Father's Day

Summary:

“But papa! It’s splashing!” The young boy squirmed, moving away from the offending pan and Kenma couldn’t help but to snort.

“Don’t worry, it won’t hit you.” Kenma reassured him again, “Now flip the fish before it burns.”

“Why can’t you do it?” The messy-haired whined, looking up at the streamer.

“I wasn’t the one who said I’ll do the cooking.” Kenma raised his arms up, “I’m only here for supervision.”

“Traitor…”

~~OR~~

Tetsurou accidentally overslept on a Sunday morning but woke up to quite a surprise.

Notes:

I am not ashamed at how much I love the aspect of KuroKen as parents and I am not ashamed at how much story I have written for Kouichi with his parents.

I would also like to thank you all for the overwhelming support on my last fic for Kenma's announcement for Kuroo! Hope you enjoy one of the Kozume household shenanigans to celebrate Father's Day! This can be read as a sequel to the previous fic in this series but can also be a stand alone slice of life one shot.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tetsurou let out a big sigh, rolling over the bed with his arms stretched out, in search for something. But all he met was emptiness and he did not like this coldness. The former blocker squinted his eyes open to confirm his suspicion and indeed his husband was not in bed with him. Tetsurou turned to the bedside table and reached for his phone to check the time and could not believe that he actually overslept on a Sunday.

“How is it already 11?!” He immediately tried to stand up but tripped on the beddings and crashed onto the floor hard. Tetsurou laid on the ground, a bit defeated as he let the pain eased up a bit before pushing himself up.

Tetsurou truly was impressed that Kenma actually woke up early for once as he freshened himself for the day. After putting on a random tee from his room, he made his way towards the stairs, only to smell something delicious wafting through the air. The former captain blinked, definitely confused as he heard the sound of gasping and screaming.

“Calm down, Kou.” He could hear his husband reassuring the young boy while he made his way to the kitchen, peeking inside to see his two favorite people in the world. What he did not expect was to see them cooking and he could hear the sizzling sound and the popping of oil.

“But papa! It’s splashing!” The young boy squirmed, moving away from the offending pan and Kenma couldn’t help but to snort.

“Don’t worry, it won’t hit you.” Kenma reassured him again, “Now flip the fish before it burns.”

The messy-haired whined, looking up at the streamer with pleasing eyes. “Why can’t you do it?”

“I wasn’t the one who said I’ll do the cooking.” Kenma raised his arms up, “I’m only here for supervision.”

“Traitor…” He grumbled, slowly leaning in to put the spatula under the fish filet, flipping it carefully before running to hide behind Kenma, waiting for any oil splash. Kenma couldn’t help but to chuckle at his antic.

“How long do you plan on watching? Not going to say a hi?” Kenma glanced back to the door, seeing how wide Tetsurou's eyes was at the scene. The boy behind him flinched, turning around and Tetsurou then was met with two golden pairs of cat-like eyes, staring at him.

“W-What are you two doing?”

“Cooking? I know you’re surprised, not blind.” Kenma snorted.

“I get that much!” Tetsurou stood up straight, scoffing. “But why? What’s the occasion? Why are you even up so early?”

“Are you offended that I decided to let you sleep in?”

“Seeing how you closed the curtain and turned off my alarm, yes.” Tetsurou nodded.

“Kouichi wanted to surprise you so he told me he wanted to cook lunch for you.” Kenma murmured, turning to turn off the gas and set the fish to the side to rest. “And he asked me what we should make.”

“Ha? But what’s the special occasion? It’s only June…” Tetsurou glanced down at his son, noticing him fidgeting nervously. Kenma cooking for him wasn’t unusual. The streamer had to teach himself how to cook a few years after they moved in together, on the rare occasions that Tetsurou would be away on business trips or when he got off work late. But seeing his son who was barely 8 cooking? Tetsurou had no idea why the boy would want to cook for him.

“It’s… Father’s Day… So I thought I’d surprised you…” Kouichi murmured under his breath and Tetsurou went to scan the table. It was already set up with rice bowls and even side dishes. He could also pick up the smell of miso soup on the covered bowls besides the rice. “So I woke up early and had papa help me…”

Tetsurou widened his eyes and could feel himself tearing up. He quickly ran over to the young boy, picking him up and squeeze him tightly.

Kouichi let out a huge squeal, grunting at how hard his father was hugging him. “D-Dad, let me go.” Kouichi struggled under his grasp but Tetsurou only tightened it, a huge grin on his face.

“But my son cooked for me!” He let the boy down, still too giddy at the surprise.

“I-It’s not that big of a deal…” He averted his eyes, looking away and Tetsurou scoffed, patting onto his back.

“You should learn to take compliments. You’re too much like your father.”

“Excuse me? That’s your genes.”

Kouichi sighed, pushing the two men towards the table. He very much didn't need to hear their banters this early in the day. “Please flirt when I’m not here.” He ignored the hideous cackle from Tetsurou but was glad his parents sat down anyway. “I’ll bring out the fish.”

“What fish did you make anyway.” Tetsurou watched Kouichi carefully set up three long plates side by side. He then grabbed the spatula and focused on not dropping the fish while transferring them between the pans and plates. “He’s a lot like you.” Tetsurou hummed.

