Work Text:

He said, “Let’s get out of this town

Drive out of the city, away from the crowds”

Sugawara felt stupid, Oikawa had bumped into him after their first practice match against each other. All Sugawara was trying to do was find Hinata but then, thump , he’s knocked over and caught by a strong hand. He met dark chocolate eyes and felt a blush rise to his face.

“Sorry about that,” Oikawa said with a smirk. “I should’ve been paying attention like Iwa-chan always tells me to, but wow, you’re very pretty.” His eyes flicked down to Sugawara’s jacket as he helped him stand upright. “You’re from Karasuno?”

“Um, yes, I was just looking for a lost teammate but I seem to have gotten lost myself…” Sugawara trailed off with a small chuckle. “You’re Oikawa, right?”

“The one and only,” Oikawa said with a wink.

“Mhm, well, the one and only Oikawa, could you direct me towards the front of the school please?”

“Of course, Mr. Pretty Boy~” Oikawa teased as he motioned for Sugawara to follow him.

Sugawara rolled his eyes, “I do have a name you know, it’s Sugawara. Also you’re walking way too fast.”

“Do you always complain this much Suga-chan?”

“Hm, sometimes, I’m just enjoying giving you a hard time though,” he fell into step at Oikawa’s side as he slowed down his pace.

Oikawa hummed in acknowledgement and turned them left down a hallway. They walked in awkward silence down the hall until it deposited them at the front doors of the school.

Sugawara spotted the bus parked outside and gave Oikawa a genuine smile. “Thanks Oikawa, I guess I’ll see you next match.”

Oikawa hands him a folded slip of paper, “We could see each other much sooner if you’d like, and with less teammates around. Just us two together.” He flashed a charming grin and turned around with a wave, “Let me know when~”

Sugawara stood there flustered and dumbfounded, as he watched Oikawa’s retreating figure round the corner. “Stupid playboy,” he huffed and shoved the paper in his pocket before he headed out to the bus where everyone was waiting for him.

I thought heaven can’t help me now

Nothing lasts forever, but this is gonna take me down

Sugawara did end up texting him, cursing himself for falling for Oikawa’s charm as he did so. They made plans and met up the next weekend at a café, having friendly conversations over coffee and tea. These plans continued for weeks, more frequently on weekdays and for longer periods of time. Every day that Sugawara saw him, got to know him better, and break his walls down more, he fell harder and harder until he couldn’t deny it any longer…

He was in love with Oikawa Tooru

He’s so tall and handsome as hell

Sugawara looked up from his phone and met now-familiar dark chocolate eyes as Oikawa jogged up to him. He admired his perfect form and his goofy grin as he came up next to him. “Hey handsome, come here often?” he teased with his own grin as Oikawa blushed a bit.

“Sure do, but only to meet someone special,” Oikawa pretended to look around. “I don’t see him around though, do you?”

Sugawara playfully nudged him and they both laughed at each other.

“Want to get some ice cream, Suga-chan?” Oikawa gestured to a shop across the street.

“Of course,” Sugawara grabbed his hand and pulled him along to the shop with a grin.

He’s so bad but he does it so well

Their first official match against each other. It ended in a loss for Karasuno and everyone was shattered. But Sugawara? He was savoring the moment he had out on the court. The small amount of time he had to admire Oikawa’s skills up close, and to subconsciously collect information on him for future matches.

He noted how well he seemed to know his teammates, all their strengths and weaknesses, but his eyes seemed to lack emotion, besides when he glared at Kageyama, but even then he seemed empty. His fangirls called and cheered for him, which he smiled at, but Sugawara saw the sight strain in it. When Oikawa noticed him staring, his smile melted into a genuine one and he made a ‘call me later’ gesture before being swept away by his team.

Sugawara smiled back, surprised he wasn’t a puddle, and trailed after his own, sullen team.

I can see the end as it begins

Not too long after Karasuno’s loss to Aoba Johsai and Aoba Johsai’s loss to Shiratorizawa, Sugawara ended up comforting a crying Oikawa.

“Shhh, it’s ok,” Sugawara said quietly as he rubbed circles on his back.

    “No i-it’s not,” Oikawa sniffled. “W-We couldn’t get p-past.”

Sugawara tightened his embrace and Oikawa’s sobs slowly stopped after a couple more minutes.

Oikawa carefully pulled back from the embrace with a sniff, “Sorry for crying on your shoulder, Suga-chan.”

“It’s no problem, really,” Suga said, before he leaned up and placed a kiss on his cheek. He then realized what he did as he saw Oikawa’s eyes widen. “S-Sorry! I’m sorry! I did it without thinking-”

    “You missed.”

    “Eh?”

    “I said, you missed.”

