It was just a regular day for A Shift and the calls so far that day had been pretty standard, until they responded to a fire alarm at Key Bank. They didn’t just walk into an emergency but into an ongoing bank robbery.
“Shit,” Andy muttered under her breath as she joined Travis, Dean and Vic on the ground near an injured bank teller.
“This is going to be a shitshow,” Dean rumbled as he glanced around at the high-strung bank robber who was flinging his AK47 around like it was a toy, “SPD, just arrived,” he continued, his anger at the police had lessoned somewhat since the end of his lawsuit but he was still bitter when he had to deal with the police while out on calls.
Travis merely kept his mouth shut and his head down, this was going to be getting complicated and not just because of the tensions currently between the SPD and SFD but also because of the aftermath of Dean’s lawsuit against the PD. At the moment their lives were completely depended on those officers doing their jobs and no one needed any of the drama from Miller and Hughes being added into an already volatile mix.
“Travis?” Vic called as she tried to get his attention.
“Quiet,” he whispered as his attention was drawn to the smoke that was collecting along the ceiling of the room that they were being kept in, “check the ceiling out,” he gestured with his head in order to prevent their fellow hostages from noticing the smoke swirls around them.
“Damn it,” Andy groaned quietly, “we need to get the hell out of here.”
“Agreed,” Travis replied as he glanced over his shoulder to the gunman who was watching them, “where the hell are the police?”
“Like their going to help,” Dean muttered under his breath.
“Dean, seriously?” Vic slapped his chest in disbelief, “grow up,” she ordered as she wondered what had happened to Dean at Maya’s wedding, he had been acting off ever since.
“Shut up over there!” screamed the bank robber who was watching them.
“OK, alright, we’ll be quiet,” Andy called out as she held her hands up to show she was listening, “shut up Miller.”
Dean’s face grew darker as he forced himself to stop antagonizing the people holding them hostage, “Right,” he agreed as he forced himself to calm down and to think of his daughter, Pru and that he needed to make it home to her in one piece and not in a body bag, “I just need to calm down.”
“Yeah,” Vic agreed as the four firefighters quieted down as they opted to keep watch of their fellow hostages as well as the hostage takers who were getting worked up for some reason, “what’s going on?” she questioned silently as she nodded where the other two robbers just showed up at the door.
“Their worried,” Travis realized, “something is going down outside,” he hurried to finish the statement before he drew their attention toward them, they didn’t need any more attention on them then necessary.
“About time,” Vic commented nearly an hour later after the SWAT team finally breached the bank doors and arrested the bank robbers.
“Listen up people,” the SWAT team leader called out over the panicked voices of the newly freed hostages, “you will all need to be debriefed so we will try to get this done as quickly as possible. Now, as you leave the bank, leave all personnel belongings behind, and keep your hands to your sides. Any questions?”
“Why?” Dean muttered underneath his breath but not quietly enough because he was overheard by the officer standing nearby.
“Because we don’t know if one of you is a robber in disguise,” he countered with a look of disbelief on his face at the firefighter’s attitude at his fellow first responder.
“Nice job Miller,” Andy commented as she spotted the gathered officers turn their backs on them in disgust, “piss off the guys who just freed us,” she shook her head as she made a mental note to speak with the captain in order to get him into some sort of counseling. They couldn’t afford Dean’s attitude in situations such as this, come to think of it though as she thought over all of their reactions during the robbery, they all needed to be given some form of counseling as well as training in what to do if this situation ever happened to any of them ever again. Because none of them behaved correctly and that could be used against them as individuals as well as a station as a whole. They needed to do better, they needed to BE better.
As the hostages were taken to a make-shift holding area, Engine 23 moved in in order to put out the fire that had been growing steadily larger throughout the entire robbery.
As the freed members of Station 19 walked out into the soft glow of the street lights they were shocked to see the amount of police cars encompassing the street, “What the…” Andy frowned as she glanced around in disbelief, “I have never seen so many cop cars in one location.”
“Me neither,” Travis shook his head as he spotted the other members of 19 who were standing near the ladder truck and Aid Car, ‘over there,” he pointed toward the others who were just past the police lines.
“Great,” Dean sighed out in relief when he spotted the others leaning against the truck watching them approach with relief on their faces.
“Welcome back,” Sullivan called out as the four-man team as he came forward in order to intercept them before them even made it past the police line and forced the group to came to a stop in front of him, “the detectives need to get your statements for the police report,” he gestured toward the approaching plains clothes officer who was coming up from behind them.
