Car Chase

Summary:

Yamato sighed, falling onto the sofa in the 00 headquarters’ lounge room. It was empty today with most of the other agents either out on assignment or taking a well-deserved break of their own. He threw his head back, leaning it on the back of the sofa trying to calm himself after the events of a little while ago.

“Yamato!” Gai sank onto the sofa next to him. “Is everything alright?”

Yamato turned his head towards Gai warily, not sure what to say. Gai was Genma’s husband after all. He finally mustered up the courage to tell him the truth.

“Genma and a car chase happened.”

Work Text:

Yamato sighed, falling onto the sofa in the 00 headquarters’ lounge room.  It was empty today with most of the other agents either out on assignment or taking a well-deserved break of their own.  He threw his head back, leaning it on the back of the sofa trying to calm himself after the events of a little while ago.

He respected Genma as a 00 Agent, especially since the man had been working as one for much longer than he himself was.  And with much more patience too.  But, after the events of the day, he wasn’t too sure about his level of admiration and respect for the other man.

At least when it came to handing Genma the keys to the cars that the Agents drove.

Why did he have to be paired with Genma of all people on this assignment?  If he’d known that Genma liked car chases, he would have pulled out of it in a heartbeat.

Gai and Kakashi appeared, walking down the hallway leading from the mission desk.  They were dressed in their mission gear, clearly expecting to have to go out on their own later.  It was Gai who noticed him first, brows furrowing, as he jogged over.  Kakashi cocked his head before shrugging his shoulders and walking behind him at a more leisurely pace.

“Genma?”  Gai asked, relaxing a little before he straightened again as Yamato’s words registered.  “What happened?”  He demanded.

Yamato moved his head to try to reassure the other man.  “It was nothing bad, Gai. It’s just Genma thought it was a good idea to participate in a car chase today.”

Kakashi had joined them by now and raised a brow.  “A car chase?”  He asked, hands in his pockets.  “Hmm, that must have been fun.”

Yamato shuddered, remembering the event.  He then glared at the masked man.  “Of course, you would think that.”  He muttered.

He did not fondly recall all of the times he and Kakashi participated in car chases when he and Kakashi had been partners.  It was nerve-wracking, and some of those chases had shaved years off his life.

Kakashi shrugged once more, eyes creasing in amusement.  Sighing, Yamato addressed Gai again., deciding to ignore the white-haired man.  “Genma thought it would be fun if we took the car around to chase down the Akatsuki.  Do you know how crowded the city center is on a Saturday afternoon?”  He pushed away from the sofa, starting to get agitated, and made a slow progress from one end of the meeting room to the other as he paced.

“We could have hit people!”  He yelled out, hands waving about as the stress he had felt during the situation finally found an outlet.  “And there were children!”  He emphasized this last point with a fist punched into his palm.  “I think a little kid lost his ice-cream due to Genma’s actions.  And let’s not even talk about the property damage.”

“Oh come on now, it wasn’t that bad.”

Yamato had his back turned to the hallways so he didn’t see the newest visitor.  He paled though when he recognized the voice, and turned around.  Genma stood by the door leading from the lounge room to the part of headquarters that housed the tech crew.  He grinned, tossing his hair back with a flick of his head, his bandana sticking out a pocket.  He wore a devilish grin on his face and had his usual senbon resting in his mouth.

“Genma!”  Yamato squeaked and rubbed a hand on the back of his neck awkwardly.  “Hello?”

Genma tilted his head at his latest mission partner as he made his way over to the sofa.  He collapsed next to Gai, practically on the man’s lap really, and kicked his legs to rest on the nearby ottoman.  With one arm thrown over the back of the sofa behind Gai and the other draped casually over the armrest, he was the picture of utter nonchalance.

Yamato envied him.

“Genma,”  Gai began turning to speak to his husband, “Yamato shared an interesting story.”  Gai waved a finger in front of his face. “You cannot do things like that!”

Genma snagged the finger, bringing it to his mouth to lay a kiss on it. Gai flushed and pulled his hand away quickly to rest by his side again.  Genma pouted, but then sighed and relaxed.

“It wasn’t that bad, I promise.”  He assured his husband, throwing his head back on the sofa, mimicking Yamato’s earlier position.  “It just so happened that we were tailing Itachi, and I couldn’t let him get away.  Not when he’s our mole.”

The entire room became silent as they all took a moment to think about Itachi themselves.  His actions had cost their good friend and comrade Hayate his life.  And had resulted in the death of so many Uchiha.  None of them ever felt comfortable knowing that he’d done it because the higher ups-- because Hirzuzen Sarutobi-- sanctioned it.

At least with Tsunade-hime in charge things wouldn’t be that bad.  Or so, they hoped.

Besides, even now, five years later, they were still trying to make up for all the intel that Itachi had leaked out.

Because he had already turned traitor by then, giving away secrets about the 00 Organization to the Akatsuki, helping the armed gang to always be one step ahead of them.

“Anyway,”  Genma cleared his throat, trying to dissipate the sad atmosphere,  “my driving wasn’t nearly as bad as Yamato here makes it seem.  See, we did go down a few pedestrian only streets, but I did avoid the humans around us.  And I made sure we only nicked a table or two.  Sides, we did get stuff done didn’t we Yamato?”

He picked his head up and raised a brow asking whether Yamato would contradict him.

Yamato dropped his hands to his side, sighing.  “Yeah I guess we did.”

Kakashi nudged him with his shoulder, eager to hear about the events of the afternoon.  “Oh?  Do share.”

Yamato side-eyed Kakashi, not really interested in answering.  Genma grinned from the sofa and decided to answer the question.

“The chase led us to an area of town we know the Akatsuki are haunting.  Seemed a bit too easy to find them, but we did manage to locate a few warehouses by the docks they seem interested in.  Now, we just have to hope Tsunade will consider letting us go after them soon before they bail.”

Yamato sighed, nudging Genma’s legs off the ottoman to take a seat on it with the other man being surprisingly accommodating today.  The entire chase and events that followed were bugging him.   It all seemed too easy.  But, perhaps he was overthinking things.

He stretched his legs out in front of him, nudging Kakashi’s toes with his.  “Whatever the case, Genma, perhaps next time, I should do the driving.” He stated, leaning back on his hands.

Genma took his senbon out of his mouth and twirled it lazily, one brow raising.  “You sure?  Got to admit that it was kind of fun doing the speed chase.  Besides no one got hurt did they?”

“That’s not the point Genma!”  Yamato complained, feeling his shoulders sink as he slumped, and giving this argument up as a lost cause.

“Point?”  Genma shrugged his shoulders, tossing a wink his way.  “Now, where’s the fun in that?”

So, please feel free to take a look at my Genma Week Stories from other days as well. I'm ridiculously proud of Day 2's story because I spent maybe three weeks perfecting it.

Thanks for reading!
