Work Text:

“The Night Visitor”

Skye yawn before sighing. Starting to feel worried, she checked the time on the clock on the wall. 1 AM. She frowned, a hand reaching her mouth starting to bite her nails.

She stopped realizing what she was doing. Disgusted with her bad habit, she put her hands at each of her sides tightening the sheets. Her concern growing with each tic toc of the clock, it was driving her crazy and she was about to throw that shit.

What was she doing? She looked so desperate, couldn’t take her eyes off the clock. She seemed to be waiting someone…

TOC TOC

… That was exactly what she was doing.

Her concern became angriness as she reached the door. She took a minute to take a deep breath before opening to her well-known guest.

All the insults she was planning to scream died as her eyes met Yoru’s. Silence became the protagonist. Skye couldn’t find anything to say, today Yoru’s wounds looked so small, just little scratches around his hands and neck. However, his black eyes said it all, he seemed very calm but he was in pain.

Still in silence, Skye nodded giving space to Yoru to enter the room. He shut the door after passing and sit on her bed like the other nights, a routine any of them agreed to have but that happened anyways.

The Australian sighed before reaching the first aid kit in her bathroom, she sat next to Yoru taking care of his wounds. She didn’t ask about what was hurting him so bad, she somehow knew something was really wrong and he wasn’t gonna admitted.

In the nights before, Yoru tended to look at her face while she was healing him, a broken nose, some wounds of night fights in bars, making Reyna angry, the list would goes on forever. He always joke about her freckles and how they were, practically, everywhere.

But today was different, he was avoiding her gaze, Skye was sure, he was hiding something. Whatever happened, Yoru knew she was gonna get mad at him.

—I finished—. Her voice surprise them both, they weren’t aware on how silent the night was.

—Thanks—. Yoru look at his scratches, tiny imperfections that would disappeared in some days, however…— Why didn’t you use your powers?

—I want to use it in that injury you are hiding—. Direct as always, her crossed arms as a proof she wasn’t joking.

But Yoru was stubborn.

—Don’t know what you are talking about—. Both frowned looking at each other.

—Don’t be a drongo and tell me why you are acting strange.

—None of your busyness.

Yoru could see sadness in Skye’s eyes, guilt coming up to his throat but stopping it by bitting his lip.

—Fine, get out, I’m not your personal nurse—. Skye turned her back on him angry.

Even if this was the best opportunity to escape, Yoru stayed where he was sit. He knew he couldn’t just left her without an explanation.

All the memories of the past night decided to attack his head, how Skye took care of him without asking, how she patiently cleaned the blood off his face every time and how he could count her freckles for hours.

An explanation was the least she deserved.

—You were right—. Skye moved her head just a little to make him know she was listening.— About abusing my powers, you were right, I got another one.

Shivers ran down Skye’s body. Worried again, she turned to face Yoru. Everything in silence as she felt her mouth dry, being impossible for her to say a word. Taking a deep breath, she managed to ask:

—How… How big is it?
—The biggest of them.

Skye closed her eyes for a minute, trying to process what this could meant. She didn’t wanna admit it, but she was scared to look at it, she was scared to have to heal it.

—Fine… show me where it is to heal it properly—. She sigh rubbing her temple.

Yoru looked at her hands, the little tremble in them. A desire of holding them to calm Skye filling his mind. He clenched his hands into fists, maybe it wasn’t a good idea. However, he still wanted to make her feel comfortable.

—You said you aren’t my personal nurse. You don’t have to do it—. He turned his face to dodge her gaze, somehow he couldn’t stand those green eyes.

—I mean, yes but… who’s gonna heal you? I think Sage…

—I’ll do it myself—. He frown.

—Listen Rift Boy, this isn’t a joke, your health…

—It’s not a big deal, it’s just a scratch, I shouldn’t have come—. He got up ready to leave.

—Don’t you dare, you were the first to come to my room that night with a broken arm, cause you didn’t want Sage or Brimstone to know about it. And then, all of a sudden, you decided to come every night even for just a bruise. Do not pretend it didn’t happen—. Skye got up quickly with her hands into fists. Even shorter than him, she still looked so big.

—It was just to bother you Flower Girl-

—Yoru!

He stood quietly staring surprised into those fierce green eyes. Skye was the first and only one to shut him up since they met. That was one of Yoru’s reasons to tease her. The way she frown her eyebrows, the little twitch in her nose and the way her eyes seemed to glow in a brighter and powerful green.

The Rift Walker closed his eyes for a minute, a little laugh escaping his mouth realizing that: If he has memorized Skye’s expressions, it was because he spent lots of time looking at her. He didn’t have time to be embarrassed, the pain on his back made him grunt.

—Yoru—. Skye put her hand on his shoulder, her face full of concern.— Please, let me heal you.

The man just sighed agreeing, he couldn’t handle it anymore. Yoru took off his jacket and shirt before laid face down on the bed. Skye took a deep breath and looked at his back. She put her hands on her mouth horrified.

A dark blue scar crossed Yoru’s back almost entirely.

The first scars Yoru had were little, the biggest were no more than 5 centimeters. He always complained that it was nothing, yet Skye could see how they were growing and point it out to him. This reached to a fight that ended with Yoru leaving her room earlier than other nights.

—H-How much does it hurt?—. She managed to ask, hesitant to put her hands on the wound.

—Nothing I cannot handle.

—I don’t think my ability will be enough-

—I trust you.

Skye froze and hold her breath for a minute, surprise for this declaration. She turned to look at Yoru, his gaze trying to share that confidence. She sighed before handing Yoru a piece of cloth to bite. She leaned her hands on Yoru’s back close to his scar.

—This’ gonna hurt mate

Yoru couldn’t process that warning on time. He bit the cloth so hard trying not to scream. He closed his eyes growling in pain and felt tears in his eyes, but he managed to remain as strong as he could.

