Chapter Text
The knock at the front door startles y/n and the dogs. They had been tucked in on the couch when the loud rhythmic boom came from the front door. Slowly she walks towards it with the dogs circling her barking the whole time. She eyeballs the shotgun next to the door making sure it’s within reach before peaking through the door.
On the other side of the door stood a distressed looking Sam Winchester. Opening the door slowly she gets a better look at the tall Winchester. He was not looking's best. His cheeks were sunken and he looked as if he hadn’t slept in a week.
“Hey Sam. This is a surprise.” She looks around for the eldest Winchester and comes up empty. “You here alone?”
Shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot and raking his hand through his hair he mutters,
“It’s just me. Dean is— he’s somewhere else.”
“Oookay. Do you want to come in. Not to offend but you look terrible.”
He smiles with no humor and says
“No I can’t come in. I have somewhere I have to be. I just-“ he looks at her with so much desperation. Like he had so much to say but not enough time to say it.
“Please Sammy come in. Let me get you a coffee at least.”
“No really I have to be in Detroit by tomorrow morning.”
“Then why are you here?”
“ I guess— I guess I wanted to say goodbye. Some real bad shit is about to go down and I don’t think I’ll make to the other side. Not in one piece anyway.”
She feels her heart squeeze with panic. She doesn’t understand how something could be bad enough that the Winchesters wouldn’t make it out alive. Grabbing his hand she squeezes it like it was a life line. She pleaded with him,
“Please. Just tell me what going on. Maybe I coul-“
Before she could finish her statement he was pulling her into his chest. Holding her tightly to him he kisses the top of her head. Taking a deep shuttering breathe he pulls away and places a hand on her face stroking her cheeks softly. Sam ever the valiant hero tries to give her a reassuring smile.
“I don’t want you anywhere near this. Its-it’s really bad.”
Giving him a raised eyebrow she opens her mouth to protest; however, before she was able to form words he cuts her off with a kiss.
Sam and Y/n had always had a charged relationship. They were friends and they worked well together but they also had underlying sexual tension. They had always danced along that line between friends and something more. Sam had finally pulled them over that line. Right after tell her he was probably going to die tomorrow.
With only a moment of hesitation Y/n kissed him back trying to put everything that was still unsaid into the kiss. She had always imagined Sam's kisses would be soft and gentle with just enough bite to make the blood zing. And she wasn’t far off but all of that was tinged with the air of desperation that she felt as well.
Breaking the kiss all to soon he rests his forehead against hers breathing heavily. He cups her face with both of his large hands. Tears start to pop up into her eyes as she moves her hands to clutch at his jacket.
“I should have done that a long time ago.” Sam said chuckling sadly.
Pulling him down to peck his lips again as the tears she has been trying to hold back start to flow she whispers,
“Yeah, you really should have. Wish you would never stop.”
Sam kisses her again running his hand down her body to her hip to pull her close to his body. He was desperate to be as close to her for as long as possible. Breaking the kiss again he looked down at her as she gave him a half hearted watery smile. He pulls her to his chest in a strong hug as a sob was ripped from her throat. They stood their on the front porch gripping each other for dear life before Sam slowly began to pull away. He whispers,
“I have to go.”
Pulling on his jacket again she looks up at him with pleading eyes.
“Please don’t go.”
“I’m sorry but I have to.”
Giving him a half smile that doesn’t reach her eyes she gives a decisive nod.
“I know you do.”
She places her hand on the side of his face and leans up to give him one last kiss. Before she pulls away she whispers,
“ Come back to me.”
He give her a nod and squeezes her hip before turning around and walking down the steps.
Y/n stood watching him go with silent tears running down her face. She wanted to believe that he’d come back to her and that everything would be okay but she knew better.
A hunters life was never that easy.
