

“What about my privacy?”

“I think both of our privacy went out the window 5 minutes ago.”

Blaine sighed and hesitantly handed his phone over to Kurt. “Just… we’ll always love each other, right?”

“Of course,” Kurt said. He unlocked the phone- the code was his birthday- and opened Sebastian’s contact. He hesitated- did he really want to invade his boyfriend’s privacy like this? Yes, Blaine had snooped through his phone, but only because Kurt’s phone was continuously going off. Blaine had given Kurt permission to go through his phone, though it was reluctantly. Blaine could have stormed out, or refused to give Kurt access to the device, but he didn’t. Part of him wanted Kurt to see this- see how guilty he was.

So who was Kurt to deny him that pleasure?

Kurt opened the messages, expecting to find some flirtatious and suggestive messages, insults aimed at him, or even some texts that criticised Blaine. No.

What he found was much worse.

He only saw a handful of texts, but it was more than enough for him to notice a pattern. “We’re over,” he said and tossed the phone back to Blaine.

“What?” Blaine said. “What do you mean?”

“You and me. We’re done. No longer together.”

“But…” Blaine looked around the room, trying to find something that would work in his favour. He picked up their prom photo that Kurt had displayed in a beautiful picture frame. “We can’t be over. We’re Klaine, we’re soulmates…”

Kurt closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “If we’re soulmates, shouldn’t I be enough for you?”

“You are.”

“Then why…” Kurt gestured to Blaine’s phone, which was now being held aggressively by Blaine.

“I don’t know.” Blaine shook his head helplessly.

“You should leave, and I don’t want to see you for a while. We can still be friends, but I just can’t even look at you right now.”

Blaine opened his mouth as if he was going to say something- something that was probably about Chandler- but then he thought better of it and just left the room.

Kurt had been sitting on his bed for all of 10 minutes before deciding that he was wasting his time doing nothing. He wasn’t sad, or angry, or confused. He was just empty inside.

Kurt went downstairs and grabbed his car keys from the counter.

“Where are you goin’?” his dad called from the living room.

Kurt, one hand on the door handle, said, “I’m going for a drive.”

“Blaine jus’ left here lookin’ like a kicked puppy. What happened?”

“We, uh, kind of broke up.”

“Oh.” A pause. “Do you wanna talk about it?”

“No. Not yet.” Kurt opened the door and left the house before his dad could say anything else. He didn’t want to talk- he didn’t want to do anything, really. He was still coming to terms with the breakup, and it hadn’t really hit him yet. Who knows, maybe the next day Blaine would give him a real apology- one that didn’t somehow shift part of the blame onto Kurt- and they would get back together.

Kurt wasn’t aware of where he was going. He didn’t know where he wanted to go; there was no one he needed or wanted to see. He assumed that he would just drive around town for a little while, but soon he realised that he was driving a familiar route.

He was going to Dalton.

Part of Kurt didn’t want to go. It wasn’t an issue of time; it was only 5 P.M., so he would be able to drive there and back before his 11 P.M. curfew. He didn’t really want to go because he knew who was there- Sebastian. But Sebastian was also why the other part of Kurt wanted to go.

Kurt wanted an explanation, but he knew he wouldn’t want to hear it.

He went to Dalton nonetheless.

Warbler practice had been over for ages by the time Kurt was inside the building. He had broken in the same way he had about a year prior, and was now roaming the empty hallway. There were dorm rooms surrounding him, but he had no idea which one was Sebastian’s. It wasn’t as if he could just knock and ask, either. He couldn’t risk running into some nerd who would hand him right over to the headmaster. He needed to be smart.

He needed to find a Warbler- someone he could trust and would understand his situation. He would only need to mention Blaine’s name and they would hang onto his every word.

Or maybe he just needed a friend.

Thank God Blaine had made Kurt stay in touch with Jeff and Nick. He took his phone out of his pocket and texted Nick.

Kurt: At Dalton. Where’s Sebastian’s room?

Nick replied almost instantly, giving Kurt the room number. He had to go up another flight of stairs and down 2 hallways until he was standing outside of Sebastian’s door. All he had to do was knock, and he’d have all the answers he wanted. Or didn’t want.

He slowly lifted his hand up, intending to knock, but the door opened.

“Kurt,” Sebastian said. He was standing on the other side of the door, looking somewhat afraid of Kurt. “I-I was just about to go out, what are you doing here?”

Kurt tried to stop his hands from shaking, but Sebastian’s presence had always had that affect on him. “I’m here to see you.”

“Really? I don’t recall nearly blinding anyone recently.” Sebastian chuckled, but Kurt could see the guilt in his eyes.

“Oh, no, it’s not that. Can I come in?”

Sebastian hesitated slightly, most likely to remind Kurt of his plans to go out, but he moved out of the doorway and let Kurt inside. They sat on the end of his bed.

“So…” Sebastian muttered. “Why do you need to talk to me?”

“Blaine and I were arguing,” Kurt explained, “and long story short, it ended with me reading some texts between you guys.” It hurt to say aloud; it was as if it made it real. Kurt couldn’t deny it any longer.

Sebastian shifted uncomfortably. “Look, I didn’t-”

“I’m not here to yell at you. I’m just wondering why… in the texts I saw, Blaine was always flirting with you. You never really reciprocated. The most you did was agree to the coffee dates. Why?”

Sebastian stared at his feet and shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Sebastian, whatever your reason is, I won’t tell anyone. I just want closure.”

Sebastian took a deep breath before saying, “I’ve always wanted to be one of those guys that could sleep with other people’s boyfriend’s and not care. But for some stupid reason, I was born with this thing called a conscience, and I’m not down with it. Even though I told Blaine many times I was. I only really did it when you were there cause it was sort of fun to rile you up.”

Kurt smiled a little. “So… why did you continue to go after him? Or not tell him to leave you alone.”

“I figured that if I made enough advances, you guys would break up and I could be with him guilt-free.”

“Well, your wish came true. We broke up.”

Sebastian looked Kurt in the eye and bit his lip. “Not as guilt-free as I was hoping. Seeing you has kinda shown me how this all really is…”

“What do you mean?”

“The consequences! How other people feel. All that crap. You literally drove all the way here just to understand what your ex was doing with me. I can’t exactly be with him without thinking of that now.”

“I’m sorry...”

Sebastian sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. “It’s fine, I just… he’s just not worth it anymore.”

“No, he isn’t,” Kurt agreed. Maybe admitting that was his first step to getting over Blaine. Their relationship really wasn’t worth all the pain that came along with it.

“Well, I guess there’s no reason for us to hate each other anymore.”

“I never hated you,” Kurt said. “I just… strongly disliked you.”

Sebastian smirked. “Still,” he held his hand out to Kurt, “truce?”

Kurt shook it firmly and smiled at Sebastian. “Truce.”
