College

Summary:

Keefe stared out the window before returning to the confused customer in front of him.

"No rain today."

Sophie sighed, "Yeah..."

"So what are you doing here?"

Notes:

Hi! I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to say here!
This part is almost twice as long, but since it's essentially a written conversation, it reads weirdly. I'm hoping I get better as I go on, so yeah. Anyway, I hope you like it!

Work Text:

Keefe stared out the window before returning to the confused customer in front of him.

"No rain today."

Sophie sighed, "Yeah..."

"So what are you doing here?"

"Wouldn't you like to know, weather boy?"

"Ooh! Someone's angry!"

"Whatever. I'm leaving, I can tell when I'm not wanted," she joked.

"Uh huh," he nodded. "Sure you are. You're gonna leave without coffee."

He flinched as her eyes narrowed.

"What makes you say that?"

"Maybe because both times you've come here, it's been with a bookbag, cursing under your breath, looking like you haven't slept in a week or two. You're a college student who's taken too many classes for their own good."

She blinked.
"You got all of that from those three things?"

"Yeah," he shrugged, "We're close to campus, and I behave the exact same way  each time I come in to work."

"Speaking of which, shouldn't you be getting back to your job?"

He smirked, "You're not getting rid of me that easily. Besides, it's slow today. I can afford to annoy you for a few more minutes!"

"You don't get paid to talk to customers," she shot back, making him laugh.

"Sophie, I take people's orders!"

"Slacker."

He leaned against the wall, "That I most definitely am. Anyway, what year are you in?"

"Uh. What?"

"College! You are a student, aren't you?"

"Oh! Yeah. I'm a freshman-"

"I'm older than you!"

"-And you sound like a five year old."

"Mentally I am five."

Sophie rolled her eyes, "What year are you in?"

"I'm a junior," he folded his arms.

She grinned, "You might as well be using a walking stick."

Putting a hand over his heart, Keefe made a dramatic show of falling to the ground, "Using my own tricks against me! Preposterous!"

"I'm a quick learner," she winked.

He wiped away a fake tear.
"They grow up so fast."

"Mhm. Although I actually missed a year of school, so technically I'm a year behind..." She admitted.

"And now you're taking every course you can to make up for it?"

"I'm taking every course I can because they all sounded awesome."

"Nerd."

"I'm sorry, didn't you imply that you are also taking every class you can?"

He raised his arms, "You caught me. I am taking more classes than I should. It's not out of choice though-"

"What do you mean it's not-"

"-Hey! I actually skipped a grade! So we might just be the same age!" He announced.

Even though she wasn't sure what his previous statement had meant, she decided to humor him.
"Wait. Does that mean I'm old or you're young?"

"Honestly, I'm not sure..."

As he continued to ramble, Sophie found her eyes drooping, and her mind drifting off to a land far from the conversation she was having.

"-Hey. Sophie? Earth to Sophie? Are you there?" Keefe waved a hand in front of her face, jerking her back to reality.

"Yeah!?"

"Damn, no need to shout."

"Sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"It might be a good idea for you to go get some sleep," he urged.

"Like you said earlier, I'm not leaving without coffee." She insisted.

He sighed, "Okay, pick your poison."
"Same as last time?"

"And you expect me to remember that because?"

"You literally have it written down?" she pointed to his notebook.

"I don't like you-"

"As long as you're getting me the coffee I don't particularly care," she started out, but he was already walking away.

When he returned, it was with her order- in a takeout cup.
"Can't have you falling asleep on the counter," he reasoned.

"Thanks," she smiled as she paid and left her seat. "It was nice talking to you."

"She says, walking away."

Sophie laughed, "Like we both don't know I'll be back soon enough."
