Got Salt?

Summary:

Dean tries playing match maker by inviting Reader on a local Salt&Burn.

Notes:

This is based on a completely true story...I had bought to much pink salt at the store.

Work Text:

Sitting wrapped in a blanket on the couch with my feet curled under me watching TV I hear my phone ding with a text message. Curious as to who would be messaging me at such a late hour I pick it up and unlock the screen. Surprisingly enough it was a text from one Dean Winchester.

Dean: Hey killer whatcha doin?

Intrigued by the seemingly random text from the eldest Winchester brother I mulled over my response.

Me: nothing... this isn’t a booty call is it?

Dean: What?! No!

There was a minute before another text came through.

Dean: okay…it’s not a booty call… for me.

Dean: Sometimes little brothers just need a little help.

Chuckling at I responded back quickly.

Me: Oh yeah?

Dean: Never mind. Booty call or not that’s not why I’m texting you. We’re working a job not far from you. You want in?

Interested and excited at the chance to see Sam again I hedged my bets

Me- what are we hunting?

Dean- a couple ghosts. We already know where they are buried just need help with the salt and burn.

Me- Do I have to dig a hole?

I am so not in the mood to do any digging tonight.

Dean- nope best part they are all in a crypt

Me- Sweet. Do I have to change out of my pajama pants?

Dean: I mean I guess not…

Me: Double sweet. I’ll be there. Shoot me the address.

Getting off the couch and stretching my muscles out I get his reply with the address of the cemetery. Followed by one more text.

Dean: BYOS. Bring your own salt.

Laughing I go to put my hair up and a bra on. I may be ready to fight ghosts in my baggy plaid sleep pants but no way am I going in there with the girls doing their own thing.

Finished with my minimal hunting preparations I go and grab the biggest container of salt I had on hand and my shotgun full of salt rounds. Slipping on cowboy boots before walking out the door, I was a sight to behold. Messy hair piled on top of my head, baggy plaid sleep pants stuffed into dusty cowboy boots, and an old cinco de mayo t-shirt with a sketch of a margarita and the words, ‘Got salt?’ across it. Snickering at my own joke I grab the truck keys and head out to meet the boys.

As I pull in my headlights land on the black Impala already parked there. Parking beside the old chevy I climb out of my truck.

Sam and Dean both stood at the open trunk preparing for the impending hunt.

Dean saunters over taking in my appearance.

“ When I said booty call I hoped that would inspire you to at least have on yoga pants.” he comments low enough just for my ears to hear.

“ Dude its one o’clock  in the morning, sexy is not on the menu anymore.”

Grunting he walks back to his trunk and I follow behind. Sam looked up as I approach and smiles pleasantly.

“ Nice shirt. Very appropriate.” He chuckles looking down and reading the words across my chest. “ You know I don’t think I’ve seen you out of a dress suit.”

Feeling just a touch self conscious at his ever attentive observations I adjusted my bun shrugging,

“ These pants are peak comfort and gives full range of motion.”

Then with a very serious face he replies shyly,

“ I like the look. You look relaxed.”

Ducking my head and thanking him Dean claps his hands together.

“Alright if you two crazy kids are done doing your mating dance can we do some salting and burning?”

Rolling my eyes and mutter “you invited ME” I began to walk behind the ever impatient eldest Winchester. The younger Winchester walks beside me carrying his own bag of hunting supplies.

Walking in silence for a few strides I decide to break it,

“So whats the story on this particular haunting?”

Visibly perking up at the question Sam said, “ So get this, Its a whole family of ghosts. Mom, dad, and a pair of kids. From what I could find during my research dad killed mom and when the kids discovered him over their murdered mother he turned around and murdered both of them. Then killed himself.”

“Woah thats heavy.” I say as a pick my way around the gravestones.

Up a ahead I hear Dean mutter not so under his breathe.” Way to Woo the ladies little brother.”

Rolling his eyes at his brother Sam grabs my elbow to steady me as I stumbled over uneven graveyard dirt. I smile shyly in thanks when he released his grip.

“Thanks sometimes I’m all uncoordinated limbs.”

Giving me a lopsided smile and gesturing with long arms at his equally long legs he says,

“You know I wouldn’t know about that. I’m so petite.”

Loving this less serious more playful Sam I lightly smack his arm saying,

“Oh man I didn’t even think.  It must be really hard on you being so little!”

“It’s a real disadvantage. Never able to reach top shelves. Or change light bulbs without a ladder.”

Bumping shoulders playfully we chatted comfortably before finally reaching the crypt.

