Notes:

This is my first fanfic ever. Also, most of my knowledge on the original source material comes from other BNHA fanfics and the first 2 seasons of the anime. So forgive me if I mess things up. Finally, I'm writing this fanfic kinda like a hobby, so I'm basically indulging myself when I write the relationships. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Chapter 1: Manifestation

Chapter Text

Midoriya Izuku loved quirks. He especially loved theorizing what different quirks were capable of. He was getting to the age where his quirk should manifest soon, and he couldn’t wait ‘till he got his.

“I wonder what my quirk’s gonna be. I hope it’s something cool like yours, Kacchan.”

Bakugo Katsumi had recently manifested her own quirk, and now she had the ability to generate explosions from seemingly nowhere. She and Izuku have been good friends since both their mothers were also good friends. They spent a lot of time together, with Katsumi’s favorite game being heroes.

“It’ll probably be something like Aunty Inko’s telekinesis. Still cool, but not as cool as mine!”

The two children laughed together and continued hanging out; talking the type of heroes they’ll be when they grow up, coming up with different names they could use as their hero name, and gushing over how cool All Might was.

***

After a day of playing, the two made their way back home going through their usual route. Crossing a bridge that towered over a simple river, Katsumi had thought to look over the bridge. It was early spring, so the fishes should be exiting hibernation. Katsumi wanted to go fishing with Izuku sometime later, so she signaled her best friend to come over to the edge and check if he could see any fish.

“Kacchan, be careful! What if accidentally fall over? It could be dangerous.”

One to not usually think about such things, she ignored the greenette’s warning and continued.

“Don’t be such a baby Izu-kun. A fall from this height wouldn’t hurt me anyway, I’m a lot tougher than I look. Come on, do you see any fi-”

Having suddenly wished she heeded Izuku’s warning, Katsumi found herself heading towards the river. She could hear her best friend call her name. She couldn’t find anything to keep her from falling, so Katsumi braced herself for the eventual impact. Closing her eyes, she grit her teeth.

Nothing.

She had waited for the pain from the impact to come, but she felt nothing. Opening her eyes, she realized she was floating mid-air, as if suspended by an invisible rope. She was lifted higher and higher in the air until she found herself back on the bridge. Once there, she suddenly felt the pull of gravity once more as she fell onto her bottom.

“What the heck? Did I just fly? Izu-kun, did you see what ju- IZU-KUN?!?”

When Katsumi fixed herself up and turned to question her best friend, she saw the green haired boy on the ground with a red liquid running down his face, as if he had been crying blood. Splotches of grey had developed all over the boy’s skin. But what shocked her the most were his eyes. His sclera had darkened to a deep black, surrounding his emerald green eyes in a sea of darkness. Something was happening to her best friend, and she immediately leapt into action.

“Izu-kun, are you okay? Are you hurt?”

The boy grunted; his entire body was sore. It felt like he had done a day’s worth of physical exercise and his head was throbbing. But he didn’t want to worry his best friend and needed to make sure she was alright.

“I’m f-fine, Kacchan. What about you? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I don’t know how, but I was stopped before I hit the ground. Your eyes are bleeding Izu-kun, are you sure you’re okay?”

Relieved that his friend was fine, Izuku tried to get up with the girl’s help. He wiped the blood off his face with his shirt and answered Katsumi’s question.

“My body feels sore and my head hurts.”

Izuku began to realize something. The cogs in his head were beginning to turn until he finally came to an exciting conclusion.

He put on his biggest smile, temporarily forgetting about the pain and soreness he was currently feeling.

“Kacchan! I think I just got my quirk!”

Katsumi was a bit taken back by the greenette’s sudden declaration, but soon beamed a smile of her own.

“That’s great, Izu-kun! But we should probably head home before it gets any later. C’mon, let’s get you home to Aunty Inko. She’ll know what to do. Can you walk?”

“Mhm.” Izuku nodded.

