Work Text:
Idiot.
We are absolute idiots.
I was staring down at the pregnancy test and I couldn't help the panic that rushed through me. I’m pregnant. I ran from the bathroom to the bedroom to grab my phone. He answers after the first ring.
“Hey babe! What’s up? You usually don’t like to call. Is everything ok?” I was quiet for a second. I knew it was making him anxious because I could hear him fidgeting with his coat.
“Ryu..”
“Yes love?” He sounded uneasy. Of course he would! I’m freaking him out.
“I’m sorry that I’m freaking you out. I was just wanting to know where you wanted to meet up after practice tomorrow?” I clamped my mouth shut hoping not to give away the fact I was lying out of my ass.
“Oh! You really did freak me out there for a second. I thought I did something wrong that I don’t know about. How about the park by my house?”
“I’ll meet you there, love.” I try to force a hint of happiness into my tone. He seems to buy it.
“Love you!”
“Love you too..” I end the call and flop onto my bed and let out a long breath. I have no idea how to tell him.
---
The three positive pregnancy tests were burning a hole in my backpack all day. I instinctually set my hand onto my stomach. There’s a baby there. I shake the thought from my head and continue my way to practice. The only way I could think to tell him was to give them to him and hope he isn’t too pea brained to figure it out.
I entered the gym and set my backpack by one of the benches. Yachi had gotten there early and everything seemed to be set up. I smile, feeling a small weight being lifted. I sit on the bench and watch as the team piles into the gym all having their own conversations. Ryu caught my eye and gave me a wink. I felt the heat rush to my cheeks. I smiled back. I could hear the distinct conversation of Ryu bragging to Noya about it.
Just like how it has been for the past year. Everyone is still under the impression that Ryu is hopelessly pining for me. Ever since I realized my feelings for the doofus, it’s been really hard to react the way I used to and he noticed. Then a couple weeks into my third and his second year, after one of his weekly times of asking me on a date I said yes.
Surprisingly enough, he’s the one who wanted to keep our official relationship a secret. It shocked me but I also understood. He wanted it to stay as it was. He knew that once Noya found out he would stop pretending to flirt. Ryu’s flirting would be, for the most part, ignored. Everything would change and I don’t think Ryu wants it to change yet. I just really like having our relationship being just us and having our time with no one impeding on it.
I watched and jotted down my notes as the boys practiced. I tried to ignore the constant waves of nausea. I have been feeling really bloated lately and have been feeling sick for a while. I had a fever and stayed home from school for a couple days so I thought it was just a bug. But then my brain connected the dots and I realized I haven’t had my period for a while.
The last time Ryu came over was over three months ago. That makes me feel like I am already pretty far into my pregnancy. I would guess over 13 weeks. I look it. After taking the test there wasn’t a doubt in my mind I was pregnant.
Ryu would cast glances over at me and I would pretend not to notice. Like usual. The coach called everyone into a huddle and they started talking about what they could improve on. I set my notepad down and rested my hands on my forehead and took multiple deep breaths.
“Are you alright?” I heard Yachi’s timid voice. I put my hands on my skirt and smoothed it down.
“Of course Hitoka.” I smiled sweetly at her and her scared expression seemed to soften slightly.
“You seemed like you weren’t doing so well. Are you sure you’re ok?” I gave her a firm nod and picked my notepad back up and scanned my notes over and over again. “Want me to get you some water?”
“Sure. I would like some. My water bottle is in my backpack.” I smiled at her as she hurried away and opened my backpack. “Wait! Not that pocket!” she shut the pocket as fast as she opened it. We locked eyes and both exchanged a knowing glance. I mouthed ‘I’ll text you later’ and she gave me a nod. She then opened the correct pocket and handed me my water bottle.
After practice was done I left a couple minutes after Ryu left. It was a quiet and peaceful walk to his neighborhood. I almost forgot about what was happening. I could see him sitting on one of the swings and I saw his face light up when he saw me.
He got up and sprinted at me and engulfed me in a hug and pressed a tender kiss to my lips. “I missed you.” I buried my head in his shoulder and enjoyed his warmth for a little longer.
