Nightmares of Your Inner Demons

Summary:

Cas has nightmares that wake him from a deep sleep that he shouldn't wake up from...

Work Text:

Cas was trapped in an angel trap. He had been chasting Dean and now he had found him except Dean wasn’t himself anymore.

“Dean,” Cas said looking upon him. Seeing his demon form was strange for Cas because it wasn’t how he normally saw Dean. He had always seen his human form and now he was seeing another version of Dean.

“Castiel, Why are you here?” Dean said.

“There was someone I needed to save,” Cas told him.

“You can’t save me,” Dean told him grinning.

“I can try to save you though,” Cas told him.

“Why would an angel want to save a demon so bad?” Dean asked Cas. Cas looked at him not knowing how to answer. “Unless the Angel has other reasons for saving a demon,” Dean said, smiling at Cas with his devilish grin. Cas couldn’t say anything as he watched Dean dump water over the trap. It confused Cas but he would have to figure out what Dean was up to when he was free from his trap.

“What is your plan?” Cas asked about the new problem which was Dean.

“I thought you were the one with a plan. You came after me, didn’t you?” Dean said moving close to Cas. Cas moved back. Dean just laughed as he kept moving closer and closer until he had Cas against a wall trapped from escape. Well Cas could escape if he wanted but part of him didn’t want to leave as Dean looked at him as if he had plans for the angel.

“I will bring you back even if it means losing my wings,” Cas said.

“Does it not?” Dean asked. “Don’t you have to fall before you can save the one you love?” The question seemed to surprise Cas as Dean disappeared. Cas awoke with a start. He was alone when he awoke only to find that the door to the bathroom was open and the shower was going. Cas was confused as to who was in the room as he got up to head only for the shower to turn off and Dean to come out not much later in a towel.

“Angel,” Dean said. “You finally decided to wake up.” Cas seemed surprised to see Dean. “I figured you would sleep in after the night before.”

“The night before?” Cas asked.

“Cas you do know you are human now and things like that make you tired,” Dean said sitting down beside him. “I know I might not be like you anymore but I still remember what it's like.”

“What's it like?” Cas asked. Dean’s eyes turned black for a second before he got up and turned around seeing his attacker away from them. Cas moved back against the headboard. He couldn’t escape. Dean moved closer as he went to kiss Cas, but Cas slipped by him trying to get away from the demon that now consumed Dean. He saw Dean get irritated.

“I thought you were done running from me, Castiel,” Dean said before he used his abilities and threw Cas into the wall. It became black as Cas felt black surround him as he woke to the world being black.

“I want you to go back to sleep,” a voice called out. The darkness was surrounding him. He couldn’t stop the nightmares and he didn’t want to sleep while they were there to haunt him. He looked at the darkness as a person came. His Dean was standing there looking at him.

“Dean,” Cas said.

“No, I just figured you would sleep when you saw your precious human again and knew he was alright back on Earth,” the being said. Cas remembered the empty. He remembered being brought back to this place after saving Dean’s life.

“I will not fall back to sleep,” Cas said. The empty seemed annoyed. He had seen the face on Dean before but it felt wrong on the empty.

“You either go to sleep or I will have to punish you,” the empty said.

“Then punish me because I would rather live in a world without Dean Winchester than watch Dean become a demon over and over in my sleep,” Cas told the empty.

“Then you will get your wish,” the empty said snapping. Before Cas knew it, he was in the bunker and it was empty. Cas looked around for a while. He decided to try calling Dean but that led nowhere as well.

“He isn’t here,” a voice finally said. Cas turned to see Jack. Jack looked at Cas like he held the world.

“Where is he?” Cas asked, needing to know.

“Killed on a hunting trip. Sam left not long after that,” Jack told him.

“The empty gave me what I wished for,” Cas said after a bit knowing that it was better than having dreams of a demon version of Dean.

“And what was that?” Jack asked.

“To live in a world without Dean instead of sleeping in a world where I have nightmares about Dean becoming a demon,” Cas told him. Jack seemed to understand. Cas decided to get things back and running so he could begin hunting because if Dean was gone and Sam had left the bunker the amount of hunters were less than before.

Cas knew he needed to sleep, but sleep meant nightmares. So he was focused on his case hoping that would be enough. Still he had fallen asleep cause next thing he knew Dean was carrying him to bed.

“Dean,” Cas said.

“Go back to sleep,” Dean said. “I got you and I’m not letting you go this time.” Cas couldn’t say no and there were no black eyes so he knew that it wasn’t a nightmare yet. Or at least it had no signs as Cas fell asleep in Dean’s arms.

Cas woke to Dean laying next to him asleep. He moved to get up and watched as Dean stayed asleep. He waited but nothing happened. He just stayed asleep. Cas got up and got ready, starting the coffee as Dean finally got up and started making breakfast, not saying a word.

“You want to talk about it?” Dean asked after Cas was staring too much.

“About what?” Cas asked.

“Your death or my death or the empty let you free or Jack bringing me back to be here for you,” Dean said. “Any of those topics work.”

“Jack brought you back?” Cas asked.

“Jack was concerned,” Dean said. “We can talk about the rest later though. For now how about we get some food for you and focus on getting you back to health.” Cas was grateful but if later Dean got hit by some holy water that was just a reassurance that Dean wasn’t the demon that Cas feared.
