Work Text:
It was the next day of school. Usually, Luz would wake up before anyone in The Owl House, dress up in her Hexside uniform, have her breakfast, and then wait for Eda to take her to school.
But not today. Eda was the one to wake up Luz. She barely had anything for breakfast and she insisted on walking to school.
The reason? Well.
The events of Saturday still spiraled in Luz’s head. And she needed more time to think about them.
The moments they experienced at the Library, the way Amity looked with her new hair, the kiss.
For a good while, Luz thought she had imagined the kiss, but no. It was real.
She had spent the last 36 hours or something delving into the implications of what would happen.
From what Eda had said, Amity felt something for Luz. And Luz felt something for Amity. It was supposed to be easy now.
They talk their feelings out and come out either as still friends or more than friends.
But it wasn’t easy.
Luz never experienced this. Sure, there were plenty of cute girls and boys that she used to have crushes, but none of them even gave her the slight hint of being mutual.
Now she had it. And she didn’t know what to do next.
Luz groaned and hid her face on her hands, being careful of the bandaid on her cheek.
Before she knew it, she saw Hexside in front of her. She didn’t seem to be late. People were talking outside. She swore she saw Edric and Emira with a few older kids. And if Ed and Em were already in school, that meant Amity was too.
Oh cramity, the realization hit Luz’s face.
She studies with Amity.
As she walked up to the school, she saw Gus and Willow on the steps and they both waved as soon as they saw her. Willow still had her arm in a sling and a few bruises, but she seemed to be doing okay. Gus looked normal physically, but he looked tired. Luz felt a tinge of guilt. She was so concentrated on her own dilemma, that she didn’t even check on Gus. She didn’t know what happened to Bria, Gavin, Angmar, or even Mattholomule.
“Hey, Luz!” Willow said cheerfully, despite all her injuries.
“Hey Willow, you feeling better?”
“Hmhm!” she nodded, “I’ll keep the cast and the sling for a few more weeks, but other than that, I feel good as new.”
Luz couldn’t help but smile at Willow’s ability to look at the good side of things.
“What about you, Gus?” Luz said, turning her attention to him, “What happened with those Glandus kids?”
“Eh… They were jerks.”
Luz didn’t ask for more details.
As they walked through the hallways of Hexside, Luz couldn’t help but notice some commotion. Lots of whispers.
“What’s up with everyone?”
“Oh yeah! I completely forgot about that!” Willow said, smacking her forehead, “Before you arrived, I was telling Gus about Amity!”
The name made Luz stop in her tracks.
“Amity?” She echoed the word. What had happened with Amity?
“Yeah! Didn’t you hear?” Gus asked.
“What I didn’t hear?” Luz’s mind was flooded with possibilities. Did she not come to school and people were suspecting? Did anyone see her getting fired by Malphas and was making fun of her? Did she talk about the kiss?
“She dyed her hair!” Willow answered, “It’s the first time I’ve seen her without the green hair in almost four years and, of course, that’s the case to everyone else in school too.”
“Oh.” Luz replied.
So this was it. There was nothing else. This is a school! People would talk about classmates’ appearances. No one knew about what happened on Saturday. No one except Luz and Amity.
She let out a relieved sigh. Everything was fine!
“Oh, hey! There she is!” Willow said, “Hey Amity!”
Luz instinctively looked where Willow was looking
Amity was in front of her locker, putting some books inside it. The purple in her hair looked even better with the morning sun streaming through the windows of the hallways.
A strand of the remaining brown hair fell on her face and she tucked it behind her ear. That made Luz’s face heat up.
Luz thought she would be over Amity’s new look after what happened. She wasn’t.
Then, Amity finally heard Willow’s calls, and Amity’s golden eyes met Luz’s brown.
If Luz didn’t know that the boiling isles were supposed to be going through fall, she would swear they were going through a summer heatwave by the way she was feeling.
