Work Header

in your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow

Summary:

Gaige is caught in a time loop, forced to repeat the hardest challenge she's had to face on Pandora so far over and over until she can somehow not die.
Seems easy enough.
(It isn't).

Chapter 1: Maybe I'll Come Alive

Summary:

Preparations.

Notes:

Title is from Chiquitita by ABBA cause why not. Chapter titles from Hard Times by Paramore bc I thought about the montage from Happy Death Day 2U a LOT while writing this. That probably tells you a lot about the mood of the story if you've seen the movie. Watch the Happy Death Day movies actually
Aaaaanyways, I wrote this whole monster of a fic over the course of like four days because the brainrot hit me hard and fast and i somehow haven't written a time loop fic yet even though it's one of my favourite tropes to ever (if that wasn't clear by my movie rec). So, fixed that! This fic is also inspired by the fact that during my Gaige playthrough this mission kicked my entire ass!!!!
Anyway ahaha enjoy !!

Chapter Text

The return to Sanctuary from Opportunity was harrowing.

First of all, Gaige had the voice of a douchebag. Not fun. Everything she says sounds sarcastic and her old movie references sound like they’re coming from a smarmy dudebro that will talk over you when discussing literally anything (or, just like they’re coming from the douchebag).

Second, said douchebag hurt Angel. Sure, Gaige was only just warming back up to the idea of being friends with the AI again (after all, her betrayal hurt them all deeply), but hearing Angel cry out followed by Jack’s scolding made Gaige’s blood run cold. After that, more than ever, she was determined to get to where the AI’s (undoubtedly massive) servers lie and get that vault key.

Third, Jack rained loaders down onto his city like he didn’t really care about his little jewel of paradise in the middle of an uninhabitable wasteland. Gaige ended up getting pushed back a few times, thanks in part to an asshole constructor in her way. Being revived by a New-U station did not seem inviting, so, Gaige pulled up her left arm and summoned DeathTrap.

The duo made quick work of the constructor and any other loaders after that, sprinting straight for the fast travel station once their path was clear.

Gaige remained silent as she stepped into the Crimson Raiders HQ. The four other people in the war room turned to her as she entered, expectant eyes on her. They quickly became worried the longer the mechromancer stayed quiet for. She pulled a solemn face, glancing between each of them, then after a moment, broke out into fits of laughter. Her laughs sounded less like ‘Heh, fooled ya!’ and more like ‘I just stole a kid’s candy and it’s cries are literally the funniest shit I’ve ever heard.’ Tension dropped and a couple of them groaned, both because of the girl’s antics and because of her new voice.

“Great job, soldier,” Roland says, sounding less like praise and more like a call to attention as Gaige’s laughter died down. “We’re all set to go to Angel’s Control Core. Go tell Claptrap to meet us there.”

Gaige raised an eyebrow. “We’re only going tomorrow, though, right?” the mechromancer jabs a finger in the direction of the balcony, referring to the darkening sky outside.

“That’s the point,” says Mordecai, deadpan, though there’s the slightest upturn of his lip as he says it. Right, hah. Everyone hates Claptrap. Gaige gives Roland a silly little salute and hopes out of the HQ via the balcony.

The rest of the day was fairly uneventful after telling Claptrap to head to Thousand Cuts. He triumphantly yelled out and rolled over to Pierce Station. He disappeared, and Gaige turns on her heel to go back to HQ. Blasting the shit out of a fascist asshole’s dream city make’s a bitch hungry.

After her meal, and (yet another) mission briefing from Roland, she tells everyone that she’s going to ‘Kick that douchenozzle’s ass to the next century’. She’s met with chuckles, agreement, and some amused eye rolls. Happy, she stalks off to bed, curling under the thin covers and passing out.

Little did Gaige know…