“I missed you too.” I add when we break apart. “But there’s something I need to tell you and I think you might want to sit down.” Total terror passed over his face.
“You’re not breaking up with me are you?” His voice cracked and he squeezed my hands comfortingly.
I chuckled softly which seemed to calm him down. “No, of course not!” I gave him a chaste kiss on the lips to reassure him. I brought him over to a picnic table and wasted no time. I set the three tests on the table in a line. He stared at them for a whole minute and didn’t say anything.
“I’m gonna be a dad?” I was shocked at how excited he sounded.
“Y-you’re excited?” I asked and he looked up at me with tears in his eyes.
“How could I not be? I’m going to be a father!” I started to cry at the sight of Ryu’s excited tears rolling down his face. I wrapped my arm around his neck and pulled him into a tight comforting hug.
“I’m really excited too.” I whisper against his neck. How could I not be when the only fear I had turned out to be fine.
---
When we parted ways, Ryu said he would confide in Saeko since she was his legal guardian and see what could happen. I sat in bed and the first person I called was my mom.
“Hey my beautiful girl! I miss you.” I smiled. She was my favorite person. “I’m so glad you called because I will hopefully be coming home soon in the next couple weeks! My boss said 5 weeks at most.” I smile.
“That's good news!” my mother was usually gone for around two months or three on long trips. The fact that she only left a couple of days ago is going to come back in the next 5 weeks is insane.
“I’m so happy you called! You missed our call last night. Is everything ok?”
“That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about. I just found out I’m pregnant.” There was silence for a second then I heard her start squealing.
“Are you serious?! I’m so excited! You are going to be an amazing mom princess. I cannot wait to get home so I can shower that baby with all of the presents! That baby has the best grandma. I’m so sorry sweetie I have to go but you better be prepared for so much love when I get home!”
“O-ok! I love you mom. I’ll call you soon.”
“I love you too, my sweet girl!”
I set my phone and stared at the ceiling in awe. I knew my mother was eccentric but that was a reaction I was not expecting.
There was a ding shortly after and I looked and it was from Yachi.
Hitoka
Can you call?
I instantly called her and she picked up right away. “You’re pregnant!” She whisper yelled. I looked over and my clock read 11:13 pm. Her family must be asleep.
“Yeah. I am and before you ask yes, Tanaka is the father.”
“What!” She screamed but she caught herself. “What?!” She repeated but quieter. “I didn’t know you guys were together.”
“We didn’t want anything to change so we kept it a secret but I don’t know how much longer we can keep this secret.”
“That is very true. I just hope everything works out for you.” I smile.
“Both my mom and Ryu are actually very excited about the baby. It makes my stress about the pregnancy just kind of go away.”
“That’s amazing. I’m really happy for you. You and Tanaka. You guys will make amazing parents.”
“Thank you Hitoka. I’m gonna go to sleep but thank you for being there for me.”
“Anytime. Night. Love you.”
“Love you too.”
I set my phone on my side table and allowed myself to take a deep breath. I am now really excited to go to school tomorrow. Maybe even announce my love for Ryu if I was crazy enough.
Of course I wouldn’t do that. I wouldn’t do that without talking to Ryu about it. I know we are going to tell everyone about my pregnancy when my mom gets back from her business trip.
---
My mother returned from her trip after 5 weeks. I was huge. When my mom came in through the door she could believe how pregnant I was. She was talking about how I was pregnant when she left and how she wished she could have gone shopping as early as possible. As promised, she brought back a lot of baby stuff from America. Ryu came over and helped my mother move everything out of the guest bedroom to make room for the crib and everything else.
Being as pregnant as I was I was forced to do clothes duty. I was hanging all of my little baby’s clothes in the closet. Ryu was setting up the crib as my mom sorted all of the baby’s toys into baskets.
“Mom. I definitely think the baby has enough.”
“Do you understand how much stuff I had to put back? I knew for 5 weeks! I had so much time when I wasn’t working to go shopping. I was lucky that customs let me bring it all back.” I sighed happily as I finished hanging up all the clothes.
“Thank you Mom. For all of this.” Her face beamed with happiness.
