Work Text:
Chigasaki hands him something at 3am.
"I was going to give you this tomorrow - or well, later, I guess - but since I'm still awake," he gestures at his monitor, taken out of sleep mode a second too late for Chikage to not have noticed, "I figure I should give it you now."
The gift is hard to see in the dim light, but the texture is familiar. It weighs heavy on Chikage.
"I presume it came in packaging that would have told me what it is," he says, like he doesn't already know, "but since you've so handily removed it, would you mind explaining?"
Chigasaki leans on the sofa. "It's a weighted blanket. You rarely sleep as is, so may as well make sure it's a good sleep."
"What makes you think I need one of these?"
"...Pretty sure you don't need to be a specific type of person for it to help." He stifles a yawn. "But also Hisoka-san has one, and you tend to be similar in weird ways." A pause, then he waves his hand around. "Me too. Like, I also have one, and I also think we're similar in... certain ways."
"Neither of those comparisons are very flattering."
"Yeah, you know me, always trying to butter you up."
"My my, really? I had no idea you-"
"Oooooooh my god, please, just-" Chigasaki drags a hand down his face. "Just... try it, at least?"
"But it's heavier." April had protested. "What if I need to get up quick?"
"You won't." August assured him, sitting on the edge of the bed. "Every second counts on a mission, but not here. I want you to be able to make yourself comfortable."
"Why do you think it'll make me comfortable?"
August hummed. "Let's call it intuition, for the most part. But I've also noticed you sleep better when I'm with you."
April pouted. "That's not because you're squeezing me, it's because you're you."
August laughed, and ruffled his hair. "Of course, of course, I love you too, April. But it might partly be the pressure, and I can't always sleep at the same time as you, much as I'd like too. So... will you at least try it tonight? For me?"
"...I suppose I may as well." Chikage finally answers. Then- "I have nothing to worry about here, after all."
If Chigasaki finds that comment weird, he doesn't show it, giving a big yawn. "Cool. That's- good."
"Do you want to-" Chikage starts, then pauses briefly, "-to be getting to bed yourself? You seem rather tired."
"And whose fault is that...?" Chigasaki grumbles, but goes to climb his ladder anyway. Chikage shuts off his monitor for him.
He then immediately regrets that, having to change into sleepwear in the dark, but the faint moonlight from the window makes it a bit easier.
Then, he climbs into his own bed, pushing his usual blanket to the side in favour of the weighted one. Even though Hisoka has one, even though Chigasaki has one, even though he'd seen them on laundry days, Chikage had never taken his out from the hideout. He's not quite sure why. Perhaps he's even worse at accepting help than he thought, if an inanimate object's comfort makes him so unsure.
August was the only person he could properly accept help from. He didn't (always) question if he deserved to accept it, and didn't feel weak for doing so.
The blanket is nice. It... grounds him a bit. He knows it does. He kind of feels like an idiot for not going back for his before - he knows August wants him to be happy, so at the very least, he should allow himself the amount of comfort he had back then.
He knows, too, that the comfort he has now is actually more than he's had before. But it's nice to not feel bad about that, even if only for a bit.
