Chapter 1: Good News
“Mom.” An orange-haired boy peeked around the doorway. “Are you doing okay?” He could hear heaving sounds coming from the bathroom. There was a look of concern on the teenagers’ face. “Should I call Dad?”
“I’m fine.” Tohru wiped her mouth and started to clean herself up at the bathroom sink, trying to regain as much dignity as she could. “Just a little under the weather is all.”
Tohru walked into the kitchen to begin making breakfast.
Kyo had already left for the dojo that morning. His mornings were usually early with the type of work that he did. Martial Arts required a lot of discipline, and he did his best to make sure that he kept up that type of lifestyle. He also had to help Kazuma set up for the day. This is something that he has been doing more and more as the years go on. Kyo’s Master is not as young as he used to be, and his age is starting to catch up with him. It is only a matter of time before he will have Kyo take over the dojo in its entirety.
“Master. Where would you like me to place this one?” Kyo held up a banner which was to welcome the new students to the dojo. Tohru had designed the banners herself. Out of the three adults, she was by far the most creative when it came to such things.
“Why don’t you choose? I trust your judgement” the older man smiled. He needed to start giving Kyo more and more responsibility when it came to the decisions inside the dojo, no matter how small.
“Mom, I’m leaving for school.” Hajime waved goodbye to his mother and was out the door.
“Have a good day.” Tohru smiled at him and waved goodbye from the porch.
Tohru instantly turned around and dashed back to the bathroom. It seemed that her spell from earlier was not completely over. And, as always, she does her best to hide her weaknesses from others so as not to burden them with her problems.
“What happened to me?” She quietly asked herself. “This is not normal.” For a moment she had thought to give Kyo a call and let him know what is going on, but she did not want to bother him while he is at work with such a trivial thing as her not feeling well.
“Maybe some fresh air will help.” She went outside and started walking around the yard. Eventually she sat down on the porch swing that Kyo had built for her some years ago. It was a nice addition to the property. It was made from dark oak wood that blended with their home very well. She began swinging on it and eventually it put her to sleep with the sun shining down on her.
Arisa walked up the steps to the Sohma home that Kyo and Tohru shared. Every Friday Tohru and Arisa would meet with Akito for lunch. Both Arisa and Kureno, as well as Kyo and Tohru, had moved back to the area after being away for some time. She walked in on Tohru passed out on the swing and immediately rushed to her to help. “Tohru, Tohru. Are you alright?” she shook her friend to wake her.
Tohru slowly opened her eyes. “Uo-chan. What are you doing here?” She was in a daze. Not too sure of her surroundings at that moment.
Arisa put a hand to Tohru’s head. “You’re burning up! What are you doing out here?” She helped Tohru to get back inside and sat her on the couch.
“I was just getting some fresh air. I haven’t been well today. I’m not sure what it is.” She confessed. Then she ran back to the bathroom again.
Arisa followed her. “What is going on? This is not normal. I’m calling a doctor.” Tohru gave her a look that made her know that she didn’t want that. “What should I do? Should I call your husband?”
“No. Don’t bother him with something as trivial as this.” Tohru then passed out again in front of the toilet.
“You more than anyone should know that you can’t take a sickness like this lightly.” Arisa got out her phone and did the only thing she could do in a situation like this.

It was around lunchtime and Kyo had just finished with his second class of students for the day.
“Kyo! You have a phone call!” Kunimitsu waved the phone above his head to signal Kyo to come over.
‘That’s strange.’ Kyo thought. As he never gets phone calls while he is at work. ‘Did something bad happen? Is Hajime fighting again?’ He thought.
He took the phone. “Hello?” He asked. He was shocked by who was on the other line, not expecting it.
“There’s something wrong with Tohru. She passed out. She needs a doctor but refuses to see one.” She held a hand up to Tohru’s forehead once more. Her skin was still warm, but not as hot now that she was not under the blazing sun. “She’s going to hate me for calling you like this, but I feel that you need to come home.” Arisa blurted out from the other end of the line. Kyo could tell she was somewhat panicked and that was not something that this strong girl did very often.
“I’ll be right there. Thanks for letting me know.” Kyo hung up the phone.
“Kunimitsu, I need to leave. Can you cover for me in my remaining classes for the day?” Kyo held out some paperwork. “Follow this plan and everything should go smoothly. Please give my apologies to the kids.” Kyo had a soft spot for the kids that came to his classes.
He had secretly wished that Hajime would be interested in martial arts so that he could have a relationship with him like he had with Master. However, he had decided that he would not force Hajime to do martial arts if he didn’t want to.

