Work Text:
Chris came home a little dazed. He still hadn’t recovered from the fact that he’d done it. He had actually quit his job at the DPD. He shut the door behind him with his foot, walked to the dining table and dropped the box with his desk stuff on it. Christ then laughed in a high-pitched and stunned manner at himself for just a moment.
“Honey?” Simone called from upstairs. “Is that you?”
Chris shook himself and called back:”Yeah it’s me. I’m home.”
Simone came down the stairs. “Well, what are you doing home so early?” She said with a smile before spotting the box on the table. Her face dropped. “Is everything okay?” She asked, concerned.
Chris smiled widely as if trying to show every tooth. “Everything is great!” Chris said the last word with a huge sigh of contentment. “I did it, sweetie, I quit the DPD.”
Simone looked from the box to him and back a few times, trying to find the words. “Chris- what? But I-”
“I know, I know. I probably should have warned you first. But honestly I think we both knew this was happening at some point. Today I just decided I’d had enough.” Chris explained.
Simone deflated a little and gathered herself. “Did something finally push you over the edge?”
Chris shook his head. “No, not really. I just started thinking and then I found myself in Fowler’s office. It wasn”t anything specific. I just needed to get away from there.”
Simone nodded in understanding. “So how do you feel?”
“Like a weight’s been lifted.” Chris answered. He breathed in deeply, then out. “A little lost too since I’m not sure where to go next, but mostly I feel good.”
“That’s great, honey.” Simone said with a smile and a squeeze to Chris’ arms before she straightened herself and slapped his arm instead. “Chris Edwin Miller!” She yelled. “How dare you just uproot your entire life before even talking about this with me! We have bills and a son, for God’s sake. I cannot believe you just sprang this on me.”
When she fumed silently for a moment, Chris asked: “Are you done?”
Still breathing hard and frowning deeply she said: “I think so,” in the same stern manner.
“Okay. I’m sorry, Simone. I’ll get another job soon. I promise. In the meantime, I’ll take care of Damian. Don’t you worry, okay? It’s all gonna work out.” Chris soothed her.
Simone let go of the worst of her anger. “Okay. Good!” She said. “I’m still angry at you.”
“I don’t doubt you are, sweetie.” Chris said before pulling her in and kissing her lightly.
