Derek eyed Stiles with trepidation as he drove the Jeep closer to the marina a few thousand miles from Beacon Hills. Stiles hadn’t given any indication where they were headed, just told Derek to pack for a week in the sun and surf. Derek had done as requested while trying to weasel some more information out of Stiles, but his husband was uncharacteristically tight-lipped.
Stiles’ ideas of surprises were usually a little bit less than ideal, but the planning always made him so happy that Derek didn’t have the heart to tell him to stop planning them. He glanced into the back of the Jeep at the bags they’d packed and then towards the roof where Stiles had strapped two jetboards. It had been something Derek had expressed an interest in after seeing them advertised on a celebrity’s Instagram. He had to give Stiles credit for remembering that, but he was a little concerned about Stiles’ safety on the machine.
Stiles pulled to a stop in a parking spot at the end of a long pier. Several large boats lined the wooden structure, and Derek wondered which one they were heading toward. There were some yachts and smaller sport boats. Near the end were a couple of houseboats that were fancier than any he’d ever seen in his life. Getting out of the Jeep, he helped Stiles take down the jetboards and hoisted them both while Stiles took care of the bags.
He followed Stiles down the pier towards the end. He eyed the houseboats uneasily but followed him up the gangplank of the largest one on the end. “You rented a houseboat?” Derek asked, looking around the deck while he secured the jetboards to a holder on one side.
Stiles disappeared through the door with their bags. He reappeared a couple of minutes later, the bags replaced by a couple of beers. “You rented a houseboat?” Derek asked, taking the beer.
“No,” Stiles said, looking sheepish. “I bought a houseboat, but I rented a captain.”
Isaac wandered out the door, grinning at Derek. A sea captain’s hat sat at a jaunty angle on his curls. “I promise to be as unobtrusive as possible and I brought earplugs.” He winked at Derek, laughing and darting away when he tried to grab the hat off Isaac’s head. “Just enjoy your anniversary. I’ll teach you to drive this thing later so you and Stiles can take it out alone in the future.”
Derek could picture floating out on the water but was surprised Stiles would like the idea. They’d both gotten better about their feelings with water since the pool incident, but it still wasn’t their favorite place. This purchase and this trip might be Stiles’ way of getting past all of the bad memories. It was probably a good thing he’d invited Isaac and not Jackson to operate the boat.
Derek rocked as the boat’s engine came to life. He sipped at his beer and held out an arm, pulling Stiles up against him and pressing a kiss to the top of his head.
“Happy ten years, Sourwolf,” he said, smiling up at Derek as they clinked the necks of their bottles together.
“The first of ten million, I hope,” Derek said, smirking before pressing a gentle kiss to Stiles’ lips.
“Infinity and beyond,” Stiles offered, and Derek shook his head, wondering if Stiles had brought his laptop. He was suddenly in the mood to watch Toy Story before they headed out on the water.
