Chapter Text
My Name is Frost Davids Marianne. I am a 29-year-old female, have dusty blue hair (yes I dye it), work as a chemical engineer and have degrees in both bio and explosive chemistry. I lived in Sydney, New South Wales Australia, right next to the famous Bondi Beach.
I'm also terribly afraid of water.
Well, mainly being in the water, and thinking about it. Also, it’s only really large bodies of it. Think of Finn’s Thalassophobia from Adventure Time and you have the right idea.
On that note, you must be wondering this:
“Hey, Frost, if you’re so scared of the water, why are you currently sitting inside a barrel floating in an ocean of the stuff?”
Well, let me tell you,
Would you believe me if I told you that it was in order to save another world?

CHAPTER 1:
Water Girls and Rubber Boys! The Friendship of Two Captains is Forged!
I slowly blinked, the darkness around me no brighter than that behind my eyelids. The texture of wood around me threw me off a little bit, along with the cramped space I was stuffed into. Where the heck was I?
My question was answered untimely by a heavy bump that threw whatever I was in on its side and caused my body weight to pop open the lid, which allowed me the freedom to rub my bruised head.
Looking up to check my surroundings, a few things caught my attention immediately.
Man his hair is pink.
Oh hey, a straw hat.
Guess this is a pantry.
Man, he’s eating a lot of apples.
When my brain caught up and I realised that the two other people in the vicinity were staring at me, I crawled the rest of the way out of the barrel (apparently), stood up, coughed awkwardly.
“Sup,” I finger gunned, attempting to regain some of my lost swagger.
Both boys continued to stare at me, the straw-hatted one still eating from the crate of apples he was pilfering.
No, wait, hang on a second. The gears in my brain began turning a little faster when I realised something. That boy is Luffy. Which can only mean...
.
.
.
SHIT! I LEFT EARLY! Goddammit drunk me! We weren’t ready yet! Why did that asshole let me go through with this?!
No,
Wait,
It’s coming back to me.
He was drunk too.
...
Fuck.
I was drawn out of my internal ranting when Luffy spoke.
“Swups.” He replied, not even pausing to swallow.
We stared at each other for a little while longer before I decided to break the silence. “...So who are you guys?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“I'm Monkey D. Luffy!” Luffy answered, finally swallowing and reminding me that I had to introduce my last name first. “I'm going to be King of the Pirates!”
“Oh, well I'm Marianne Davids Frost, I'm going to save the world. Want to be friends?” Oh god, I’ve really gotten old if I’ve forgotten how to speak to teens.
“Sure!” Luffy beamed.
Oh, well that was easy.
I turned to Koby, who was freaking out royally. “Oh, sorry, I didn’t get your name.”
“Y-y-you guys are crazy!” He screamed at Luffy and me.
I furrowed my brow. “Well, that’s just a really weird name.”
Luffy laughed, slapping his knee. “Yeah! I thought your name was Koby!”
“It is Koby!” Koby cried indignantly, “b-b-but becoming King of the Pirates?! Saving the world?! A-a-are you guys serious?!”
“Yep.” We both answered.
“What about your crews?!”
“Hm,” I adopted a thinking posed. “Luffy, do you want to join my crew?”
“No way! I need to be the captain to be King of the pirates.” He stated as if it was obvious. “Want to join my crew?”
“Hmm, no thanks.” I looked back at Koby. “Well, I guess I don’t have one.”
“Me neither!” Luffy grinned proudly.
Koby’s face froze in sheer shock and terror. Luffy leaned over to wave his hand in front of the stock-still cabin boy.
“HOW DO YOU EVEN SAVE THE WORLD?!” he shouted, shooting to his feet.
“Dunno thought I’d figure it out as I’d go.” I shrugged, folding my arms. That wasn’t really a lie, I haven’t exactly figured out what I'm meant to fix yet. The asshole wasn’t too clear on that either.
“A-a-and K-K-King of the Pirates is the title given to the person...” Koby swallowed, “...who obtains everything in this world! That means seeking the great reassure of wealth, power and fame! The One Piece!”
“Yep!” Luffy grinned.
“Yup?! Pirates all over the world are after that treasure!” Koby cried.
“So am I.” Luffy stated.
“If you’re hunting for the One piece,” I interjected, “that means you’re going to be travelling all over the world, right?”
