Wedding Disaster

Summary:

Today was supposed to be the most important day in Noctis' and Prompto's lives, but it felt more like the most important day in Ignis' life, who organized the wedding. Representatives from other countries, the press, and many cameras were present and awaited a perfect royal wedding. Nothing could go wrong. But, of course, everything did.

Written for the FFXV Divergence Zine 2021.

Work Text:

Today was the most important day in Noctis’ and Prompto’s lives. Even if it seemed rather like the most important day in Ignis' life.

Prompto and Noctis sat next to each other on the sofa in simple, comfortable clothes, their hair still wet from showering and watched as Ignis ran restlessly around the coffee table in front of them. He pressed the phone against his ear and his lips were so tightly closed that only a thin line could be seen.

"I just don't want to believe that the orchestra canceled. Of all the days on which a water pipe in the storage room for their instruments could burst, it can't possibly happen today."

Noctis didn't know if Ignis was talking to them or to himself. He just noticed Prompto turn to him and whisper, "Orchestra? Really?". His voice sounded so incredulous that Noctis just laughed while he shrugged his shoulders.

"Duh, I don't know. It's not that we're allowed to have a say at our own wedding."

Noctis knew that their wedding would be more an event for the people than a day which was special for both of them. After all, Noctis was the prince and heir to the throne and his wedding was going to be a great event. Lots of photographers would come, the press was there, and representatives from other countries had been arriving for days, all of whom had been invited to the wedding.

The palace was full of people that Noctis had never seen before and who all had to be impressed. And for that, the perfect wedding had to be organized. Ignis had actually hired a wedding planner, but after the wedding planner had come up with 'orthodox' ideas (like asking the two grooms about their musical tastes or their wishes) and not adhering to the traditions completely, Ignis had preferred to plan the wedding himself.

In a way, Noctis was actually glad that he was allowed to choose his own spouse and that the tradition of being married to a stranger was abolished some generations ago.

There were far too many people walking around their small apartment besides Ignis. The tailor walked around with the sumptuous suits and freed them from every oh-so-small wrinkle, the decorators waited until Ignis had finished the phone call to discuss the final details with him and Ignis’ uncle was on the phone too and seemed to sort things out.

It was a complete mess and the only ones who just waited calmy were Noctis and Prompto. Which was ironic when Noctis thought that normally the future spouses should go crazy. But they just wanted to get married, whether it was perfect or not.

A smile tugged on Noctis' lips as he grabbed Prompto's hand, squeezing gently whereupon Prompto turned around and smiled before meeting him in a kiss. Noctis didn't understand why Ignis was so worried, what could go wrong with such a wonderful future husband?

Noctis almost forgot the chaos around them, at least until Gladio entered their apartment. And he came alone. An almost fatal look was on Ignis face as he looked to Gladio. The adviser ended the phone call while his opposite was still talking.

"Gladiolus, please tell me that you found the hairdresser and that she is not with you because she still has to bring her utensils here."

Noctis was sure that he had never seen Gladio so reluctant to answer in his entire life. He raised his hand and rubbed the back of his head, clearing his throat before answering with a sigh, "Iggy, I'm really sorry, I couldn't find her anywhere and she won’t answer her phone. Maybe she forgot the appointment?"

The prince could swear he heard the glass of Ignis smartphone breaking as he squeezed it tight.

"Hey, that's not an issue. I can style our hair."

Oh Prompto, you innocent soul. Before Noctis could prevent his future husband from doing it, he had already uttered those words and Ignis' gaze turned to him.

"It is absolutely out of the question that you will do your own hair today."

It was not a question or a statement that allowed any kind of discussion. Prompto just grimaced. He snuggled a little against Noctis, who was caressing his thigh, and looked silently at Ignis. The adviser soon turned back to Gladio.

"Well, that’s indeed an issue. We'll split up the work. You organize a new hairdresser and I'll find a new orchestra somewhere. And nothing else is allowed to go wrong.”

Noctis could swear he heard Ignis grind his teeth while speaking and even Gladio just nodded. Normally it would be the Shield who would take Ignis in his arms and say that he should relax, but today the adviser looked as if his personal honor would be destroyed if the wedding did not go off without a flaw. Even Gladio didn't dare tell him to relax.

Then both went back to their phones and Noctis heard Prompto mumble, "I could very well replace the hairdresser."

Thereupon Noctis turned to Prompto and looked at his fiancé, who no longer smiled, but looked at the chaos around him as if he didn't feel like it anymore.

Noctis knew that look. He knew that most of his childhood he'd looked like that at every official event and he suddenly realized that he didn't want Prompto to feel the same way. Especially not at their wedding.

"Hey Prom, do you really want to do it yourself?"

Noctis whispered his question in Prompto's ear and Prompto looked at him in surprise.

"Yeah, why?” Prompto’s voice sounded surprised, whereupon a playful grin crossed Noctis’ lips.

"Then let's just do it. Let's go and make our wedding the way we want it.” With those words, Noctis got up and pulled Prompto to his feet as well, who laughed a little as he looked around the room.

"We can't do that!" Prompto whispered with a laugh. But even though they were both the most important people of the day, nobody paid any attention to them.

"Oh, someone should try to stop us,” answered Noctis playfully.

But the fact was that everyone was so busy talking on the phone and organizing that nobody realised what happened. The tailor had just left and Prompto and Noctis could actually take their suits and leave the apartment. Ignis stared out of the window while he was on the phone, Gladio had gone into the bedroom to make his phone call and Prompto and Noctis couldn't help laughing as they each ran down the stairs with their suits in their arms.

It felt like they were going to run away together, their only goal was marriage.

Noctis knew all the secret entrances to the palace. It was much easier than someone would think to get into an empty guest room unnoticed, at least for someone who grew up there. Noctis had left his smartphone in his apartment and Prompto used his phone to call Cindy, who had told him some time ago that she had started a punk rock band. Neither Noctis nor Prompto had ever heard them play, but they knew they would like it far better than a boring orchestra. Even if Ignis killed them afterwards, it would be worth it.

Noctis couldn't describe how much fun they had the next few hours. After Cindy said yes, they turned Prompto’s smartphone off and made sure to dress each other up. Even if they spent most of the time kissing. Prompto had been right though, he was far better than any hairdresser.

They left the room only a few minutes before the wedding ceremony began and went, holding hands, to the large hall from which loud murmurs could already be heard. Their names kept coming up. Of course it was Ignis who was already waiting for them in the hallway. He had dressed himself up nicely, but looked so stressed as if he was about to pass out.

Gladio stood next to Ignis and Noctis was sure that he could see amusement on the Shield's face.

"Where have you been? And who are these people?" Ignis almost hissed his words as he pointed to Cindy and her band who were setting up their instruments across the room.

"We got ready. And that's the band for the wedding," Prompto spoke his answer cheerfully.  Ignis opened his mouth to respond, but before he could say anything Noctis intervened, "Or did you find a new orchestra in the meantime? Then of course we'll send them home."

Ignis didn't reply to those words and Gladio put his hand on his shoulders and said with a laugh, "Oh Iggy, It’s too late now anyway. Let's enjoy the wedding."

Those words were the last Noctis heard before they entered the room and were greeted with applause as the wedding march started moments later. The punk rock version of it, of course.

Noctis and Prompto could only say in retrospect that their wedding was absolutely perfect for them.

The next morning, a headline in particular adorned the newspapers:

"Royal wedding exceeds expectations and enchants foreign guests with a mixture of tradition and modernity.”
