If he had been present, if he had been there by Ladybug’s side, then maybe his father would’ve still been alive today. Maybe the butterfly miraculous wouldn’t have been lost again to some new villain. Maybe Ladybug wouldn’t have gotten hurt, causing his father to sacrifice himself. Maybe he would’ve been the one to sacrifice himself. That was part of his job, wasn’t it?

She’d seen him when she had to tell him his father died. She’d seen how it had broken his heart and she couldn’t bear to see that in him again. So, maybe she was a terrible girlfriend for not being entirely truthful, but how could she be when it would only hurt him more?
The only way she could cope with any of this was: 1. Stay as busy as physically possible so as to not think about it and 2. Think of it as a Ladybug problem, not a Marinette problem. Marinette didn’t know that Adrien was a senti-being. Marinette didn’t know that Gabriel Agreste was Monarch. Marinette didn’t know about the wish. Only Ladybug did.

Summary
Now, laying on his bed with only the soft light of a bedside lamp illuminating the room, he felt guilt eating at him from inside his chest. His miraculous burned on his finger, a reminder of what he’d given up. Of what had somehow led to his father helping Ladybug and dying in the process. The guilt was suffocating, building more and more until he felt like all that was left of him was guilt.

She’d tried to forget the way her heart skipped a beat and the way she couldn’t stop staring at him. She’d tried to forget whatever little flip her heart did when he pulled her into a hug. Summary
Adrien has mastered the art of the smile. Even while his mind is on poor behavior, when he's caught beneath a barrage of unkind thoughts to himself, he's still able to keep his smile. Attend his friends' parties, maintain small talk, get through the day — and hopefully his friends won't realize how messed up he really is.
Everyone is out-pacing him. While he's barely getting out of bed in the morning, his friends are making waves, changing lives, getting engaged.
He can't even get his girlfriend to text him back.
So, sure. Maybe he's not in the best head space right now — but 'suicidal'? Ladybug's certainly just reading too deeply into things. But if her concern for Chat Noir's mental state is enough to get her reaching out, well, he won't turn down the opportunity to chat with a friend. Besides, Ladybug seems to be having a rough go of it, too. Maybe they can help each other out.

Another great depressed Adrien angsty fic courtesy of buggachat. Only 2 chapters in and OUGH 😭 like yeah of course Adrien internalizes everything and minimizes his feelings. And of course Marinette is so wrapped up in her responsibilities and what she views as the Big Crisis (Chat’s mental health) that she unintentionally neglects her relationship with Adrien, unknowingly making Chat Noir spiral even more 😭 And obviously Marinette isn’t at fault for Adrien’s spiral but she’s certainly not helping…

"NO!" she screams, voice half rawness, half terror. Ladybug snaps her arm forward, trying to fling her yoyo around him, but she's too late. The inky blackness wraps around his limbs, pulling him down, covering his eyes and mouth. He struggles against it, trying to pull away, to grasp some air and call upon his power, but he starts to fade. The last thing he sees is her face, eyes wide in fear, arms outstretched and reaching, teeth bare, screaming for him. And then, like he's drifting off into sleep, everything goes dark.

He wakes, but doesn't open his eyes, his heart is hammering. Was it just a dream? Adrien feels sunlight on his face, on his eyes, and he squints against it. He's laying down on something soft and warm. Then he notices a hand in his hair, brushing it back, occasionally scratching the nape of his neck. Adrien wills his heavy eyes to open a crack. Dark hair, blue eyes, Ladybug? He blinks and focuses on her, no, there's no red here. It's Marinette. She's sitting above him, looking forward, a small smile on her face.
