Jack and his Dads

Summary:

Jack doesn't understand some things but he is learning. One is Dean and Cas's relationship. Another is the siblings that are MIA.

Work Text:

Dean and Cas both saw Jack as their child. They were researching how to be parents and reading parenting books. Dean was worried he would end up too much like John as well Cas worried about how he wouldn’t be there for Jack like he wasn’t there for Claire. Jack watched them and even asked Claire and Alex who told him that the two were trying to be the perfect dads.

“Aren’t they already my dads?” Jack asked.

“Pretty much so,” Alex said.

“I thought so cause Mom said Cas was pretty much my dad and Dean is dating Cas,” Jack said. Claire spit out her beer as she looked at the boy surprised. Kaia seemed amused by the whole thing as she tapped her girlfriend’s back.

“Did you not know that Dean and Cas were dating?” Kaia said.

“I didn’t,” Alex said, surprised as she watched the two.

“Oh they aren’t actually but they act like a married couple,” Kaia said. Jack was confused. He really thought that they were married. He listened to the others but he figured it was best to ask his dads after all. When he found them sitting in the living room with Jody and Sam, he waited until Sam and Jody walked out to talk about the case while Dean and Cas were supposed to talk with Claire. Jack stopped them knowing they needed to talk.

“Kaia said something about you two not being together,” Jack said. Both were surprised. “Why aren’t my dads together?” Jack had his pouting face.

“Jack,” Dean said, trying to find the words without making Cas realize that he likes him.

“Dean doesn’t feel that way towards me,” Cas said bluntly. Dean froze because he said it that way.

“Cas doesn’t feel that way towards me,” Dean said following Cas' lead.

“No, I do feel that way towards you,” Cas informed Dean.

“Well maybe I feel that way towards you as well,” Dean said.

“Well maybe we are together then,” Cas said before turning to walk out and find Claire. Dean just watched.

“So are you and Cas married now?” Jack asked.

“Not quite but things will be a bit different between us now,” Dean explained. Jack still didn’t understand but he figured he would find out soon.

They were all having dinner when Kaia made a comment about Dean and Cas flirting again. Jack heard her and so did Claire but no one else did.

“Well they are together,” Jack said. Kaia who has just taken a sip spit out her drink as Claire looked at her confused. No one else had heard any part of their conversation.

“What did you say?” Claire asked him.

“What is happening over on that side of the table?” Alex asked them.

“Jack just dropped some news on me,” Kaia said looking at Dean and Cas.

“I’m sure whatever he said can’t be that bad,” Dean said as he gave Kaia a look. Kaia seemed to realize something and smirked.

“He was talking about some hunters that you all know,” Kaia siad.

“We know a lot of hunters,” Dean said. “It's a small community at this point to be honest.”

“I think she is talking about…” Cas started but Dean muttered something to him and he shut up. Sam and Jody were confused as was the rest of the table.

“Now no secrets at the dinner table,” Jody said.

“Kaia and Claire are sneaking into each other's rooms at night,” Alex said grinning at Claire who stuck out her tongue at Alex.

“Dean and Cas are dating,” Kaia siad. Sam choked on his salad as Patience gave Dean the thumbs up as Claire looked between them with shock.

“We knew that,” Jody said before turning to Sam, confused about his reaction.

“No we did not,” Sam said. “How long has this been going on?”

“We are not talking about this at dinner,” Dean said. Jack wanted to point out that they weren’t doing well on the talking thing in the first place but Cas gave him a look not to speak. He looked down at his plate realizing he probably shouldn’t have said anything to Kaia. Claire on the other hand was asking about when their wedding was and if she was going to be in it because she was practically Cas’s daughter.

“If Emma was alive she would be in the wedding too,” Dean said. Dean left as Cas watched confused and Sam looked down at his plate.

“I knew about Ben but who is Emma?” Cas asked.

“Ben was never Cas’s son,” Sam explained.

“Not according to the memories I took from Lisa. Ben was in fact Dean’s son in everything but blood,” Cas told Sam.

“Emma was Dean’s daughter. She died not long after she was born,” Sam explained.

“So I have two siblings that I haven’t met,” Jack said. Cas seemed to realize that Jack was taking this conversation in as well.

“Sometimes we don’t always meet the family we have because we have to let them go before we know them,” Cas explained. Jack looked at Cas and nodded. He still wishes he could meet his siblings but he at least had two amazing fathers to make up for the evil birth father who was struck on destroying the world once and for all every time he showed up.

Maybe it was seeing Dean upset after dinner or maybe he just couldn’t get it out of his mind but he started thinking about the other two siblings and decided to find them. Only problem is that neither had the Winchester name according to birth records or if they were special they weren’t easy to find. He knew he was going to have to ask Sam.

“So about Emma and Ben,” Jack said.

“Emma is dead,” Sam said.

“Yeah but what was her last name?” Jack asked.

“Winchester,” Sam said. Jack took that information in figuring he could just find her in heaven then.

“What about Ben?” Jack asked.

“Ben Braeden lives with his mom Lisa in Indiana last time I checked. He doesn’t remember Dean though and Lisa doesn’t either. It’s better that way Jack,” Sam said. “Dean has been a dad once before but he never realized how much he loves being a father until you became a son to him. He loves you like a son Jack and Emma and Ben didn’t get to have Dean as a dad but Dean will always love them. He cares about them still but having you as a son makes up for all he lost when he lost those two kids. You are an amazing kid, Jack and you should be proud that you have two wonderful fathers,” Sam said. Jack nodded as he looked at his uncle and debated what to say next but stopped knowing that whatever he said wouldn’t be right. He would have to do something with his dad that would make up for missing time with his siblings.

Jack found Dean the next morning with Cas making breakfast as Cas held on to him.

“Dean, can I help you wash Baby today?” Jack asked.

“Yes,” Dean said, surprised.

“I just want to learn more about cars from someone who knows a lot and it would be helpful for when I am older and have my driver’s licenses,” Jack told him. Cas smiled as he mentioned it being a great bonding activity for the two of them. Jack thought more of how it would be something Dean would probably have done with his other two kids. After breakfast, Dean told him what soaps to use and even let him help wax the impala when it came to that time. Dean seemed to smile as he talked and Jack could sense Cas’s presence with a camera that Jack saw as he watched the two have fun while still taking time seriously with caring for Dean’s car. Cas pulled him aside later and thanked him for cheering Dean up.

“You can’t replace the other two but you can make memories with us and Dean enjoys spending time with you, Son,” Cas said. Jack nodded as he hugged one of his fathers glad to be safe with his family.
