Work Text:

When Maya Bishop won her gold medal at the olympics, she wasn’t nervous. She wasn’t nervous because she was prepared for the race, she was prepared for what the day would bring. She’d known that had trained herself to the best of what she could be and she’d finish the race as best as she could be. Even when she sat the test to become Captain, she wasn’t nervous. She wasn’t nervous because she studied fires and everything to do with it in her free time, she wasn’t nervous because she was prepared to the full extent but for some reason, for some very odd reason, she was nervous for what was going to happen.

The team knew the blonde had been called to the fire chiefs office, but they just weren’t aware as to why she was called there. Truthfully, she wasn’t sure as to why she was called there either until she arrived. When she had spoken to him, the blonde Captain had been informed that she would be promoted to being Battalion Chief of 19 and would be able to choose from a list the person of whom would replace her as Captain of 19. But she didn’t need to look at the list because she already knew just who would replace her. Andy. She wasn’t on their list but she’d make her to be on the list.

Although she’d still be on shift as their boss, she knew, the one person who would continue to do her job as Captain to help 19 to become better and better would be Andy. It also helped that she was a Herrera, that meant his legacy would still be continued.

Maya was his unofficial daughter and Andy was his daughter. They were able to keep the legacy alive of 19 because of him. And now, now Andy was going to do it for Maya. The blonde also knew that she was the best person for her to work side by side with, and as much as she knew Andy would want to continue being in the field, she definitely wouldn’t miss a chance like this. She’d still be able to fight fires, especially if it were a big one, it was Maya who would be the last one into it. But, she’d still honour her word, she’d always ensure every one of her team got out.

Standing up from her spot behind her desk, Maya moved into her bunker to get out of her dress blues. She wasn’t going to be needing them for the rest of the day, so she could at least put her normal clothes back on. She had just pulled on her shirt and was buttoning it up when she heard a knock on her office door. Maya licked her lips before calling out “Come in, I’ll be out in a second.”

Tucking in her shirt, Maya walked out into the main part of her office as she fixed up her hair. “Hey Andy, thanks for coming.” the Captain spoke as she resumed her spot behind her desk, interlocking her fingers as she placed them on the top of the table.

“Of course, I mean, you did say it was important. But it depends on the importance as to what you’re referring to it as. And, more to the fact, are you talking to me as my best friend Maya Bishop or my Boss Bae of a Captain Maya Bishop?”. Andy spoke as she looked at her best friend. When Maya had personally come to find her to tell her that she needed to talk to her, and if she could come to her office in the next ten minutes, then it would be appreciated. But Andy didn’t know what to expect.

“I guess it’s a bit of both. I’m speaking right now as your best friend, but in a moment I will be speaking to you as your Captain. And what I need for you to do is listen as I speak and take in and process what I tell you. Is that understood?”. Maya spoke in her best friends direction. Now was the time for her to put on her captain pants instead of her best friend pants. She just hoped, after this, her best friend would say yes, she really couldn’t wait to have her by her side. Especially on a scene where it’s all a jerk fest.

“Okay...Okay will, Captain, please go ahead and let me know why it is that you’ve brought me in here. From what I can remember, I haven’t done anything to get my ass kicked for, so unless I’m being blamed for something, it wasn’t me.” Andy spoke softly in response.

At those words, Maya couldn’t help but snort slightly at Andy’s comment. That was definitely something Andy would say. Clearing her throat, Maya sat up straighter in her seat before speaking “As you’re aware, I was told to report to the fire headquarters first thing this morning. Whilst there, I was informed there would be some changes heading for 19′s direction.”

Andy dropped her head back as she let out a groan. She hated when people tried to change something that didn’t need to be fixed. Things like that shouldn’t be touched. “Please tell me you stood up for us and the change isn’t going to come here.”

Oh the change was definitely coming there, and she was looking forward to it, it was definitely going to be interesting. “I did stand up for it. Some of the changes I’m looking forward to. One of them I had to have my say and opinion in it, but in the end I dug my foot in and I got my way.” They had tried to persuade the blonde to choose someone else for Captain of 19, someone of their choosing, someone male. But no, Maya had her own mind made up.

