Work Text:

The mail came every day to Adventurers Mansion. Sometimes it was a bill she would give to his father, sometimes it was junk mail she could throw away, and sometimes it was the letters. There were three letters total. One for Onion, one for Truffle, and one for her. She would read to Onion what Adventurer wrote to the younger cookie, which was mostly just what he was doing during his trips. The ones for Truffle were just places he thought she would like to hear about, and often he would send back a souvenir, like a shell or a feather, which Truffle always happily kept. But Blackberry's were different. Blackberrys were always short, they weren't about the trip necessarily, really it was just him trying to talk to her the only way he could.

Once she delivered them to the other two cookies she would take hers and place them under her mattress. She would only open them at night after all her work was done and she could rest. Carefully reaching under the bedding, pulling out the thin paper.  TO: BLACKBERRY  would be written on the front. Using her fingers to rip the flap open and pull out the letter inside, gently unfolding it and reading through.

Dear Blackberry,

I know I say this every letter but, I hope you are reading these letters, and even if you aren't I wouldn't care, I just hope you are getting them, to let you know that I still think of you.

How are you, I hope you are well. I can't wait to get home and see you again and tell you all the things I couldn't fit in this letter.

I'll be thinking of you.

~Love Adventurer

Blackberry folded the letter and placed it in a box under her bed. Every letter she got was placed into the box, just so she could read them later. And as much as Blackberry wish it wasn't true, her chest still felt warm after reading each letter.

---------

For months this would go on, always the same letters, always the same feeling. She hated him for that, giving her that feeling that left her warm and made her stomach do a little twist.

But it got worse when he came home. Because she was the first person he would go to. And it made her feel special because he would always grab her hand, with a warm smile and pull her into a hug. It was always gentle, and soft, and he would make her breath catch by wrapping his arm around her back, resting his hands on her hip and shoulder, and Blackberry would have to stop herself from kissing him. And he would smell like dirt and the ocean, and like stone, and he always held her for so long, sometimes so long she would have to pry herself away to get back to work. She hated how he could do that to her, and how dumb he was not to notice. Or, maybe he did notice, maybe he knew what he was doing every time. She felt a small amount of hope, that maybe, her small dumb feeling would be returned.

He would only stay for a couple of months, maybe 2 or 3, and then leave. It was a cycle, and every time he left, she would wait for his letters to feel that warmth again.

Notes:

I hope you all enjoyed it. I've been trying to get back into writing, so please tell me if you have any ideas I can write or any criticism.