Sugawara felt his face flush and then soft lips on his. He melted into it with a small sigh of relief and wrapped his arms around Oikawa’s neck.

My one condition is…

“Hey, ‘Kawa, remember when we first met?” Sugawara asked, as he swung their linked hands back and forth.

Say you’ll remember me

“Of course I do, I remember it like it was yesterday,” Oikawa said with a smile.

Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe

“I caught you very romantically with my fast reflexes.”

    “After you ran into me…”

Red lips and rosy cheeks

“I met your pretty almond eyes and complimented your stunning beauty.”

    “After admitting you’re an airhead~”

Say you’ll see me again

“Oh quiet you,” Oikawa nudged Sugawara playfully.

Sugawara laughed, “I’m just telling the truth!”

“Well your version of the truth is much different from my version of the truth.”

“Mine’s just more realistic, yours sounds like a Shoujo manga.”

The two laughed as they got to the train station and shared a small kiss.

“I have a test on Thursday so I won’t be able to come tomorrow because I need to study for it,” Oikawa said sadly, as he met Sugawara’s gaze. “I can come on Thursday though since there aren’t any other tests this week, does that sound good?”

“Mhm, don’t study too late though or you’ll be too tired to remember anything,” Sugawara smiled. “Thursday it is.”

Even if it’s just in your

Wildest dreams

“You could come help me study,” Oikawa grinned, accompanied with a wink.

    “In your dreams ‘Kawa~”

“Of course, you already fill my dreams though.”

Sugawara chuckled, “Aw, that’s cute, but you’re going to miss your train if you keep sweet-talking me.”

Oikawa panicked a bit and gave him one last kiss and a wave before he rushed to catch his train home.

Wildest dreams

A house. A child. A loving husband. Nothing more to ask for but to stay like that forever. Sugawara woke from that dream with a smile.

I said no one has to know what we do

“Should we still keep us a secret? My team is starting to get suspicious as to why I’m so excited after practice,” Oikawa admitted with worry in his eyes.

“I… I think we should for now, but you don’t have to if you can trust who you’re telling. I just don’t want your parents to find out and for my team, if Kageyama found out I’m not sure what would happen there,” Sugawara ranted before he slipped his hands into Oikawa’s. “We can tell everyone eventually though, I just don’t want you to be hurt because of me.”

“You could never hurt me Suga-chan, everything’s better with you around.”

His hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room

Sugawara woke entangled in limbs and warmth. His arms were around Oikawa’s bare torso, and his face buried in his neck. He stayed like that awhile longer, enjoying the feel of soft skin on his, until Oikawa shifted awake.

“Good morning, Tooru,” Sugawara said softly.

“G’mornin’ Koushi,” Oikawa mumbled tiredly. His hand came up to the back of Sugawara’s head and his fingers ran through his silver hair.

Sugawara quietly hummed at the action and for the first time, he was grateful to have his own apartment.

And his voice is a familiar sound

“Mr. Pretty Boy~”

“Mr. Refreshing!”

“Suga-chan!”

“Koushi…”

Many names, one person. Each one when called by Oikawa never failed to light up a certain silvernette’s face.

Nothing lasts forever

Their first fight. Oikawa didn’t show up to their date, ignored Sugawara’s texts and calls, gave no explanation, and showed up the next day like nothing happened.

    “Where were you yesterday?”

    “Extra practice with Iwa-chan.”

“And you didn’t think to tell me?”

“I thought I did but why do I need to tell you everything I do?”

“Because you stood up our date yesterday!”

“Calm down Suga-chan, I’m sorry I forgot to tell you but it won’t happen again.”

Sugawara muttered a ‘whatever’ and they went into the movie theater in silence.

But this is getting good now

     Knock knock knock

“Who the heck could that be?” Sugawara grumbled to himself. He set his book on the table and went to open the door, surprised to see his boyfriend.

“Hey Suga-chan~” Oikawa said with a bright smile.

“Wha- What are you doing here?”

“I brought you something because I feel bad about missing our date!”

Sugawara’s eyes flicked down to the tupperware in his hands. “What is it?”

“Super spicy mapo tofu of course! What else could it be?”

“Literally any food, but come on in, sorry for the mess, I wasn’t expecting you over.”

Oikawa walked in with a grin and Sugawara couldn’t help but stupidly grin back at him.

He’s so tall, and handsome as hell

Sugawara watched as Oikawa removed his shirt, sitting back on his heels above him, and let his eyes roam his body.

Oikawa smirked as he tossed his shirt to the floor, “Like what you see Koushi~?”

Sugawara nodded his head. “You’re perfect,” he breathed.

He’s so bad but he does it so well

See now, Sugawara’s crying, alone once again in his apartment. Oikawa is gone, halfway to Argentina at this point and Sugawara feels as though his heart left with him.
