Work Text:

"You're making that up," Jin Ling said.

Lan Jingyi crossed his arms and definitely didn't pout.

"I am not!" he said. "There really was a haunted hairpin! Why is it so hard to believe, anyway? It's not even the weirdest thing that happened to us."

"It's too dumb!"

"You're just mad that you missed it," said Lan Jingyi, and regretted it as soon as he heard himself speak. It was true that Jin Ling was going on night hunts with the rest of them a lot less often now, but that wasn't out of his own choice. The whole Sect Leader thing didn't exactly leave him with a lot of free time.

One thing that hadn't changed, though, was that Jin Ling was a stubborn fool who liked to pretend he didn't have emotions, so at least Lan Jingyi didn't get to see his friend look hurt. Instead, the brand new Sect Leader Jin stomped his foot like an angry toddler.

"I have more important things to do! I don't have time to fight a stupid hairpin."

"Well… we didn't actually fight it, after all," Lan Jingyi admitted. He wasn't really in the mood to brag anymore. But he was always great at funny anecdotes. "In the end, we just had to calm a jilted ghost. There was a lot of bad poetry."

Jin Ling's angry expression gave way to a confused blink.

"Wait. Really?"

"Really! You know how Zizhen gets. He even tried to improvise, it was terrible."

That got the effect he wanted. Jin Ling snickered, and it looked like he'd finally relaxed.

"You have to tell me everything," he said. Lan Jingyi grinned at him.

"Gossip is against the rules."

"It's not gossip, it's a report!" Jin Ling said. "And I want to hear every single detail."

"Even the bad poetry?" Lan Jingyi asked. Jin Ling made his best impression of a serious Sect Leader face.

"Especially that."
