World Hopping

Summary:

Jellie is not an official hermit. She's not even a player. As such, there is no way she should be able to make the hop between worlds for the new season. However, Jellie doesn't care what others think she should and shouldn't be able to do.

Work Text:

"You're sure there's no way I can bring her with me?"

"I'm sorry Scar, I've tried everything I can. Making her a player so she can make the jump with us, making her an item so you could put her in deep storage until we get there, I even tried fusing your code with hers so she'd be pulled along with us. There's nothing I can do."

Jellie looked between her human and the helmeted bee, trying to figure out what was going on. All of her human's friends had been excited about something, and then they had left. The bee had come around a few times to look at her for a bit, then sigh and leave. She wasn't sure what he was doing, but she did know that her human was upset.

She didn't like when her human was upset. Maybe lap time would help. Lap time was the best time.

She jumped into his lap, butting her head against his chin. He pressed his mouth against the top of her head, which she'd discovered was as close to proper affection as he could get. He gently scratched the fur on her neck and back. He had water running down his face, which she'd learned was bad.

"Alright, it looks like this is goodbye for now." What? "We've tried everything, and you can't come with me." What was going on? "Be good for the tourists. Don't bite anyone. I'll try to visit you as much as I can." Was that the reason he was upset?

"Goodbye, Jellie. I love you." He placed her on a table nearby and wheeled himself out of the room, wiping furiously at his face. The bee scratched her gently between the ears and then he too was gone. She looked around the room, seeing that he had left his hat lying on a chest nearby. She sniffed at it, then curled on top of it. This was his favorite hat.

It was her favorite, too.

Clearly, he hadn't wanted to leave. He'd been talking to her excitedly for a while, something about traveling to different worlds and new possibilities. She couldn't force him to stay here, alone, just because she couldn't leave. So instead, she'd find a way to travel with him. They'd never be separated again.

Besides, she had to give him back his hat.

After a few nights, she figured she was ready. The bee's visits had each left her with something new: a way to carry things with her, the ability to do things she'd seen her human and his friends do.

A line like a thread, pulling her towards her human.

She picked up his hat in her mouth. Couldn't forget that. Then she focused on her human, closing her eyes as the world around her, the only world she'd ever known, faded.

She opened her eyes upon hearing creatures scuttling in the night. She was still holding the hat, and could see the beginnings of a large structure in front of her. She believed her human had once called it a 'house.'

Speaking of her human, she could see him in a bed, lights glowing around him. He was asleep, and she could see the red one was with him. She liked the red one. She could only do so much to cheer her human up, and the red one helped when she couldn't. It had been clear that they liked each other, and she was glad they had figured it out.

She hopped onto the bed at their feet, waking the red one. He sat up, looking at her blearily as she walked up to him and butted her head against his chest. A careful hand moved towards her, checking the thing her human had placed around her neck. His eyes widened, and he grabbed her human by the arm and began shaking him.

"Scar. Scar wake up. Scar you have to see this oh my goodness." Finally, her human moved slightly and she stepped over to him, dropping the hat over his face before flopping over on him, purring.

"What the- Grian, what's going on?" He moved the hat and froze, eyes locked with hers. She sniffed at him before rubbing against his face as he looked at the thing around her neck.

"Jellie?" That was what he called her. "Is that really you?" She sniffed at his hand, purring louder when he scratched at her head. He made a strange noise before wrapping his arms around her, pulling her close to his chest. It was cramped, but she didn't mind.

"How did you get here? I thought I had to leave you!" The water was back. He didn't seem upset this time. Maybe the water just meant he was feeling too much and it was leaking. "Oh no, I don't have any Jellie snacks, I left them on the table for the tourists to give you!" Then it was a good thing she'd grabbed them, along with her bag of toys. Both had made it here, and with some effort she managed to snag the bag of treats in her mouth and pull it out of thin air.

They both stared at her for a moment. Her human slowly grabbed the bag out of her mouth and opened it, shaking a few into his hand and offering them to her. She crunched them happily before curling against her human's chest for a nap.

Cheering him up was hard work, but worth it.

Jellie dozed on the seat of the diamond throne. It was one of her favorite spots, surrounded by shiny objects and in the sunlight for most of the day.

She heard a noise in front of her, flicking her ear at it. She opened her eyes to find the red one and his friends breaking the blocks around her.

"Jellie? Can you step onto this for me?" She looked at the block he'd placed in front of her, sniffed it, then laid her head back down. Absolutely not.

Something soft and blue (and clean) was placed on it. Still no, but tempting.

A brown object was dropped onto it. Her human's hat. She sniffed once more, then climbed on top of it and curled up again. The red one scratched her behind the ears, then continued whatever he was doing as she dozed off.

"What?! How did this happen?" Jellie looked up, seeing her human looking at the formerly diamond throne. She mrrrrrped at him, then hopped into his lap. He giggled as she curled up, then covered her with the hat she'd left behind. He scratched the top of her head, then started rolling towards his office.

Lap time was the best time.