“Of course sweetheart!” She exclaimed. I looked around and it was done. The crib was set up and against the wall. All the toys were put in their bins and all the decorations were hung on the wall. There was even a big ‘T’ above the crib.
“I thought you were gonna give them the last name Tanaka so I thought it was best to get the ‘T’.” My mom mumbled to Ryu and I couldn’t help but cry. I caressed my growing belly and I could feel them moving around. I grabbed onto their hands and put them against it. Their faces lit up when they felt them moving.
“Well. We better get to practice before Coach kills us. We already skipped morning practice.” We said goodbye to my mom as we made our way to the school gym. We were one of the last ones there and everyone’s eyes were on us.
“Why are you guys so late today. I’ve never known Ryu to skip morning practice.” Noya said.
“I thought I would spend the morning with my beautiful girlfriend.” I rolled my eyes out of habit and everyone laughed and teased him about pining.
“He’s not lying though.” I said softly and the teasing stopped.
“Wait what? You’re serious? You guys are dating?” Hinata asked, peeking from behind Kageyama.
“Since May.” I started as I set my bag down.
“That’s amazing! Congratulations!” Suga cheered and gave me a loving hug.
“That’s amazing dude! Never thought you’d get the girl!” Noya exclaimed.
“I can’t believe you're dating Baldy.” Yamaguchi mumbled. I laughed and that stopped Ryu from biting back.
“Why were you guys late today? And why’s you miss morning practice?” Kageyama asked. I smiled and looked over at Ryu.
“We were busy setting up the baby’s nursery.” He said confidently and caressing the bump that was beginning to look very noticeable.
“The who’s wHat now?!” Coach finally participated in our conversation. “You’re pregnant?” He asked, dumbfounded.
I nodded and everyone erupted with their cheers and questions. I grabbed onto Ryu’s hand and never ended up actually having late night practice.
Over the next couple days, everyone had something to say to the baby or they are desperate to feel the baby move. Everyone but Tsukishima will express their love. When everyone is lost in their own world though, he will come over and sit next to me on the bench and ask to feel the baby move. The first time I wiped a stray tear that fell from his eye. He admitted to me that my pregnancy reminded him of his baby sister that his mother miscarried in her last trimester.
That was the first time Tsukishima had ever opened up to me. Now, after everyone leaves after practice, he always gives me a hug and wishes me good health for me and the baby. After every practice. I’ve now expected it, to a point where Ryu will wait outside the gym for me and pretend not to know what’s going on.
---
There were days when I was at my worst with my pregnancy and Tsuki would come over to my house and help Ryu make me chicken noodle soup. It was the times when they would never teased others because the other people were me and my mom. They were kind and I never noticed how amazing their friendship was.
There was a knock on the door and I opened it to see Tsuki. “Hey. What are you doing here?” I ask letting him inside. When he entered he brought a couple black garbage bags. “What's that?”
He puts the bag down and opens it. “It’s the babystuff my mother had bought. She hates looking at it and it’s just piled up and when she found out about your pregnancy she wanted to help.” I was speechless.
“Thank you so much. This means so much to me. You don’t even know.” I gave him a gentle hug and I was happy that he returned it.
We spent hours going through everything. We laughed and cried and bonded over everything. It took some getting used to but he would start to talk to my belly like Ryu does. The connection he has made with the baby makes my heart melt.
He actually seems happy whenever he’s with the baby.
---
It’s a girl.
I’m going to have a daughter. My mother was ecstatic. She couldn’t stop talking about taking her out for grandma dates and spoiling her with almost anything she could ever ask for.
My baby Yua. This is our one surprise for everyone when she is born. I knew what I was going to name her the day I found out I was having a girl. Ryu couldn’t be more excited. He loved the reason I picked out her name. He tells her stories when he comes over. I will lay down on the couch and he will lay his head next to the bump and tell her everything and anything that comes to his mind.
I am now 36 weeks and I was almost always the center of attention at practice. They call her their baby crow which I am in love with. Any type of sound I make will freak everyone out. Their first panic is if I’m ok or if the baby is ok. This girl has so many uncles that are going to love her to pieces.