“That makes sense!” Luffy nodded.
‘I was asking you the question…’ I sweatdropped but still continued. “Well do you mind if I come with you? I’m sure I’ll figure out how to save the world if we’re going to the One Piece!”
“Okay, sure!”
“No way!” Koby interrupted. “No way, No way! There’s absolutely no way!” he shouted at us. “There’s no way that any of that is possible! No way, no way no way!”
*KLONK!*
Both Luffy and I thumped his head, sending him to the floor clutching it in pain.
“Why did you hit me…?” Koby whined.
“You were getting annoying.” I frowned; arms folded again.
“Just because,” Luffy shrugged.
“…That’s all right, I’m used to it,” Koby said, moving off the floor and onto his knees.
“That’s just sad.”
“Yeah! You’re really a wimp!” Luffy laughed. He then paused and angled his iconic straw hat down to cover his eyes. “And I’m gonna do it because I want to. I’ve decided to become King of the Pirates, so if I die fighting for that, that’s fine with me!”
“Hey, that was pretty inspiring, Luffy!” I clapped him on the shoulder. Now, how about we go and find a boat to get out of here?”
“Sounds good to me! My belly’s full anyway! Do you think they’ll give us one if we ask?”
“Only one way to find out!”
“Do you think I can do it too? If I’m ready to die for it?” Koby asked from behind us.
“Huh? Do what?” Luffy asked.
“Do you think... even I could become a marine?”
“Sure.” I shrugged. “Anybody can do anything if they want to. It’s just a matter of how long it will take. That is if you have the conviction to.”
“Conviction?” Luffy asked, tilting his head.
“Firm belief.” I clarified, “like your conviction to become King of the Pirates.”
“Oh, okay!”
“So, how about it Koby? Do you believe in your dream? Or are you just a liar?” I asked, prodding him for a reaction.
“No! I will become a marine! I will catch pirates! Starting with Alvida!” Koby declared, face determined but knees shaking.
With impeccable timing, the roof caved in and stirred up a cloud of dust, obscuring everybody’s vision.
“You’re going to team up with him to catch who? Huh, Koby?” The deep voice of Alvida cut through the dust as it gradually cleared.
Jeez, Oda, I thought as the room finally settled, you really know how to create some truly appalling people. And that was putting it mildly. Her skin was greasy, and she was drenched in the scent of perfume, not even a pleasant-smelling one at that.
Swords thunked through the wall behind Luffy and me, just missing out heads. Alvida, looked up from Koby to us standing there, a devilish smirk widening on her massive face.
“Neither of you seemed to be Zoro the Pirate Hunter” Alvida continued to smirk.
“Zoro?” Luffy echoed.
“Koby!” Alvida screeched at the cabin boy, “Who’s the most beautiful of all the Seas?!”
“O-of course that w-would be...” Koby started, shaking like a leaf.
“Who’s the chunky old bidder?” Luffy interrupted, pointing at Alvida and causing everyone’s jaws to drop.
“Luffy!” I reprimanded, firmly smacking the back of his head. “You can’t just say things like that! Have some tact!”
“Oh, sorry Foss.” Luffy apologized, getting my name wrong.
“It’s Frost.” I deadpanned.
“YOU RUNTS!” Alvida screamed as she raised her mace to swing down at us. We quickly dodged the widely telegraphed attack, Luffy stopping to pick up Koby as we leapt out of the hole and onto the main deck.
Luffy charged at the Alvida Pirates, doing his classic rubber man hokey pokey to take out the opposing crew.
“H-h-he’s going to die!” Koby cried out, watching Luffy.
“Pshh,” I waved dismissively, “He’ll be fiiiiiine.”
Suddenly, we were interrupted by a sword being plunged into my back and coming out my chest. I turned my head to stare at the man who had stabbed me.
“Excuse me, but that was incredibly rude,” I informed the rapidly paling pirate. I raised my leg foreword before swinging it back and catching the pirate in the groin. Ooh, that’s gotta hurt. I then moved so that my back was facing Koby. “Do you mind taking that out? It’s a little irritating.”
Koby, to his credit, did take it out, but not without screaming in fear afterwards and letting the sword clatter to the deck of the ship.
“Hey, Frost! Hey Koby!” Luffy greeted as he ran by us, hand still gripping the mast as his arm stretched out.