Amity seemed to be having the same problem. Her whole face was red, something that Luz saw more than a few times on Saturday.
Luz’s head was screaming for her to not walk towards Amity and make things even weirder. Luz’s feet weren’t answering to her head.
She walked beside Gus and Willow towards Amity.
“Oh, hey guys.” She said, tucking another strand of her hair behind her ear and looking at Luz.
“Amity, your hair looks great!” Willow said, cheerful as ever.
“Oh, thanks. Skara was just asking me where I did it.” Amity replied, looking at the ground and twisting the ends of a few strands between her fingers.
“I think you’re going to start a trend,” Gus replied.
“I hope not! My mom is already mad at me. If suddenly all parents call her just to tell her their children want to dye their hair because of me…” her voice trailed off and Luz had to repress the urge of holding Amity close.
“Hey, we’ll be here to defend you.” Willow said, putting her hand on Amity’s shoulder, “Especially Luz. Isn’t that right, Luz?”
Ah, shoot.
Amity was now looking at Luz.
“Uh, yeah. Sure.” She replied nervously. Finally, she took a deep breath and looked at Amity, “Hey, Amity.”
“Hey, Luz.” She greeted back, avoiding Luz’s eyes and putting another strand of her hair behind her ear.
“I-I forgot to say it on Saturday, but your hair! It… It looks great!” Luz could’ve used a whole dictionary of adjectives to describe Amity’s new appearance, but her brain chose great.
“Well, uh, thank you!” Amity replied, her face red.
They feel into an awkward silence.
“Oh! Gus! Look at the time!” Willow said finally and grabbed Gus by his arm, “We need to head to our classes earlier!”
“We do?”
“Yes, Gus. You know. Because of that.” Luz could swear that she saw Willow’s head nod towards both her and Amity.
“Oh! Right. That!” He chuckled nervously, “Amity, Luz, see you both later!”
And they were gone.
If Willow expected the air between Amity and Luz to clear after she left, she was wrong. Luz continued staring at Amity. And Amity was avoiding Luz’s eyes.
“So…” Luz tried after a few seconds.
“So…?” Amity looked at her, waiting for something.
But Luz didn’t have it.
Finally, Luz said what was on her mind.
“Sorry, this is awkward.” She chuckled lightly.
“You can say that again.” Amity chuckled too, smiling at Luz.
“Did you also have a… messy weekend?”
“I did,” Amity replied, her smile not leaving her face.
But for the fourth time in less than 2 minutes, Luz and Amity fell in a silence that was far from comfortable.
It seemed like they were both doomed to stay in a loop. Awkwardly talk and then silence. This would not work.
But her mom’s words echoed in her head.
Nada funcionará a menos que lo haga funcionar
“Sorry, can we be frank for a quick minute?” Luz said, her voice the most confident ever since seeing Amity in the hallway.
“Yes, definitely.”
“Look, Amity…” Luz took a deep breath, “I don’t want things to be awkward between us.”
“I don’t either, Luz.”
“Then maybe,” Luz stopped and chose her next words carefully, “we let what happened on Saturday for future Amity and Luz to deal with?”
“I would want that.” The witch smiled at Luz.
“Okay, good.” It would be an understatement to say that a huge weight had been lifted off Luz’s back. She smiled at Amity, who was tugging another strand of her hair behind her ear, “But really, you look great with your hair like this.” Luz said once again, not caring that her face was starting to heat up once again.
“I appreciate.” The witch said, looking at Luz with a soft smile, “And, I didn’t even thank you for what you did on Saturday for me. Going through Malphas’ trials just to get my job back… I don’t know anyone else who would do that.”
“What can I say? Grom may be over, but I’m still your fearless champion.” Luz pushed her hair back, showing off her Grom hairstyle with a confident smirk on her face. Then Amity burst out laughing and Luz followed suit.
“Yeah…” the purple-haired witch said once her laughter died down, “I guess you are.”