After they lost in the quarter finals at nationals, practices seemed to get very chill. Most days everyone would pass the ball around, play small scrimmages, or review their past games. It was mostly time for everyone to wish us 3rd years goodbye. Apparently, Yua was not getting enough attention.
I was bumping the ball around in a circle with Ryu, Yamaguchi, Kageyama, Suga, and Daichi when I felt like I wet myself. The ball fell short and landed right in front of me. An overwhelming pain made my knees buckle. I grasped at my belly and it felt like my organs were being ripped out. “I think I’m in labor.” I managed to get out and Ryu started to freak out.
Coach was, luckily, calm and composed. Heelped me get into his car and he rushed me to the hospital.
---
Ryu sat next to me in the bed and we held each other as we looked at her. Her beautiful face. She had a head full of black hair. She had an iron grip on Ryu’s finger and we just stared at her without saying a word. Her eyes were closed but she was making little sounds that made us believe she was awake. “Yua.” I whispered and her eyes fluttered open and looked at me. Her huge grey eyes looked at everything like she was taking it all in.
“Yeah honey. This is the world you are going to live in.” Ryu whispered and he gently made small circular motions on her hand.
“I’m mommy and this is daddy.” I said and she put her attention back on me. Her eyes closed again and she continued making her little sounds.
“Gosh. She looks exactly like you.” Ryu said, smiling happily. “I cannot believe I made the perfect baby with you.”
“I can.” I said. I turned and gave him a soft kiss. After a minute there was a knock on the door.
“Are you accepting visitors at the moment Mrs.Tanaka?” I smiled at the name.
“Of course. Let them in.” I smiled as I watched everyone push and shove into the room. Arguing who would see the baby first and who would hold the baby first. “Hey.” I said sternly and everyone stopped talking. Tanaka stood up from the bed and I scooted over. “Tsuki, come here.” I said patting the spot next to me.
He looked surprised but walked over and timidly sat down. “It’s a girl?” He asked, pointing to the pink blanket she swaddled in. I nod.
“You wanna know her name.” He looked at me for a second and his hand went up to his mouth and he didn’t stop the tears from falling down his face. Everyone looked at each other confused.
“You didn’t.” He choked on his tears. I nod.
“I did.” I prop her up and lean her to give to him. He instinctually puts his arms out and takes her. He looks down at her sleeping form then back at me. “Meet Yua Tanaka.” He sniffles and looks down at her.
“Thank you.” He struggles to wrap his free arm around me. His hug was short but sweet.
“How do you feel about being one of her godfathers?” His head snaps up to meet Ryu’s gaze.
“You’re not serious.” He looks at me then to Ryu. “I would love to.”
“And you Noya? Do you want to be her other Godfather?”
“What the heck? Of course dude! Is that even a question?” He jumped and he hugged Ryu. I couldn’t stop looking at how Tsuki looked at Yua. For the first time since I met him he has a real genuine smile on his face and I don’t think it is going away any time soon.
---
I waited impatiently at the front door. How long does it take him to choose an outfit for his daughter? I checked my watch every few seconds. I promised we wouldn’t be late this time.
“Ryu darling! Are you coming?” I called but got no answer. “Ryu! Did you get Yua ready?” I called for a second time. “Ryunosuke! We are going to be late!” I called for the last time. I heard hurried steps down the stairs.
“Sorry baby! Yua was getting fussy and wouldn’t get dressed.” He gave me a quick kiss on my cheek and set Yua down on the ground and she whined.
“I can’t wait to see Tsuki!” She sat on the ground so Ryu could put shoes on her.
“I know love. We are going to his game right now.” I handed her her little froggy hat and she excitedly put it on. “How old are you today?” I asked excitedly.
“Six!” She exclaimed holding up six fingers. I nod and give her a big kiss on her cheek. She wiped her hand over her cheek and grabbed my hand and we left for his game.
Yua sat excitedly on Kageyama's lap holding onto Hinata’s hand. “I’m so excited!” Daichi fixed her hat and Suga handed her a sucker in her free hand thinking I didn’t see.