“How so?”

Tetsurou chuckled, his eyes still trained on his son, “His face when he’s focusing.” Kenma followed his gaze, “His furrowed brows and concentrated eyes. Even that sticked out tongue.” He snickered.

“I do not do that.”

“Do too.”

“Do not.”

“Do too.”

“Do no-“ Tetsurou immediately cut him off by leaning up slightly to face Kenma and gave his lips a quick peck. Tetsurou grinned victoriously at the blush growing on his husband’s face.

“Do too.”

They were interrupted by a huge squawk and Kenma further buried his face under his hoodie, grumbling curses at Tetsurou under his breath while Tetsurou broke into a loud cackle.

“I told you two to flirt in private! That was disgusting and I don’t need to see it!” Kouichi scrunched up his nose and Tetsurou laughed. “I’m telling on Yaku-san!”

“It’s the ick face!” Tetsurou cackled but quickly doubled over, holding onto his rib with a hiss. “K-Kenma-san… Why?” He groaned

Kenma retreated his elbow, turning to watch Kouichi carry the fish plates over, “What does Yaku have to do with this?” He completely ignored his husband in pain beside him.

“He told me to tell him whenever you two are being inappropriate in front of a kid.” He set the plates down. “And you two definitely were.”

“It was just a kiss!”

“Yaku-kun is right. You’re a bad influence on our son.” Kenma agreed.

“Kenma-san! You wound me.” Tetsurou put his hand over his heart, pouting in mock sadness. “See look? You just broke my heart.”

Kouichi giggled at his father’s antic, setting down the last plate before sitting down on the other side of the table, in front of his parents.

“But anyway, we should eat.” Tetsurou immediately turned to the feast in front of his eyes. He gave the food a quick scan before looking up, “You made my favorite?” He gasped.

“We don’t have this very often… Besides… It’s your special day.” Kouichi shrugged and Tetsurou beamed widely. Everyone quickly put their hands up and said their pleasantries before Tetsurou took the honor of getting the first bite. Kouichi watched nervously, gulping as Tetsurou chewed through the mackerel.

Tetsurou gulped down and his eyes brightened up, a huge smile growing on his face. “Kou… It’s delicious!” Kouichi seemingly sighed in relief, smiling before digging in as well.

“That was really good.” Tetsurou laid on the porch, basking in under the sunlight. He was practically purring as he felt full. Not only from lunch, but from how much love he could feel from not only his husband, but his son as well.

“You’re like a cat.” Kenma walked over, handing him a cup of iced coffee. “But Kou worked hard. He really wanted to impress you.”

“He’s already impressed me plenty…” Tetsurou pushed himself up to stare at the backyard, a content smile on his face. “Ever since the day I got to call him my son and watched his growth over the years…”

“Sap.”

“But it’s true! There was never a dull day with you two around. I still can’t believe that I’m actually a father with my long-time childhood best friend turned husband.” Tetsurou leaned onto Kenma, nudging him slightly.

“You deserve the best…” Kenma murmured quietly and Tetsurou could feel his heart soar. Before he could attack Kenma with kisses, Kouichi walked up and held a volleyball out.

“Dad, want go to level up with me?”

Tetsurou blinked before grinning widely, standing up.

“Of course!” They immediately put on the backyard slippers and ran out to start tossing and passing the ball. Kenma sat back, watching the two bed-heads with a satisfied smile on his face.

Tetsurou truly deserved a happy family. Ever since they became fathers 7 years ago, Kenma had made sure to focus the Father’s Day on Tetsurou. Growing up with a childhood like Tetsurou whom didn’t had a normal family, Kenma wanted to make sure Tetsurou deserve only the best. Though Tetsurou did got him back with focusing Mother’s Day on Kenma with the streamer reluctantly agreeing. But that was beside the point. Kenma remembered the day where Tetsurou was so nervous at the news of becoming a father that he could barely hold his son in his arms. He was over the moon with the baby. Months prior, he was worried that he wasn’t fitted to be a father - That he could never provide their child with a good life. But watching how much Kouichi have grown, Kenma really did think Tetsurou have outdone himself.

Despite him having a job that didn’t allow him to be at home to be with their son like Kenma, Tetsurou still made time for them. He was there to witness Kouichi’s first steps, though the toddler waddled over to Kenma instead but Tetsurou couldn’t blame him. And hearing his first word made Tetsurou a sobbing mess. Then his first day at school, Tetsurou was truly a crybaby.

“Papa!” Kenma broke out from his thoughts, turning to Kouichi. “Come toss for us!”

“No thanks.”

“Oh come on! You have to show Kou was amazing Nekoma’s brain was!” Tetsurou grinned, making his way over and grabbed onto Kenma’s arms. Kenma groaned, letting Tetsurou pulled him over.

"I deserve pie after this...”

Notes:

Kouichi's name means One's Happiness. I think it's pretty fitting for KuroKen ^^

Please don't ask how Kouichi was born, I don't know either HAHAHAHAHA. I just want to give him both of their features.

Thank you so much for reading!
