Hope

Summary:

Luz’s reaction immediately after the kiss. Post episode 5.

Notes:

I LOVED episode 5 so much! And i loved the ending. But i also feel like Luz’s emotions from earlier in the episode are still swirling around, which is making her switch wildly from “THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER” to “I’m making this all up” so i wanted to write about that :) enjoy!

Work Text:

She kissed me she kissed me she kissed me she kissed me-

Luz slid to the ground, unable to hold herself up, staring off into space, unseeing.

Shekissedmeshekissedmeshekissedme-

Luz had never been kissed. Well, she had, but just by Mami or one of her other family members. But that didn’t count- she had never been kissed by a GIRL before. Or a boy, for that matter.

She felt like crying. In a good way.

Calm down, calm down, calm down. It might not mean anything- or it did, obviously did, why would Amity kiss her- just not… Just not what Luz WANTED it to mean.

Luz had seen how Amity acted around her. The blushing, the stammering… the things she did for her… (“Get away from my Luz!”)

But no matter how much Luz might want to allow herself to immerse in the thought that Amity might like her- LIKE her, like-like, she kissed her- focus. Focus- Luz was not going to get her hopes up.

(Too high.)

It seemed like Amity liked her, but… Who could possibly like Luz?

Nobody liked Luz.

That wasn’t quite fair, though. Her mami loved her. Eda liked her, Lilith liked her, King liked her, Gus and Willow liked her…

Since coming to the isles, the list of people who enjoyed Luz’s presence had increased exponentially.

Even so… Luz was weird, and she knew that. Embraced it. But she wasn’t stupid, she knew the kids back at school at home had hated her.

She had been asked out as a joke before.

Multiple times. Sometimes boys would come up to her, talk to her, ask her out, and laugh in her face when she got excited. One time one boy kept up the con long enough to set up a date, and she waited at the location for hours all alone.

Girls did similar things, though instead of asking her out on a date, they would ask to be her friend. This was almost worse. Luz had wanted friends so badly…

Amity wouldn’t do that, Luz reminded herself. Amity was kind.

Too kind?

Was she forcing herself to put up with Luz?

Luz was stupid. Luz did stupid things, she was a bad influence, Amity said so herself.

Even if Amity did like her, for how long would it last? Eventually she would realize she can do better than Luz. Amity was so amazing- pretty and strong and smart and brave.

Luz realized she was still sitting on the Blight’s front lawn. She got up, taking a glance back at the house, waving in case Amity was looking out a window, and began to walk back to the Owl House.

She groaned. Why was she spiraling? She should be happy. And she was- Amity had KISSED her. Kissedherkissedherkissedher-

She had been worried Amity wouldn’t want to speak to her ever again, but Amity had KISSED her.

And- and the rat. She panicked for a moment, worried she had dropped it, but it was still in her hand. It seemed to have fallen asleep. It was kind of cute now that she wasn’t so mad at it. Amity had shown her how to get the rat to… Project? The Boiling Isles were so weird. But the important thing was this might be her key home, to see her mami.

Luz should be thrilled- everything had ended up wonderfully. Better than she could’ve imagined. Why was the stupid pit still in her stomach?

She took some deep breaths. She let herself think about the kiss, for real this time.

It was so wonderful.

She imagined Amity asking her to be girlfriends. What did girlfriends do? Luz didn’t know what the Boiling Isles requirements for dating were. Knowing the way things usually went in this world, dating was actually horrific and deadly.

Well, kissing seemed to be the same, at least.

What if Amity kissed her on the lips-

Luz turned bright red. That would be nice. Hypothetically.

What if they got married? Amity would look so beautiful in a white dress-

Luz cut that thought right off. What happened to not getting her hopes up? Marriage was way too far ahead, even if they did start dating. They were just kids!

Luz resigned herself to researching marriage customs in the Boiling Isles the minute she got home. Just in case… She was invited to a wedding here some time. Obviously.

Amity had kissed her on the cheek. Kissed her. Luz Noceda. Luz Noceda got a kiss from Amity Blight. Luz giggled, high-pitched and flustered.

Amity’s lips were warm. Soft. Gentle. A light peck and they were gone, but even now Luz felt her cheek burning where the contact had happened.

Luz smiled so hard her cheeks hurt.

“Luz,” Luz imagined Amity saying, “I love you.”

Luz stopped walking. The rat woke up, annoyed by the sudden stop, and stiffed her hand.

Luz always had to go and get her hopes up. Every time. And every time, they were crushed. Luz wished so badly she was more realistic, more moderate. Luz was on a cliff, and teetering on the edge, and she couldn’t step away.

Why did Luz have to have such an abundance of hope? The crash wouldn’t hurt so bad if she didn’t go up so high.

Why was she so affected by a stupid kiss? On the cheek, no less. She was pathetic.

But no one had ever kissed her on the cheek before.

And Amity had said “You always have a way of sneaking into people’s hearts.”

Was it so bad to have a little hope? Why couldn’t Luz just trust in Amity? Amity, who risked her parents ire for her. Who risked her library job for her. Luz trusted Amity with her life- why shouldn’t she trust her with her heart?

Luz scratched the rat gently and started walking again.

Maybe Amity kissed her on the cheek because she liked Luz.

Luz took a deep breath.

Because she had. Kissed her.

Amity had kissed her.

It might end up all crashing down and hurting worse in the end, but Luz allowed herself to hope that Amity liked her back anyway.