“Hey, Luffy! You might want to let go now!” I called back as he ran further up the deck.
“I’ve got a better idea!” He called back. “Gum-Gum Rocket!” he then stopped running, allowing the elastic energy that he had built up to release, sending him flying back, slamming into all the stunned Alvida Pirates just as they attempted to run away.
“What?!” Every still standing, besides myself, yelled after watching Luffy perform the physically impossible feat.
“L-Luffy, what are you?” Koby asked shakily.
“Oh?” Luffy turned to Koby and me, “I'm a rubber man!”
“Devil fruit, I assume?”
“Yep! The Gum-Gum one!”
“I see!”
We all turned to see the hulking form of Alvida step up behind us.
“I’d heard rumours, but I guess that they really do exist!” she proclaimed, having overheard us. “You Seem pretty skilled,” she addressed Luffy, “are you a bounty hunter?”
“I'm a pirate!” Luffy replied.
“Hah! And let me guess, this girl is the only one in your crew!”
“I'm right here ya know...” I pouted after being ignored.
“Nope!” Luffy continued, also ignoring me ( :( ), “Frost is going to going to make her own crew!”
“Oh really...” Alvida remarked, her gaze turning to me. Then, before any of us had much time to react, Alvida reared her mace and swung it horizontally, catching me in the head and liquidizing it.
“Ah! Frost! Are you okay?!” Luffy called to my headless, stumbling body.
“OF COURSE SHE’S NOT OKAY!” Koby screamed, “THERE’S NO WAY SHE COULD HAVE SURVIVED THAT!”
At that moment, a freshly formed head popped out of my body.
“I survived!” I announced.
“SHE SURVIVED!” everybody else exclaimed in shock.
I turned to Alvida, a frown on my face. “Y’know, you people are being very rude, always stabbing me or smashing my head...”
I reared a hand back.
“...It’s really annoying! Aqua Wave!” I cried as I swung my hand forward, a wave of water climbing the ship to follow its movement and engulf Alvida, knocking her over and away from us.
“Hey! You’ve got a devil fruit too!” Luffy observed happily.
I turned to him and grinned. “Nope!” I looked back to Alvida. “Do you want to finish her off or should I?”
“Ooh! I wanna do it!”
Koby, still shaking, voiced his disbelief. “F-finish her off?! L-L-Luffy, I know you’re strong but Alvida is... is...” he trailed off as I could almost see Luffy’s words echoing in his head. “Is the ugliest old hag of them all!” he announced, much to the shock of the remaining Alvida Pirates and to the anger of Alvida herself.
“YOU LITTLE BRA-”
“Gum-Gum Pistol!” Luffy quickly cried, flinging his fist back, transforming kinetic energy into elastic as his arm stretched, before doing the same the other way as it came back and buried itself in Alvida’s gut and sent her flying.
“Aaaaand she’s outta there!” I commented, putting a hand over my eyes in a classic ‘looking at something in the distance pose’. “Nice shot Luffy!”
“Shishishishi! Thanks!” Luffy rubbed under his nose. He then looked over at the now terrified Alvida Pirates. “Oi!”
“Y-Yes?” the whimpered.
“Give Koby a dinghy, he’s going to become a marine,” Luffy demanded.
“Luffy...”
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The explosions rocked the ship we were on and sent spouts of water shooting up.
“Hey, Guys! It’s the marines!” I told the other two, spotting three marine battleships on the horizon.
“Oh, great! You can go join ‘em now, Koby!” Luffy remarked cheerfully. “Well, I'm a pirate, so I'm outta here! Come on Frost!” Luffy said, grabbing my hand and leaping over to a dinghy.
“W-what?! No! They’ll think I'm a pirate, I can’t join them now!” Koby protested, shouting after us.
“Waitwaitwait! Luffy!” I shouted as he swiftly smashed the poles the dinghy’s rope was tied to.
“Yeah?” He asked... only after he cracked the last support.
“...I’m afraid of the ocean.” I whimpered weakly as the foreboding creaking of the post hit its crescendo and snapped.
Next time, on Aquaphobia...
“Hey! Join my crew!” Luffy and I asked in sync before glaring at each other. “I asked first!” We shouted together at the other.
-
Turning to see who spoke, my eyes bulged out and I did a spit take right in Luffy’s face when I spotted the iconically familiar green cap...
