Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Maya was looking outside the window car, admiring the side road full of trees. She always likes trees, they look so strong and green and fresh. That was mostly the reason why she loved to go camping. The feeling of freedom without judgment from others, just her and the trees.

She felt something squeezing her left hand. She looked away from the view outside to see another thing that she loved, Carina. Carina never failed to amaze Maya. Even when she's driving, she looked so beautiful. Her eyes were fixed to the road ahead, a small smile on her face.

"Why are you staring?" Carina asked, her eyes still focused on the road ahead.

"What? Can I enjoy a beautiful view?" Maya teasingly replied with a smirk, still staring intently.

Carina laughed and shook her head, "You are unbelievable."

Yet Maya did not divert her eyes, still looking at her girlfriend. She was so happy right now. After last year, with her father, the pandemic, Andrew's death, and Carina's immigration status, it felt like they did not have any time to rest. Now they could. After the restriction has been lifted slowly and people now can go out of town without the fear of catching a virus, they immediately took the time for a very needed vacation. Though they couldn't get many days, only four days, they opted to go somewhere close.

"I'm so happy we can do this again," Maya said, breaking the silence. She smiled at the thought of spending a full four days with Carina. If someone said to a thirteen-year-old-Maya that in the future she would find someone that made her this happy and made her go for a vacation leaving her work behind, she would laugh. She was so strange about the concept of love and relationship and rest that she never imagined even having one of those, let alone all of those. Yet, here she was with a girlfriend of almost 2 years, the happiest she had ever been.

"Me too," Carina looked away from the road to see the blonde for a second with a genuine smile. "after last year, it was just.. too much. I needed this."

"Yeah." That got Maya to think back to last year. How much their relationship has grown. It wasn't easy for the both of them, yet here they are, stronger than they have ever been. Maya can't help but to be proud of herself. There was so many time she could ruin this relationship, but she sucked it up and tried so hard to save the most important thing in her life. She knew that sometimes she messed up things, made it so easy for Carina to just leave her, but Carina never gave up. Carina kept coming back and put Maya-broken-self together. And for that Maya is so grateful.

They fell into a comfortable silence, enjoying the music from the radio. Maya kept picturing the images of the following days, how the vacation would become. She imagined the pool and the sun, and the wine, and the many many wonderful sexes. But most importantly, the joy and warmth feeling of spending time with Carina.

"I think this should be a yearly thing, you know?" It was more like a statement than a question, but Maya felt hesitant, not knowing if Carina really up for this kind of thing.

"What? No!" Carina's answer made Maya's heart skipped a beat, a slight frown formed her face but was immediately replaced by a big grin when Carina continued her answer, "I think it should be monthly."

"You need to stop messing with my heart, I thought Doctor's job is to fix a heart attack, not causing one."

Carina looked at Maya with a grin like a little girl, so cute and beautiful. "I like teasing you, it made your eyes sparkle after. I love them." Carina stated matter-of-factly.

Maya smiled and blushed, tried to think of a witty comeback, but nothing came out. It rarely happened to her, not knowing what to say, especially something flirty. But Carina never failed to make her speechless. But instead of feeling frustrated, she loved it, more than anything. Carina just knows what to say every time, to make her feel calmed and wanted and loved.

They fell into another comfortable silence, hands on top of each other's, never letting go. Maya drew a circle to Carina's backhand and Carina squeezing Maya's once in a while.

"Why we have to take this road? It's so empty." Carina asked, face confused of the decision her girlfriend made.

"Would you rather drive in Seattle's traffic? It could take us 2 hours longer." Maya said incredulously.

"Yeah, you're right. I am tired of yelling at the stupida that drive inproperly. They only think of themselves."

"IM-properly."

"IMproperly," Carina repeated it multiple times so she could remember it the next time she wanted to use the word.

"Hmm, you are right,  they are stupid." Maya agreed, having to know it the hard. There were so many calls that she had faced throughout her career to confirm it.

As if the nature heard them, there was a loud voice that came from, what they assumed, a sport car behind them. The car was in a full speed, maybe 140mph, swirling and cutting their car off. Carina a little bit startled, slowing down the car. "See?"