“Start on the father?” Dean asked pointing to the separate capsules in the crypt with his crowbar.

Sam and I both shrug in agreement.

Dean pulls the end cap off with the crowbar, slides the casket out and opens it. Setting his bag down Sam opens it and get out the lighter fluid and salt. He sprinkles both onto the remains and lights a motel match book and tosses it in. The fire ignites and the rooms temperature drops. As if the fire was sucking the very heat out of the space.

“Oh no” I said as the boys and I look at each other with wide eyes. Then as if choreographed we all scramble to open the remaining burial chambers.

“What the hell is going on?!” Dean yells as a breeze begins to pick up and our flash lights flicker.

“No idea.” Sam says as he opens the mother’s casket. Suddenly there is a loud scream of’NO!’.

They all look and see a wavering image of a woman with her hand out stretched. Sam goes to sprinkle the lighter fluid and salt again when the spectral woman suddenly appears right beside him and throws him into the wall.

I run over to check that Sam was okay.  Dean reaches for his own matchbook, lighting it he tosses it in as the ghost woman screams, “No stop you don’t—“

Before she could finish however she was gone in a flash.

Turning my focus back to Sam I squat down in front of him and place my hands on either side of his face. Looking him in the eyes to make sure his pupil response was good I ask,

“Are you okay? She really threw your petite ass.”

Grimacing slightly he nods saying

“I’m tougher than I look.”

With one last look at his face I release him and stand up. Offering my hand I help him to his feet. While he dusts himself off I turn to see Dean working on opening the last two capsules. Just as he successfully pries the second stone off we all hear the ominous sound of children laughing.

“Oh that’s NEVER a good sound.”

Moving even quicker than before Dean squirts the remaining lighter fluid onto the two small remains. We all hear the laugher getting closer.  Looking around for any signs of the ghost children we are all suddenly thrown backwards in separate directions.

Dean recovered the quickest and was back over to the caskets in no time. Sam and I were thrown farther and were therefore much slower to get up.

“Crap I need salt. I’m out. Did you bring any?” He asked me in a hurry.

“ Yeah hang on.” I crawl over to my bag that was several feet from me on the floor. Rummaging through its contents quickly I found my container of salt and toss it in Dean’s direction. “ Heads up!”

He catches the flying container no problem and goes to start pouring it when he gets a glimpse of the salt inside.

“What the fuck? Pink salt?!” He said with equal parts incredulity and disgust. Sam climbs to his feet and moves to help me up when he is pushed back yet again by invisible forces. God the man was going through it tonight.

Yelling now to be heard over the children’s laughter and Sam’s cursing I reply,

“What?! It was BYOS!”

“Yeah but that doesn’t mean you can bring pink.”

“They sell it in bulk at Costco and I accidentally bought to much. NOW.USE.THE.DAMN.SALT!”

Dean and I hear a bang from somewhere in Sam’s direction and a faint groaning,

“ Use the salt you big baby.”

Grabbing the box from Dean I sprinkle the final two remains of the night and pull out my own matchbox to light them up. As Sam struggles to his feet for the last time the sound of children’s laughter fade with a woosh.

Leaning his back against the wall and sagging slightly Sam catches his breath while looking at his brother with bewilderment.

“Dude, seriously?”

“What?! It ain’t right.”

I roll my eyes at Dean’s aversion to the color pink and looking over at a slightly battered Sam I ask,

“ You good over there?”

“Oh yeah I’m great. Nothing like being thrown around by some ghost kids.”

“Was it just me or did those kids seem distinctly evil? And not at all victims?”

The boys both make simultaneous sounds of agreement.

“Guess research doesn’t always prepare you, eh little brother?” Dean pokes at Sam as they began to pack up they’re remaining supplies.

Grunting at his brother with his head down I do my best to catch his eye to give him a wink as I interject,

“ I don’t know about that. There is a lot of interesting and useful things you can learn from research.” I grin wickedly at Dean and playfully bump shoulders with Sam. Sam tries to hide his snicker as Dean narrows his eyes at the both of us.

“ I don’t know if I like you two ganging up on me.”

Laughing as we file out of the crypt I walk between the two men and reach up and casually sling one arm over each brothers shoulders as we head back to the parking lot.

“ You two really know how to treat a girl to an exciting evening; But, next time lets just do dinner.”

I give them both a half hug that brings them closer to my level before releasing them and moving to walk in front. I smile like a school girl when I hear Dean say,“ Dude, go get the girl.” before I walked out of hearing range.

All and all its been a good night.
