Mary might have just been getting used to having her boys back and remeeting them but she already could tell that Cas was part of the family and would be like another son to her. He was just like Dean was with being innocent and naive to certain things but he also was charming and cared about humanity like her mother had. Dean had got his name from her mother. Deana Campbell was a hunter just like Samuel was and Mary never wanted that for her boys. Dean and Sam shouldn’t have been hunters but now her sons were hunters and she couldn’t change that. Especially with Dean who had been through the most by the way he flinched when John was mentioned. She knew how John could be and yet she left the boys with their father. Mary couldn’t change what happened to her though. If she could she would have by now. Since she couldn’t stop the past she could try to do something now for her boys. Starting with getting to know what happened. Dean had told her a lot and Sam hadn’t told her everything. Dean seemed to see her as this perfect mother but she knew she was never a good mother for her sons. Especially to Dean as she lied to him more times then she could count. Starting with home cooked meals when he was younger. It surprised her how domestic her son could be and she figured in another life he would have settled down. Probably with Cas based on how they both kept staring at each other and looking like they wanted something more. She smiled glad that her son had found someone she would have approved of.

Cas was sitting down reading a book for a hunt so it was just Mary and Cas. She knew it was weird to consider him like a son when he was older than her but she did. He was so naive to the world and so innocent. He cared so much for the world and the people in the world that she wanted the best for him just like she wanted the best for Dean and Sam. Even if that meant leaving to find herself because Mary was not who Dean and Sam wanted. Dean wanted his mom to read him night stories and sing him lullabies when he was scared. Sam didn’t ever have a mother. He didn’t remember her and the only parent that Sam had was John. He was a lot like John even if he wouldn’t admit it. Just like how Dean was just like her. Mary could see how similar Dean was to her. He didn’t want this life based on what Sam had said here and there about Lisa and Ben. Dean never said so though but she knew Cas would know better than everyone.
“Dean doesn’t want this life does he?” She asked the angel. Cas was surprised by her question.
“He tried to leave but no one successful leaves this life,” Cas explained.
“Not without your past coming back to haunt you,” Mary added in. Cas seemed to realize she was talking about herself.
“He found out about you being a hunter long before you came back,” Cas explained.
“He told me,” Mary said. “Dean reminds me of my mother. She rarely hunted but she loved to cook. I’m glad he got some of her cooking skills.”
“Dean told me once that Bobby taught him how to cook,” Cas explained.
“Bobby?” Mary asked. Dean had mentioned the name a few times more than John’s name but she had figured it was John’s hunting buddy.
“He was a father figure to the brothers,” Cas explained. “A hunter who taught John some things and would watch the boys occasionally when he was out hunting.”
“Sounds like a man I would have appreciated,” Mary said.
“He was a great man and died a heroic death protecting the boys,” Cas said. Dean never mentioned that either. He glanced over mentioning Bobby altogether but maybe that was to protect her from the type of father John was. John, who was not always the best father but he had tried when they were married. Dean had been too much like her for John to connect to his oldest son. He had hoped for a better relationship with Sam like how Mary was close to his mother.
“I wish John was here to see the man Dean became but I know he would not accept our son for being who he was. He never could connect with Dean even when Dean was a young boy. He always saw Dean as not strong enough. Maybe he wanted to be there too much when his father was gone too much. Whatever it was Dean and John never connected well and it made John annoyed with the boy,” Mary told him.
“He always mentioned his relationship with John was not always the best,” Cas said.
“Well I’m glad he has you now,” Mary said.
“He is a good friend,” Cas said.
“He seems to care about you a lot,” Mary said. Cas looked away.
“We are just good friends. Dean does not like me in that way,” Cas said.
“I think my son cares for you exactly how I think he does. I just hope that he realizes it soon so you two can have your happy ending like you deserve,” Mary told him. Cas muttered something before disappearing off. Mary figured she had some work to do there to convince Cas but she would have to talk to Dean first. Her son needed to know how much her son-in-law cared about him.

Mary heard Dean singing in his room as she went to knock when she heard Cas telling him that the song was beautiful.
“Mom used to sing it to me when I was little,” Dean admitted. “I think she sang it to Sam as well and I would help her.”
“I’m glad you got your mom back. You and her are a lot alike. I can see where you get your caring for the world from,” Cas told Dean.
“I guess having her here has been great. She keeps Sam more occupied too so we can have some quiet,” Dean said. Mary smiled as she walked away knowing what Dean meant and also knowing that his brother did not know the situation. She supported her boys and she would let them take their time to tell her. She was just proud of them and their relationship.
