“I know you want this as much as I do, but...” Luka peered down at his ex, Sabrina Raincomprix, noting with displeasure how she shied away from his gaze.
She was the daughter of the law and he was Luka Couffaine, infamous pirate on the most dangerous ship on the seven seas, the Liberty. “But me living as a law-abiding citizen just doesn’t make sense,” Luka said. “I’ve done too many awful things. I’ll hang.”
Sabrina peeked up at him from under her lashes, and Luka almost swore. He couldn’t resist any of her requests when she looked at him like that. She placed her warm, soft hands on his bare chest and started drawing circles with her index finger. “That’s why we’ll make you a new identity.”
“‘Brina, please.” Luka’s eyes fluttered closed. Her hands would be the death of him. He was helpless under her touches. “I can’t. You’re asking too much.”
Sabrina leaned forward and kissed him on the collarbone, her hot breath ghosting over his skin. Luka shuddered, opening his eyes only to see her half-lidded ones studying him. “You wouldn’t be the only one giving something up,” she said. “I’d abandon all my friends and family for you, too.”
“Which is why I don’t understand why you can’t just set sail with me.” Luka cupped her cheeks, determined to throw her off her game just as she was doing to him. He craned his neck down, tasting the lime juice on her breath. “Admit it. My life as a pirate appeals to you.”
“I admit to nothing,” Sabrina purred, raising up on her tiptoes to nip Luka’s ear. Heat curled in his belly and blasted his face; it wasn’t often she could make him blush, but the way she was treating him now… “Are you sure you don’t want to come live your life with me?”
She gently raked her nails down his chest, and Luka nearly groaned aloud. “Sabrina, I can’t. I really can’t.” He leaned forward and stole a kiss from her lips, but one kiss wasn’t enough. It never was. “Why can’t you live your life with me?”
Sabrina sighed against him, breathing in his breaths. Her tongue snuck out to lick his lower lip, and then she rested her cheek on his chest. “Why? So we can find treasure together?”
“No,” Luka whispered, carding his fingers through her hair. “I don’t think you understand.”
He placed one finger under her chin and raised her eyes to his. “You, my love, are my treasure.”
Sabrina’s eyes widened, but Luka was done talking. He silenced her with a searing kiss, spreading his hand across the small of her back and dipping her low.
They’d figure out their thorny problem, but not today.
