Work Text:

“…so now you add x in both sides and… there! That solves the integral!”

There was a smile in Atem’s face. “See? I told you you could do it.”

Yugi groaned. “Yeah, it only took me like half an hour.” He leaned back until his back was supported by Atem’s chest, both of them on the latter’s bed. “Why do I even need to take advanced Calculus, anyway?”

Atem’s arms came around him automatically. “As far as I know, all people who study something related to IT have to take it.” He kissed the top of his head. “Besides, you’re doing Chemistry for fun.” He pretended to shudder. “You can’t possibly complain about Calculus.”

“Watch me.” Yugi tilted his head back as far as he could and puckered his lips in a demand for a kiss that was swiftly met.

“Well”, Atem murmured into his lips, “if anyone can do it, it’s you. You’re brilliant.”

“As flattering as your compliments are, they don’t make me better at math, sadly.” He sighed. His phone chimed, and he went to look at the notification when he noticed the time. And panicked. He was supposed to hand in some paperwork in an office all the way across campus. An office that closed in five minutes.

“Oh no!” he exclaimed as he jumped off the bed. “I’m going to be late!”

He was picking up his stuff when he noticed the envelope with his documents on Atem’s desk. He quickly shoved it into his backpack, kissed Atem, and was gone.

Atem was doing some homework when Jonouchi came in. They made small talk, and eventually the topic came around to Yugi.

“So”, Jonouchi asked, “did you get those tickets for him?”

“Yeah” Atem smiled. “I know he’ll love them.”

“Can I see?” Jonouchi asked eagerly, and Atem chuckled. He’d forgotten Jonouchi loved Duel Monsters tournaments, too.

“Of course. The envelope is... right…” He stopped, looking around.

Hadn’t he put it somewhere within easy reach? He had a vague memory of putting it down on his desk, and then planning to hide it so Yugi didn’t see, but not getting around to it…

“Atem?”

He looked up at his roommate with a panicked expression.

“Help.”

Yugi was out of breath when he reached the office, just in time. The lady at the desk eyed him critically, but didn’t object to him stepping forward and stating his request. When she asked for his papers, he opened his backpack…

And was very confused to find two envelopes.

Huh? He didn’t remember having another envelope… oh wait, he’d grabbed it at Atem’s room. Had he accidentally swiped Atem’s stuff instead, having his own documents in his backpack all along?

So it seemed.

The lady cleared her throat impatiently. He flashed her an apologetic smile, before peeking at the contents of one of the envelopes. Those looked to be… tickets? Huh. Was Atem going to some kind of event? Why hadn’t he heard about this? It was exactly the sort of thing Atem would tell him about…

Unless it was a surprise. For him.

Oh.

Oops.

Well, he couldn’t very well pretend that nothing had happened, did he? That envelope was on Atem’s desk; there was no way he hadn’t noticed its absence. But he hadn’t seen what the tickets were for, so… at least that part was still a surprise.

“Are you planning to hand the documents any time today?” a voice interrupted his thoughts.

“Right. Sorry.”

Atem and Jonouchi’s room was a mess, and the former’s countenance spoke of desperation, hair frazzled from running his fingers through it and expression frantic.

“Are you sure-” he began

“Atem” Jonouchi interrupted, “if you ask me to check under my bed one more time, I’m gonna throw you out the window, capisce?

Atem laughed, though it was clearly tinged with hysteria. “I know. Sorry.”

There was a knock at the door. The shorter boy was so out of it that he opened the door without even asking who it was. He almost groaned when he saw. Of course Yugi would be here right now.

“Hey”, he started, smiling… though that faded as he took in Atem’s state, as well as the room’s. “Uh… bad time?”

“Kinda”, Atem grimaced.

“Hey Yug’”, Jou greeted cheerfully.

“Hey. So uh, I’ll get out of your hair quickly then. I just wanted to return this.”

He reached inside his backpack and produced something. An envelope.

Oh.

Oh no.

Had Yugi seen? Why did he even have it?

“I grabbed it by accident when I rushed out of here”, he explained. “Didn’t even think it might be yours.”

“Oh.” He took it. How was he supposed to handle this? He had to know. “Did you… look inside?”

“Only a bit. I stopped as soon as I realised it wasn’t mine.” Yugi cleared his throat. “I, uh… might’ve noticed they looked like tickets.”

“Oh.” So much for surprising him.

“Yeah.”Yugi was fidgeting. “So… you have an event?”

Atem sighed. There was no fixing this; might as well. “Yes, well… they’re for you, actually. For us.”

Yugi’s face lit up, but there wasn’t a lot of surprise there. To his credit, he tried to act like it.

“Really? What for?”

Atem smiled. “Why don’t you find out for yourself?”

Yugi nodded and eagerly pulled out the tickets. And gasped loudly.

“The Duel Monsters championship?!”

“Yup.” He tried to sound nonchalant, but knew he came across as pretty smug. He knew those tickets were hard to get.

“How?!”

“Well-”

He was cut off by Yugi throwing an arm around his neck and kissing him. Hard. Distantly, he heard Jonouchi say something and leave, not that he was paying much attention. When they stopped for breath, Yugi was beaming.

“You’re the best.”

“I know”, he joked.

Yugi snickered, then smirked. “I was going to say thank you, but on second thought…. how about I just show you?”

He closed the door behind him. Atem matched his smirk.