Not long after another sport car came and did the same thing as the first one. But somehow it's tire slipped and ended up bumped the front of Carina's Porsche. The sport car continued driving while Carina tried to take control of the car, but the bump was hard enough, she failed and the car rolled for what seemed like a hundred times, and stopped upside down.
And all turned dark.

-

Maya opened her eyes with a gasp. Confused of her surroundings, her head was pounding and every inch of her body felt like it burned form inside out. She didn't know what was happening for a minute, until the memory came crushing, the drive, the sport car, the bump, and Carina. Where is Carina?

She frantically looked around and found the brunette on the driver seat, hands falling on top of her head, blood coming down her face and unconscious. Maya panicked and tried to reach for her.

"Carina, baby, wake up." She yelled and tried to yanked Carina, hoping the brunette will wake up soon.

She reached Carina's hand to try to find a pulse, but her breath was too loud, and the pounding in her head didn't help. She started to be more panic, now trying to find the pulse on her neck.

"Come on! Come on! Stay with me baby." Maya begged, tears started to come down her face. But nothing. She couldn't feel any pulse, her head was to distracting for her to hear anything. Her body started to trembled, either from the panic that threaten to come and the pain she felt.

"Ok, get yourself  together Maya, come on! Think! Think! Think!" She closed her eyes, tried to even out her breathing and switch to captain mode, trying to find a better way to save Carina.

After a couple of seconds, she started to calm a little bit and list all the things she should do. The first thing she had to do, call someone. She reached  for her pocket and thank herself for not putting  it on her backpack behind. She dialled 911 immediately.

"You have reached 911 emergency services. All of our operators are busy. Please hold the line."

"Shit shit shit! Oh my God no no." Maya kept cursing to the air, not knowing what to do next. Then she remembered her team and immediately called station 19's front desk. Not knowing if her team were on a call or not.

"Station 19, this is Montgomery."

"Travis.." Maya said, her voice hoarse, hoping he would notice who she was.

"Maya? Aren't you on vacation? 5 minutes into vacation and you've already call work? Relax Maya." Travis said, failed to read Maya's tone.

"Travis help, we got..ugh..into an accident. Shortcut to LA. Hurry." Maya spilled, not interested to go into any detail as her body was screaming with pain.

"What?" Travis squealed and froze hearing the hurt from Maya.

"Travis.. hurry, Carina. "

"Wait up Maya, we're coming."

Upon hearing the answer, Maya put down the phone and tried to reach for the dashboard, looking for something  that could cut her seatbelt. Thanking whoever put a first aid kid with a scissor in the glove compartment in front of her legs. She immediately cut her seatbelt and struggled to come out from the car. She ran to the other side of the car, ignoring the excruciating pain from her body, not knowing where it came from exactly. Not caring about that as Carina was her main focus at the moment. She broke the rest of the window car carefully for it to not hitting Carina. She searched for the brunette neck and hoping for any pulse. She felt a little movement from Carina's neck, barely, but still there. She then put her hand in front of her nose and feel a warm breath from it.

"Okay okay good, keep breathing for me, baby. My team will be here soon and they would set you free and then we're still gonna make it to LA, okay? Just keep breathing, Carina."

Maya started to spiral but shook her head so hard to prevent that for getting worse. She repeatedly checkin Carina's pulse and breathing to make sure she's still alive. But as the time passed by, her pulse started to fade away and her breathing went shallow. She couldn't free Carina yet, both because Carina's leg was pinned and she didn't have the tool to treat her injury after. She knew that Carina needed to be set free as soon as posible, crush syndrom is really dangerous. Maya felt useless, there was nothing she could do but wait.

"No Carina please no." Carina's pulse and breathing slowly faded out until its gone. Maya desperately tried to give Carina cpr, but failed because of the weird angel, and she felt something burning in her upper left hand, but she didn't care. Keep trying to do anything she could thing of.

"Come on, 19!" Maya hissed desperately.

It felt like hours has came by. Maya miserably kept trying to do a cpr, but deep down she knew that wouldn't help anything. Tears fell freely from her eyes. She knew what was happening.

Maya fell into her knees and sat beside the car. Staring blankly towards the void. Giving up on the world.