Meanwhile, Skye was so concentrated on Yoru’s wound, she could felt the coldness, the abysm of a rift and something else, was that what his night visitor felt when walking between dimensions?

The scar was closing, the woman saw surprised how the wound was unifying as she healed it. Finally, it closed completely, just a large dark blue line was left behind on Yoru’s back. Skye knew that scar won’t go away anytime soon.

—Yoru?—. She knelt beside him touching his shoulder. He didn’t respond, he was so pale that Skye got scared.— Yoru?!

—Hey Flower Girl—. He opened an eye to look at her and managed to give her a tired smile.

The Australian sighed relief cleaning the sweat of her forehead with her arm. Skye went to her bathroom before coming back with a glass of water and a humid towel. Yoru was sitting on her bed putting his shirt back on.

Skye gave him the glass and waited while he drank it all. Then, patiently, she started to clean the sweat of his face. Yoru froze again before relaxing against her touch, it always caught his attention how strong could Skye be and her touch so soft at the same time.

He looked at her concentrated face, the little freckles being hard to see with the poor light of the lamp next to her bed. Then, their eyes met once again and Yoru could see clearly the consternation on her gaze.

—Thanks Skye—. She shook her head.

—This is bad Yoru, if those scars keep growing… and we don’t even know what they are!

—There’s no need to worry, I’ll just stop using my powers some days and then-

—You don’t get it—. She frowned.— Those scars don’t bleed, but your skin get ripped! And it’s painful!

The Japanese looked away without being able to argue against. He had to admit that he was a little scared, but also didn’t want to be experimented with. Skye’s hand hold his cheek startling him. Her green eyes full of worry.

—Yoru please, we have to tell Sage.

—No—. He moved his face away from her touch.— She’s probably gonna tell the old man and they are gonna turn this into something serious-

—Cause it is serious! Your teleports are getting you ripped!

—Shut up! It’s not!

—Don’t be a careless idiot! We still don’t know everything about the Radianite, our own powers are dangerous not only for the world but ourselves!

Both got up the bed at the same time, rage in their gaze and worry on their hearts. Again, Yoru could swear Skye’s eyes were glowing in the dark and, after what she said, it was probably true. The Radianite in their bodies, a mystery that could end killing them.

—I’m out, good night—. He turned to the door grabbing his jacket.

—Yoru-

—No, I won’t come tomorrow, and the night after and never. You are not my nurse, you’re nothing mine—. It was painful to say it out loud.

He couldn’t see how much his words hurt her. Skye could punched him, shout some insults. Instead, she grabbed Yoru’s jacket.

—Don’t leave…

—What, are you worried about me?—. Yoru asked sarcastically.

—Yes, I am!

Yoru took a minute to process if he listened right. He turned back to look at her, he gasped at the image in front of him. Little tears running down Skye face, she looked so vulnerable and tiny. Yoru never thought he would see this side of her, the side she always tried to hide.

—I… I… This is your fault! You were just a narcissist idiot that messed up with me all the time! Then you decided to come here one night, and the other and… and now I’m worried about you getting hurt… about…—. More tears ran down her cheeks.

Without saying a word, Yoru came closer to her and wrapped his arms around her. Skye tried to push him away, but he tightened his grip. She gave up and just grab his jacket crying over his shoulder.

Yoru let her and caressed her back. The wondering of what it would feel having her in his arms finally getting answered. It was warm and relaxing, her scent filling his senses.

—Skye—. Yoru pushed her away a bit to make her look at him.— I’m… I’m sorry—. He cleaned a tear from her face and sighed.

Yoru never apologized, he too stubborn to admit an error. That’s why she was genuinely surprised to hear him saying sorry.

—I forgive you—. A little smile appeared on her face.— What are we gonna do now?

—Give me time to think, then I promised you I’ll tell Sage about this scars—. Yoru seemed so honest that Skye just sighed nodding.

—I want to go too, I won’t let them hurt you.

—Pff, you’ll be my guardian?

—Of course! Think I can’t?—. She crossed her arms smiling.

—First you have to reach my height- ouch!

—Drongo!

They laughed before Yoru hugged her again. They remained silence feeling their heartbeats. The night visitor looked at the clock on the wall and sighed, it was his time to go.

Skye left him at her door and crossed her arms. Yoru leaned against the door smirking at her.

—I hope I can come back tomorrow to your infirmary dear nurse.

—Don’t push your luck or the next scar will be my fault.

—Hahaha I won’t expect less.

He didn’t really want to leave, but it would be dangerous if they got caught. But Yoru felt like he should do something else before leaving.

Gladly, Skye was the one that make that step.

She grabbed his jacket making him come closer and kissed him. Of course, he would not waste this opportunity. Yoru grabbed her face and wrapped his arms once again around her as tight as he could.

Sweet, that’s the only description for her lips Yoru could think of. The way they feel making him regretting not doing it before.

Sadly, everything comes to an end. They separated feeling the warm in their faces but with big smiles.

—You know Cypher must have a camera somewhere in this hallway.

—Being honest? I don’t care—. Skye pushed away some Yoru’s hair.

—Pff, of course you don’t—. Yoru shook his head laughing. Then he released her.— See you tomorrow Flower Girl.

—See you tomorrow Rift Boy.

They smiled and Yoru left. Skye closed her door and slept better than ever.

In his room, Cypher was watching his cameras drinking a coffee. Then something caught his attention.

—Oh—. He smiled at what he saw.— Those love birds should be more careful—. He sipped his coffee and then delete the video.— How sad, I won that bet with Breach but don’t have proofs. Bah, it were just five dollars.

He sipped again his coffee and continue watching his cameras.