The two held hands as they walked back the rest of the way home to Izuku’s apartment, giddy at the thought of Izuku finally getting his quirk.

Upon seeing her son after his playdate with Katsumi, she almost had a heart attack.

“I-I-I-I-Izuku! What on Earth happened?”

The boy entered the apartment with splotches of grey covering his body and blood covering his shirt. More alarming was the change to the boy’s eyes.

“I’m fine Mom, I’m not hurt. I swear. But I think I just got my quirk!”

Feeling a bit relieved that her son was fine, Inko began to relax. There were now things to discuss, but there was one other thing she needed to do before they could have their talk.

“That’s great news honey. Why don’t you go get yourself cleaned up, then we can talk about it during dinner? Would you like to join us Katsumi-chan?”

“Sorry Aunty Inko, but Mom wanted me home for dinner today. Maybe another time.”

“That’s alright dear, be careful on your way home.”

Katsumi waved goodbye to her best friend and his mother and began her journey home, beginning to think about the events that had transpired today.

***

“Now, why don’t you tell me what happened today.”

Over dinner, Izuku began to retell the story of that day’s events. Inko was a bit worried when she heard what had almost happened to Katsumi (she would have to apologize to Mitsuki later) but was glad to hear that everything turned out okay. From what she could gather, Izuku had awakened telekinesis. This made sense, considering her own quirk was a form of telekinesis as well. What really stuck out to her was magnitude of Izuku’s quirk.

She herself could lift small objects with a weight limit of around 10 to 15 pounds. The fact that he was able to completely stop the fall of another child his size and pull them out of harms way spoke volumes of the boy’s potential.

With the telekinesis more or less settled, she moved address the elephant in the room. Izuku was turning grey.

She had observed the grey splotches begin to spread over dinner, beginning to encompass more and more surface area of his skin. Soon, it looked more like there were splotches of Izuku’s original skin tone rather than the other way around.

“Izuku, how does your skin feel? Do you feel any pain or discomfort?”

“No. My body felt tired before, like I just finished playing heroes with Kacchan, but after sitting down, I feel fine.”

‘So his skin color might be a result of his quirk. We’ll have to go get him checked at a hospital tomorrow.’

“Okay sweetie, why don’t you sleep with Mommy tonight? That way, I’ll be able to make sure nothing happens while you sleep.”

“Okay!”

The mother and son cleaned the dishes then prepared for bed. Inko would stay up a little later to make sure nothing else happened, and wouldn’t fall asleep until she was sure nothing happened.

***

A strange scent had overtaken her sense of smell, pulling Inko out of her slumber.

‘What’s that smell? Is it…’ She sniffed her surroundings, trying to identify the source. ‘Is it Izuku?’

Afraid that whatever gas Izuku was secreting could be dangerous, she quickly woke her son up.

“Izuku, wake up. I think you’re using your quirk in your sleep.”

Wiping his eyes, Izuku shot up. He then noticed a strange smell that enveloped the entire room. Was he doing this? He wasn’t sure why, but the smell made him believe it was his doing.

“Sorry Mom. I don’t know why, but I think I did this.”

“That’s okay sweety, do you know if you could stop it?”

Izuku tried…something… He did whatever he could think of to stop his body from making the gas. He felt as if he suddenly had control over a strange body part that encompassed his entire body. And after trying to wrangle control over this new…body part? He got his body to stop producing the gas.

“I think I did it Mom. It’s like I suddenly have another arm? But it covers my entire body…”

While Izuku was trying to stop the gas release, Inko went to open up the windows and the entrance to her room.

‘Hopefully, this stuff’s not dangerous.’

“Sorry Izuku, I think we’re gonna have to go to the hospital right now. Why don’t you go get changed, and we can head over when you’re ready?”

Still a little groggy from just waking up, Izuku slowly made his way to his room to get changed.

When they were ready to go, the mother and son took a taxi to the nearest hospital.

