Fireflies

Summary:

Tumblr drabble prompt: "Look! Fireflies!"

Jon, Dany and their children try to spot fireflies.

Small drabble off the Tumblr prompt I received. This is set in the ‘Help me hold onto you’ universe, a bit in the future. (Can be read independently though)

Notes:

Small, fluffy drabble. (Unedited)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The garden Dany had planted in her mother’s honour, Rhaella’s Garden, was fast becoming one of her most favourite spots on the island. She had lovingly planted a grove of lemon trees (and could already see several small, green orbs sprouting), punctuated by lavender and wildflower, leaving the air sweet and fragrant.

She was lying on the grass, in her husband’s arms, his fingers skimming over her back. The sun had already set, leaving behind a clear, dark sky sparked with stars. Crickets chirped, birds sang as they found their nests. Quiet. Perfect. Peaceful.

Next to her, Lyanna huffed, curled around a book.

“Lya, sweetling, stop reading in the dark, you’ll hurt your eyes.” Dany chided gently.

Her daughter was almost six now, and with it came a wave of impatience and stubbornness, and a lot of tantrums. Still, she reluctantly listened, slammed her book shut, laid it on her tummy and gazed up, pouting. “This is stupid. I am hungry.”

Dany felt Jon chuckle in her ear, his arm drawing her closer, pressing a kiss to her temple before he propped his head on his hand to give their princess a gentle smile, “Just a few more minutes, pup, then we’ll head for supper.”

Lyanna grinned back, appeased for now; their little daughter could never stay angry with her father. Her son, however, was another matter.

Aemon moved his head from Jon’s stomach and lied down between them, his knees up and little bare feet planted against the soft ground. Using his shoulders, he squirmed between them, wiggling like a little worm and pushed his head between his parents’.

Jon and Dany parted, his arms loosening their hold to make space for their four-year-old. Her son remained oblivious, his lavender eyes wide and lips parted in surprise.

“Look! Fireflies!” he squealed. Like with Lyanna, he struggled with pronouncing the r’s and so fireflies came out like ‘fieflies'.

Dany found it absolutely adorable. Her daughter had grown out of it, speech clearer every day. She would savour this with Aemon for as long as she could.
Dany tore her eyes from her son and looked to where he was pointing. Fireflies flickered and lit above them, shining like little specs of ember.

“They look like small dragons!” Aemon gushed, awed.

Jon raised a brow, “Really?”

“Aye, look, papa, they breathe fire from their bums!” he declared like he had made the greatest discovery in the world.

Dany snorted as her husband sputtered, looking lost for a response. Lya giggled hysterically, draping herself over Dany to tickle her brother. Before long, they were a mess of tangled limbs, small hands and legs poking Dany’s sides as they fought.

Across her, Jon shook his head at their children’s antics. Until he joined in, golden fireflies were all but forgotten...