Andy frowned at the blonde that was seated before her “Okay, that sounds a bit ominous. Just what are the changes are you referring to? And by the sounds of it, with having me in your office, it might have something to do with me. So please, tell me as my best friend and Captain Maya as to what is going on.”

Maya eyed the brunette before her, she was nervous too, but not for the same reason as her. She was probably thinking the worst, they all seemed to. “The change that is coming to the station has got to do with the Captaincy. There will be a change in leadership. Tell me, how do you feel about taking your father’s old seat and being Captain of Station 19, permanently?”. the blonde remarked. She bit her lip, watching as the cogs seemed to go around in the brunette’s head.

“I’m sorry what? What is happening to you, you’re our Captain? Maya, we’ve already had times when we fought over being Captain and that nearly ruined our friendship and I couldn’t become Captain if it meant you’d lose your job.” Andy shook her head slightly. Whether she wanted to be captain or not, she wouldn’t be stepping on her best friends feet to do so.

“Andy, breathe. Take in a deep breath. You’re not going to be stepping on anything to becoming Captain. I’ll still be here at 19, just in a different capacity.” she spoke, noting the cogs still turning in her head but unable to figure out why. Normally her best friend was a bit faster than this, maybe she really was having trouble processing what she was saying? Smiling, Maya offered the brunette her hand before speaking “I am Battalion Chief Maya Bishop of Station 19.”

Maya let the grin stay on her face, watching as Andy’s eyes let up, finally connecting two and two as she shook the offered hand. She really was in shock but this was everything. “You’re...you’re the Battalion Chief of 19? Maya!.” Andy spoke as she jumped from the seat that she was in and rounded the desk to pull her best friend up into a hug. “Maya this so exciting. I’m so happy for you! You’re finally getting the job that you’ve been eyeing for. I’m so proud of you.” Andy grinned as she hugged her best friend.

Maya returned the hug with a laugh, squeezing her gently before pulling away with Andy’s hands in her own to look into her eyes “Andy I don’t think you’re fully comprehending as to what I’m saying. The reason why I went to headquarters is because I’m being promoted to Battalion Chief. They gave me options to choose someone as Captain of 19 and I told them I didn’t want their options. I stomped my foot and stood my ground. It’d already chosen my replacement. I chose you. You’re my replacement Andy” Squeezing Andy’s hands in her own. It was with those words did Andy’s eyes widen.

“You..you chose me. To replace you. Maya I...I don’t know what to say. I can’t replace you. That’s just..I can’t.” Andy shook her head. Maya took a hold of her best friend’s hand and guided the brunette to take a seat on the lounge that was in the office.

“Andy, you’re not replacing me. As Captain. You’re going to become your own captain. Yes, we have some similarities in the way that we captain, but you’ll also bring your own ways into it. And I’m still going to be here. I’m still going to be your boss. I’m still going to be looking over your shoulder as to what you’re doing. I’ll still be the one in charge of the scene. The only difference being is that you’ll also have a say. I’ll always take your thoughts and opinions into any decision that I make but it’ll still be like the way it has been. You’ll just get your own office. You’ll get this one, your dads old one.” Maya spoke as she let go of Andy’s hand and indicated to the office that they found themselves in.

Andy frowned for a moment before shaking her head “As much as I want this office, because it was my father’s, I don’t think I could take this office from you. This office is yours. It always has been. But we could always just change the name placard’s and I could take the old Battalion Chief’s office instead? That way you don’t have to move anything. That one is a lot smaller as well, only fitting that the bigger baddy up in here gets the bigger office”

Maya let out a chuckle as she rolled her eyes, of course the brunette thought of that. She sobered up as she nodded “So, are you telling me you’re going to be accepting the offer and become Captain of Station 19?”.