“I’m Detective Adams, and I will need to get all of your statements before you are allowed to leave the area,” he gestured toward the yellow tape where their team was waiting for them and then back towards where the rest of the hostages were standing around waiting for the police to interview them so that they could leave.
“Got it,” the weary firefighters responded, each getting ready for another couple of hours of standing around and doing nothing.
“Firefighter Montgomery,” he called out causing Travis to jerk slightly as he raised his hand in reply, “if you can follow me,” he then turned around and led the way to a nearby tent in order to take Travis’ statement.
“Guess I’m up first,” he called over his shoulder as he headed after the officer.
Travis wrote out his statement quickly while answering any questions that the gathered officers asked of him, he wanted this to be done quickly so that he could get out of here and back to the station. He was hopeful that Emmett hadn’t heard of the hostage situation but he wasn’t holding his breath for that though. He would probably need to talk his boyfriend down off of the ledge he had ended up on due to his worrying about Travis and the others.
“Firefighter Montgomery,” a familiar voice called out from behind Travis causing the firefighter to falter slightly in disgust, “Chief Dixon,” Travis greeted as he turned around and was greeted by the unexpected appearance of Emmett’s father, “I didn’t know that the Deputy Chief of Operations responded to bank robberies.”
“We don’t,” Michael countered swiftly as he gazed at Travis with an interested look in his eyes, “there was an unexpected situation here today, that required my presence.”
“Oh?” Travis frowned at that news; did he miss something inside the bank?
“Yes,” Michael replied as the gathered officers exchanged disbelieving gazes that Travis didn’t know the reason for his presence there, “my son’s boyfriend was a hostage.”
Travis’ eyes widen at his comment, “Emmett told you?”
“No,” Michael responded as he moved closer to Travis so that the other officers wouldn’t hear his next words, “despite what you may think, I love my son, even if I don’t approve of his choices. If something happened to you underneath my watch, I doubt that he would ever forgive me for that.”
“Oh.”
Slightly louder so that the other officers would hear him, “Emmett is with the rest of 19.”
Travis’ eyes lite up at the news that Emmett was there waiting for him, “Thank you, sir.”
“Go,” Michael ordered as he watched as Travis quickly left the tent as though the hounds of hell were after him.
Travis was waved through the police line with ease, which he was currently thankful for since it prevented Andy and the others from intercepting him on his way out of the tent. He shot a quick glance toward them and it appeared that they were still waiting for their turn to be interviewed by the detectives.
“Montgomery!” Sullivan called out as soon as he spotted him, “you’re finished with the police?”
“I just finished my statement,” he nodded his head as he glanced around at the others, “have you guys been here all day?”
“Yes,” Maya replied from where she was leaning against the ladder truck next to jack and a silent Emmett, who was studying Travis silently for any hidden injuries that the firefighter was hiding from them.
“I’m fine Emmett,” Travis stated as he was pulled into a bone crushing hug by his boyfriend, “I’m FINE,” he continued to stress as he ran his hands up and down his back in a comforting motion, “your dad likes me,” he finally tried in order to get a reaction out of the completely silent Dixon.
“My dad? Satan?” Emmett was shocked at that news.
“Yeah, he’s here,” Travis gestured his head over toward the tent where he had given his statement to the police.
“I didn’t know that,” he whispered.
“Yeah, well it’s scary when Satan likes you,” Travis muttered under his breath, just for Emmett to hear.
Emmett burst out in laughter at his comment, “I can’t…he hasn’t spoken to me since I came out.”
“He may not be talking to you, but he knows what’s going on in your life,” Travis revealed as Vic approached them, having just finished giving her statement.
“Hughes!” Sullivan called out in greeting at her arrival to the group, “finished?”
“Yeah,” she nodded her head in agreement, “Andy’s up now,” she reported as she thankfully accepted the bottle of water from Maya.
It took another three hours before Andy and Dean were finally finished with their interviews and for the police to release the Ladder truck and Aid Car from the scene.
No one said anything when Emmett went back to the station with them or said anything when he vanished into Travis’ room with him.
As Travis pulled Emmett down on top of him, he was grateful to be alive and to have Emmett back into his life. That he had someone to come home to everyday after a crappy shift and despite whatever happens from now on, they had each other and that was never going to change.
“Stop thinking,” muttered Emmett as he dragged his mouth down Travis’ neck, “I can hear you from here.”
Travis growled out in response as he dragged Emmett upwards as he twisted in the bed in order to close his mouth over his very talkative boyfriend, “Copy that,” he muttered just as their lips pressed together in a kiss that threaten to incinerate them with the flames that they generated with each other.
Sometimes, talking was just overrated and action spoke more than words ever would.