***

“So your son recently manifested his quirk and suddenly started to secrete an unknown gas in his sleep. I think we should get a sample of the gas to see if we can identify it. Can your son release some gas into this flask?”

“What do you think Izuku, can you do it?”

Izuku stood up and took the flask. He put his finger into the flask, and used his new… body part… to release gas into the container. When he was satisfied, he closed the flask and handed it to the doctor.

“I think that should be filled.”

“Thanks young man, now while we have this analyzed at the lab, I think we should run some tests on you and your mother just to make sure you’re both healthy.”

After running some tests, the doctor determine that there was nothing wrong with Inko or Izuku.

“So while we wait for the results of the test to come back, why don’t you tell me what your son’s quirk is.”

“We found out today that Iuku’s quirk is some kind of telekinesis. From what he’s told me, he was able to lift a child his size several meters off the ground. When his quirk manifested, the sclera of his eyes turned black and his skin began to change to this ashen grey color. It was gradual at first but looks like it completely changed his original skin color while he was asleep. Maybe the gas quirk manifested once his skin’s transformation was complete?”

“I see. And what are you and your husband’s quirks?”

“My quirk allows me to pull small objects towards me while my husband could breathe fire.”

“I see…Mrs. Midoriya, I believe your son has a dual quirk. Although rare, it can happen in some cases where a child inherits some aspect of both their mother and father’s quirks. Obviously, your son has your telekinesis quirk, the question now is the gas. Do you know how your husband’s fire breathing quirk works?”

Inko about it. She vaguely remembered what her husband explained to her about her quirk, so she told the doctor what she remembered.

“If I recall, my husband had a special organ in his body that contained some kind of flammable substance. He could eject this substance out of his mouth which would result in his flames.”

The doctor cupped his chin with his hand while he considered the new information provided to him. After a moment, he voiced his opinion.

“I believe I may have an idea about what your son’s quirk is, but I’ll have to order another test to be done in the lab. It’s a fairly simple test that shouldn’t even take a minute. Once we get the results, I’ll let you know my diagnosis. Thank you for your help, Mrs. Midoriya.”

And just like that, the doctor stood up and exited the room. It wasn’t until another 10 minutes had passed that the doctor returned.

“The results of the test revealed that the gas your son secretes is unknown. Referencing the results to various databases, we couldn’t find any matches to what your son creates. I can only theorize that it’s a chemical that is unique to your son’s quirk. As for the additional test I ordered, it revealed that it is an extremely flammable substance.”

Inko’s heart sunk at the implications of his statement. She was glad she didn’t accidentally ignite the gas while still at their apartment.

“The flame that burned from the gas resulted in a white flame with a temperature of nearly 6,000 K. That temperature hotter than the surface of the Sun. With that being said, we’ll need to discuss ways to prevent accidents from occurring while your son is asleep.”

Inko’s mind stopped working. A gas that when ignited burned hotter than the Sun. She could only hope that nothing bad would result from Izuku’s quirk in the near future.

Izuku didn’t understand much about what the doctor had said, but apparently, the gas he made was pretty dangerous. Feelings of dread began to eat away at the boy, but he decided not to think about it for now.

“Considering the urgency of getting your son’s quirk under control is, I’d made arrangements with someone with a similar quirk to help your boy gain better control. In the meantime, we’ll arrange for you and your son to stay here for now. That way, we can keep contain any gas leaks.”

Just like the doctor had said, Izuku was taken to a room which could contain a gas leak, should Izuku release it in his sleep. Thankfully, this measure only needed to be taken when he slept, as it appeared that the boy could control his quirk when he was awake.

Izuku was beginning to regret manifesting his quirk. He felt like a villain who was locked up in a prison. It made sense to him. Why wouldn’t they lock up someone with such a destructive quirk. Maybe he…

Izuku’s destructive train of thought was interrupted as sleep took him.