“Yes, I am telling you I will be accepting the offer of becoming Captain of Station 19. You fought for me to become Captain, so I may as well become the Captain you wish for me to be.” Andy let out a laugh as she shook her head “ I can’t wait to tell the rest of the team.”

They had all been called up to the beanery by the captain. the blonde letting them know she’d be up in a minute but as Vic looked around the room, she was slightly worried. Every time they got called up here for a meeting, It was always for one thing or another, but it never ended good. It always came with something that they either didn’t want, or expected. But as she took the time to look at everyone else in the room, they were all looking the same as to what she was feeling. Even Sullivan. He looked a bit off. The only person missing was Andy, did it involve the brunette as well?

But Vic didn’t have time to dig any deeper into her thoughts as their fearless captain emerged from the doorway, their Lieutenant following behind the blonde. Well, this was it. Vic licked her lips as she interlocked her fingers and clasped them together on the table, bracing herself for what was about to come from the talk.

Maya looked back at Andy, her best friend giving the other a supportive nod. It was now or never. Turning her attention back to the team, Maya offered them a smile “Okay guys, I know you’ve been anticipating what happened at the fire headquarters this morning, so I’m going to tell you.” she cleared her throat before continuing “They’ve announced a few changes that’s going to be happening at stations. And Station 19 is one of the places that will be having the changes.”

As the collective words went around the room, Maya tried to ignore the angry tones. Once they’d find out what it was, they wouldn’t be angry, or at least she hopes. “Before you say anything, yes, I did stomp my foot to get things a certain way. And I do also endorse the new changes that are coming, especially this station.”

The blonde waited for that to settle on the team, waiting for a few brief moments. She couldn’t help but look towards Sullivan and wonder why he looked so...off. Maybe he knew something from the meeting? She wouldn’t be surprised. With the news having settled, Maya continued. “With the first change, it’d like to introduce to you, the newest Captain of Station 19. Please give them the cold welcoming you gave me.. Captain Andrea Herrera.” Maya smiled as she indicated towards the brunette standing beside her. Andy couldn’t help but snort at the blonde’s comment, of course she was referring to when she became captain.
With wide eyes, Vic looked between the two women in front of them “But what.. Maya what about you? Why are you both happy? We’ve been through troubles before with people bickering over being Captain..we can’t have that happen again now when we are literally at our best.” Vic responded, looking between the two.

Maya looked back at her newest Captain, winking at her, indicating for her best friend to take over where this was going. “We are both happy, you’ve got nothing to worry about guys. Maya is the one who spoke to me about becoming Captain and taking over from her to fill in her shoes, the same ones my father had before her. We had a brief talk about things then we came here. But I thought I should tell you the rest of the new changes that are coming to Station 19.” Andy swallowed the lump that was forming in her throat before indicating her arms towards Maya “It’d like to introduce to you the newest Battalion Chief of Station 19, please give her the warmest possibly welcome, Battalion Chief Maya Bishop.”

It was with those final words did they get the response that Maya had hoped for. The excitement shone through once the news had settled down. Vic was the first person to jump out of her chair, making her way over to her two best friends and throwing an arm around them both, bringing them in close.

“I’m so happy and excited for you both. Andy gets to be the Captain she always wanted to be and Maya..Maya you get to be the Battalion Chief you’ve always been fighting for. We are going to be the first station lead by both women.” Vic let out a small squeal, squeezing them gently.

With a laugh, Maya patted Vic’s back as the brunette moved out of the way so the rest of 19 could congratulate the duo. They really were going to be the first station to be lead and run by two women, and Maya honestly be happier, and prouder. They’d come so far and here they were. Not too long ago, they’d been fighting over the same position, the same position that the other two Lieutenant’s probably deserved more with the experience they had but for Maya, Maya had the determination and the will more so than the others. But if she were being completely honest, she was happy with how it had ended. With how it was going. Because it lead them there. It lead them to becoming the best Station they could possibly be, and, being the best family they had always aspired to be. They were a family, and from here, only up could they go.