Kyo arrived at the house, sweat beating down his face. He ran from the train station so that he could get home as quickly as possible. He opened and closed the sliding door. This action alerted Arisa to his presence.
“I have managed to get her into bed. We were meant to go to lunch which is the only reason that I was here. I don’t know what’s going on with her, but I think we should call Hatori or a doctor to help her.” Arisa tried to explain as best as she could what she had witnessed.
“Thanks. Can you please wait out here for a moment?” He headed to the bedroom to see Tohru.
“Tohru.” He whispered as to not scare her. She stirred slightly and he was relieved that she was at least conscious.
She opened her eyes.
“Kyo? What are you doing home already?” She asked.
“Uotani called me and told me that she found you passed out.” A bead of sweat fell down his worried face. This made her feel a little uneasy. “We’ve talked about this before.” He knelt down next to her and threw his arms around her. “I was so worried when I got that phone call.”
“I just didn’t want to be a burden to everyone so I thought I would try to take care of myself.” She confessed. “I can’t keep anything down, though. So, I thought I would go outside and get some fresh air. That’s when Uo-chan found me.”
“If she hadn’t found you today. If you hadn’t had your lunch date, then…” he had tears in his eyes. “You might have ended up staying like this all day until I returned.” He felt her forehead to see if she still had a fever. “You’re a bit warm. I am going to call Hatori.” When she looked at him to protest, he added, “I’m not asking.” He turned away slightly from her but then thought better of it knowing it would worry her. He turned back to her and gave her a soft kiss on the forehead to reassure her and left the room to make the phone call.
Once he was finished with his phone call to Hatori, he returned to the living room where Arisa was waiting.
“Uotani. Thank you for what you’ve done today. You have no idea what it means to me that someone was here to find her. I have it from here. I’ll give you a call later once Hatori has seen her.” He gave her a slight smile and walked her out. “I’m sorry for this. You know how stubborn she can be, and it’s to her own detriment.”
“I know that better than anyone.” Arisa confessed, knowing her friend so very well. Then she continued. “Tell Tohru we will take a rain check for next week if she’s feeling up for it.” She smiled softly and left, knowing that her best friend was in good hands. Arisa then turned to leave waving her hand as she walked away.
Once Arisa was gone, Kyo called Hatori and requested that he come and take a look at Tohru.
Hatori gave Tohru an injection which would help with the nausea. “Try to rest. I know how difficult that is for you. I’ll have the blood results back in a few days.” Then he turned to Kyo who was sitting on a chair in the corner of the room. “Make sure she does. And no large meals for a while so that she keeps it down.” He handed Kyo a prescription. “Get this filled, it will help the fever break.” He started to walk away and then suddenly stopped in his tracks and turned around. “Also, don’t let her do any strenuous activity such as cleaning or cooking large meals. You can manage that for a while, yes?” And with that, he was gone.
Later that afternoon, Kyo got the medicine and had her take it. He also brought her some saltine crackers and water hoping she would be able to keep down the simple meal. Suddenly, the phone started to ring. Kyo picked it up and answered. “Hello?”
Hajime was on the other end of the line. “Dad? What are you doing home so early?”
“Your mother isn’t feeling well so I came home. What’s up?” Kyo asked.
“I just wanted to let mom know I wouldn’t be home for dinner as I have some Student Council business to take care of here.” Kyo still couldn’t believe that his son would become the president of the student council, beating out his cousin Mutsuki who is Yuki’s son. He finally won against Yuki in some way, and it gave him great pleasure.
“Okay. Don’t be out too late and be sure not to miss the last train. See you later.”
“See you later, Dad. Tell mom I hope she feels better.” They hung up the phone after that.

A couple of days passed, and they were still waiting on the results of the blood tests that Hatori ran. While the medication provided did help the fever break, it was still difficult for Tohru to keep anything down. Kyo had to return to work the day after, and Tohru was given strict orders to call him if anything came up or if she felt like she did before.
Tohru decided later that day that she felt well enough to do some light cleaning. So, she dusted in the living room, cleaning always helped to calm her. It had a relaxing effect on her. She got lost in her cleaning routine and the phone started to ring.
“Hello?” She answered the phone in her cheery voice. “Oh. Okay. That’s rather unexpected.” She continued to listen to the other end of the line. “Alright, I will. Thank you for your trouble.” She blushed a bit at the next part. “I understand. I will. Goodbye.” She hung up the phone after that.
When Kyo got home that evening Tohru had dinner ready as she often did. But this time it looked different. She had candles lit and the lights dimmed. “Tohru?” He called through the house.
Tohru popped her head out of the kitchen. “Welcome home, Kyo!” She wrapped her arms around his neck and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “What do you think? Dinner is almost ready; I’m just bringing out the last of it now.” She gestured to the spread she had on the table.
“It looks great.” But then remembered what Hatori had said about her taking it easy. “You didn’t have to do this. Didn’t Hatori say to take it easy? What’s the occasion?” He asked.
“I’m sorry I went a little overboard tonight considering that I probably won’t be able to eat very much.” She paused then added, “Hajime will be staying overnight at Mutsuki’s house, and I have some news to tell you.”
Kyo was taken aback by this. “News? What news?”
“You might want to sit down first.” She brought the rest of the food out and sat beside him. “You know how I haven’t been feeling very well lately? Hatori called today and told me why.” She looked down. A little worried about how he would take the news she had for him.
He lifted her chin up and looked into her eyes. “What’s wrong?” He asked. His eyes full of nothing but love for her.
“You won’t be upset?” She asked.
“Upset? When have I ever been upset at you? I love you so much.” He smiled that goofy smile he always has only for her. He cupped the side of her face with his hand and gave her a kiss.
She instantly blushed. “I know it’s just… We didn’t plan this.” She held her hand protectively over her belly. “And Hajime is already almost a grown up already. It was unexpected.” She gave him a warm smile.
“You mean?” He gestured to her stomach, placing a hand over it.
She nodded.
He smiled so brightly after that. “That’s wonderful, Tohru!” He stood up and lifted her into his arms spinning her around. “That makes me so happy.” He held her close, tears coming to his eyes. Even though the curse has been broken for so long now, he still can’t believe his lucky stars that he was able to find someone like her. Being able to hold each other like this is not something either of them will ever take for granted.
“How far along are you?” Kyo asked.
“According to Hatori, I’m around 6 weeks.” She blushed.
“You get embarrassed over the weirdest things.” He laughed and held her close once again.