“I know you're excited. You talked about it all the way here!” Ryu said, tickling her softly. She giggled then got really quiet when the teams entered.
“Tsuki!” She screeched and got a lot of people’s attention. She got Ryu’s volume. She waved excitedly and laughed when he waved back.
I truly believe she understands how volleyball works. She gets so into the game that she starts shouting things at the other team.
She gets passed around to so many people. She can never sit with one person for too long. By the end of the game she is just standing on her own cheering for Tsuki. The Sendai Frogs have an overwhelming win and Yua is so excited that she can’t stay still.
When she sees Tsuki she breaks from my grasp and sprints towards him. He hears her happy footsteps in time to catch her when she jumps into his arms. He laughs as she starts talking about how amazing the game was.
“Tsuki! You were amazing! You hit down like bam! and wap! You got it all and it was amazing!” She waved her arms around crazily.
“I think she’s been hanging out with Hinata and Kageyama too much.” He glared at Hinata but there was no intention of hate behind it like in highschool. Hinata playfully stuck his tongue out back and he grabbed Yua from Tsuki and continued to talk about the game in their language.
Suga caught up with us and calmly soothes the baby that was in a sling. Daichi is shortly behind with the other twin in an identical sling. “How are they? Did they get too fussy? Sorry if Yua was loud.” Daichi and Suga got married shortly after their second year in college. Recently they adopted newborn twins from a 15 year old in America.
“Yua was fine! Both Aidan and Nadia are very heavy sleepers. They just woke up and they didn’t really like waking up with a bunch of loud cheering. I smiled down at the beautiful blond haired brown eyed baby girl Suga was holding.
“Come on mama! Let’s go!” Yua impatiently pulled at my hand. We got back to Ryu and I’s place and the kids went to Yua’s room.
Noya and Asahi ended up adopting a 3 year old boy a year ago so he wasn't much younger than Yua.
Hinata and Kageyama picked up their kids from Hinata’s mom’s house. Over the course of three years they adopted two girls and a boy. Now the girls are 5 and 8 and the boy is 11. All the kids see each other as cousins and it melts my heart.
There was a knock on the door and I rushed to get it. When I opened the door I was bombarded by seven crazy kids running past me. “Yua is in her room with some of the others.” I gave up towards the end and smiled at the new guests. Kuroo and Kenma, Bokuto and Akaashi, and Oikawa and Iwaizumi. Three of the crazy kids were Oikawa and Iwaizumi’s, two were Bo and Kaashi’s and the other two were Kuroo and Kenma’s.
“I swear those kids grow a foot every time I see them. Hi!” I smiled and gave each of them a hug as they came inside.
“Everyone is here!” I shouted to the other end of the house and I went into the kitchen to finish dinner.
The sound of everyone visiting made me so happy. I haven’t seen some of these guys since highschool. Yachi sadly couldn’t come today but she did send me a beautiful picture of her and her girlfriend sunbathing in Bali.
My mother came into the kitchen and helped me prepare dinner. “This is going to be a lot of food. Did you see how many youngins are here today?” I tried counting in my head.
“Nine? Right?” She shook her head.
“There are twelve of them packed into Yua’s room.” I laughed.
“No, Kageyama is playing out in the yard with his daughters. His son is in the living room watching Grey’s on his phone. Kenma is playing the Wii with both of his sons. Kuroo is talking with Bo and Kaashi’s daughters in the dining room. So really only the very little ones are in Yua’s room.”
My mom couldn’t hold in her laughter. “That’s still 5 kids in Yua’s room.” She laughed as she turned to wash her hands.
All the children ate at the dinner table or the kitchen island and the adults ate in the living room. We reminisced from high school and talked about Tsuki possibly having a child through surrogacy in the near future.
“I have to give little Yua a sibling.” Tsuki laughed while taking a bite of his food.
“Well, you will have to give her a second sibling then.” I smiled, putting my hand on my stomach. The room erupted in the most joyful cheers. I couldn’t have wished for a better family. Ryu jumped from his seat and spun me around. The smile on his face made me want to make him happy like this for the rest of our lives.
