Work Text:
Walnut pushed the door open from the shop holding a small package. She weaved her way through the crowd of cookies, a smile not leaving her face, holding it close to her chest to shield it from the rain. It was her dad's birthday, and although she didn't know exactly what he would like, she knew that he liked coffee, so why not get him a mug with a picture of Walnut, Almond, and Constable Whiskers all together.
She tightened her grip on the package as said rain fell harder. She should have brought an umbrella, but the next best option was just booking it towards the police station. She tightened her coat and continued forward, the rain becoming even harsher.
"Excuse me- pardon me- coming through!" She called to passersby. She should find shelter, but the police station was right there, she could see the lights. Walnut looked for an opening between cookies to get there faster. The rain was becoming too much, and she knew she would be soaking by the time she got inside. Her legs picked up speed when she squeezed through a crowd of cookies, coming to an almost empty street.
She smiled and ran.

Walnut didn't remember what happened, or why she was on the ground, but the present was gone.
"No-" She stood up on wobbly legs, looking around only to find it lying a few feet in front of her. She stepped closer, noticing the pain in her ankle, and hearing the sound of glass pieces ruffle around the bag. Walnut carefully made her way forward. Holding in her tears.
"It's not broken, it just got lose, it still together." She whispered to herself, hoping that it was true, hoping that she didn't break it. But she couldn't lie to herself, she knew what broken glass sounded like. She entered the station, making a puddle of water every time she walked. Down the hall, to the left, finally reaching the door of her dad's office. She knocked, listening for Almond's voice.
"Come in." She pushed the door open, wincing and the pain in her ankle, causing the detective to turn around.
"Walnut, are you okay, what happened." Almond walked over to her, lifting her up and placing her on the couch in his office. Taking off her shawl and replacing it with his overcoat. Walnut lifted her head to stare at him, and couldn't hold in the waterworks, tears fell from her face as she handed him the package.
"I- I got you a present," She sniffled, gaining a sympathetic look from Almond "For your birthday." Walnut watched as he carefully unwrapped the plastic bag and parchment paper. Her face falling when it revealed to be a bunch of glass pieses.
"I'm sorry, I tried, I tried really hard to not break it, I just wanted to give you something, I'm sorry." She began sobbing, her voice breaking. She couldn't look at him, she felt guilty.
Almond sighed, placing the broken cup on the coffee table, and sat next to her. Wrapping his arms around her.
"Oh Walnut," He gently whipped her tears away, brushing wet hair out of her face. "Thank you for getting me something, I'm sure it was a great gift, and I'm sure we can get it fixed, you picked a cute picture." Walnut squeezed him tighter, hiding in his chest.
Almond gently lifted her and stood up. "Let's get that ankle checked out, and then we can go out to diner." Walnut nodded in his chest. Watching him turn off the lights to his office and say goodbye to his co-workers. Before getting dropped in the passenger seat of Almond's car.
"Happy Birthday Dad."
