Work Text:
Matt rolled over and opened his eyes to the darkness, his sight slowly adjusting to the ambient light from the street outside, just beyond the window. He rested his hand on the empty spot beside him, blinking away his grogginess until Mello took form, sitting on the foot of the bed staring out into the loneliness of the late hours.
“You okay, Mells?” Matt scooched into a sitting position beneath the sheets, concern heavy on his brow.
“Yeah.” Was all he was given in return.
Matt knew better, knew it was a lie, but every time he tried to venture into the barricaded territory of Mello’s mind he was always met with struggle.
He didn’t want to push him, forcing him into a situation that would just make it worse, but he didn’t want Mello to feel alone…
Because he wasn’t.
Taking the blanket he slept beneath with him, Matt got up and took a seat beside Mello, wrapping the blanket around both of them. Mello didn’t fight it, didn’t shy away from the offered comfort, but never said a word, keeping his torturous secrets inside.
“Hey Mells?” Matt spoke softly, a hush in the darkness of their room.
Mello dragged his eyes to look at him. “Yeah?”
“What keeps you up at night?”
The look on Mello’s face softened just a hint. “Heh, you got a minute?”
Matt turned to face him, making sure nothing could distract him from Mello. “For you? I got all night.”
